MM to Ducati?

something really interesting IMHO are the words that MM lately has for the Ducatis (the bikes, not the riders) in the Italian interviews. Both after Brno and after Austria, but also in some interviews separated from the races, he has underlined how fast and stable the Ducatis seem in the entrance of the turns as well as the fact that they can bring more speed out of the corners (aka they have more acceleration). He also stated many times that he still considers Dovi his main rival for race wins even tho he's way behind him in the championship standings.

Add to the equation 3 more things that will sure be in Marc's head at some point: he is unhappy with Honda hiring Jorge, Ducati could potentially pay him even more than they are paying Jorge, if he really thinks Dovi is his most dangerous rival what would be better than getting on his same bike to beat him?

In one sentence: yes, I nowadays am more convinced that he may go to Ducati when his current HRC contract will be up.

Two cents worth is all any of us have on these speculative topics, but we are always very keen to hear anything from non-English sources, particularly direct rider quotes, from those with your talent for languages.

Hard to know what is really going on, whether there is any plan from Honda or whether Jorge just made himself available at a reasonable asking price with Dani definitely gone at the end of the year. I imagine they are not happy with their bike not being in demand from satellite teams and open talk it is all down to MM and that no one else can ride their bike. They may speculate themselves as we do that MM might like to move eventually and is not a career Honda man, and perhaps he has made no indication that he will never leave.

I think Jorge would have to show something extraordinary for Honda to not do everything possible to keep MM, and a young talent both arriving and developing to MM level seems highly unlikely for years, or possibly ever in the view of some.

From MM’s point of view I would imagine he would see a good rider on a bike which could possibly be superior to the HRC bike in a given year eg a Gigi Ducati financed by VW Audi money as his main threat hence the talk of Dovi.

I could be wrong but for some reason I thought Pedrosa and Marc ran slightly different versions of the bike from one another. I’m not sure if those differences run deeper than side fairings and fuel tanks but maybe Honda see value in Lorenzo helping to guide the development direction of future iterations of the RCV, making them less Marcentric?

I am honestly unaware of which are the different lines of development that Marquez and Pedrosa have on the RCV.

As for Jorge, HRC has stated that due to the significant differences in the two rider's styles they will be following two completely different ways of development with the bikes, each rider having his own.

JLO and MM will also have different technicians working on some aspects of their development. Honda is probably the only factory that has the knowledge, the people and the money to do so, and to do it well.

To be honest, I also really enjoy speculating :D It's just fun and it's part of these kind of talks.

I reckon there is a lot to be read between the lines when Marc talks. His Italian is perfect so I barely feel any language barrier when I hear his interviews, while he sure sounds and behaves differently in english (at least to me).

I do think Honda didn't plan to take Jorge but couldn't miss the chance as soon as it presented itself.

I'd like to underline that I'm not saying that I think MM will go to Ducati, but only that I am slightly more convinced that it could happen in a few years.

Last but not least is good to also say that the current situation is rather particular: only 2 bikes can aim to a victory right now (Honda and Ducati) many "younger" ones are struggling a lot (KTM and Aprilia) one is in purgatory and it's hard to understand its real potential (Suzuki) and a former top bike seems very lost (Yamaha). All these things could be different within a couple years...

It seems contradictory that he would be worried about Lorenzo joining Honda yet consider Dovi a bigger threat than Jorge.

I personally don't think he is worried by any other rider.

He has an acute sense of history and has emulated the Corkscrew incident, the Jerez 2005 last corner pass, and perhaps Motegi 2010, so I can't see him not going for the titles for multiple marques thing at some stage, although he might not assay this till he has 7/9 titles or whatever. Unless KTM advance more rapidly than seems likely, Ducati are the option, and may even be prepared to pay him as has been said. Hell freezes over before he goes to Yamaha, or he and Valentino become friends, I would anticipate.

I am fully convinced of this and I think I also wrote it at the beginning of this thread. Nothing and no one scares him, but he may just go from being the only golden boy at honda (sorry Pedro) to having to share his spot with someone and my 2 cents are that he may not like that and start feeling a need of a change.

Is MM a better rider than Dovi? How bout Lorenzo? Bout equal if not better than Lorenzo? Then you have to think that Marc would win on the Duc. I think in the back of his mind he is plotting this move. How funny is it that Lorenzo is now on a Honda for the next two years as teammates to Marc? So Honda still gets to have a top rider and they can breathe while Marc flys the coup to go to Ducati to try and cement his legacy by winning titles on two different makers. Gonna be crazy if he does go for sure. Where will Dovi be in two years?

I know that anything can happen in racing but Marc is clearly the most likely to win this years championship and with his HRC contract running through to the end of 2020, it’s realistic to assume he could remain the dominant player for the next two seasons. If all the planets lined up and no other manufacturers build a world beater he could well equal Rossi’s 9 world championships by 2020 when his HRC contract expires.

If Ducati (or another manufacturer) have a strong bike and he did switch, along with obscene amounts of money and a potentially superior bike, he could also surpass Rossi’s world title record count but also claim the ‘winning world titles across different manufacturers’. I’m sure he would also be pushing to not only win a title with another manufacturer but to also do it in his first year with them.

All of this is just fun speculation based on nothing really but if it played out for him like that it would be a real fairy tale climax to achieving the GOAT status. With Marc doing things like emulating Rossi’s famous corkscrew pass against Rossi of all people it tells me he is a real showman as well as a freak talent.

Here's a (utterly improvable and somewhat silly) hypothetical question: Does anyone think MM would be leading the championship if he swapped seats with Rossi?

Interesting.

I would say yeah, but not strongly. I would imagine the standings much closer with MM still in front.

From Reddit:

https://es.motorsport.com/motogp/news/marquez-jarvis-dijo-2016-vetados-yamaha/3167382/

My translation of key paragraphs:

"Lin Jarvis has said that a Marquez is not going to be seen at Yamaha, which he told me personally in 2016. I respect it and accept it," answered the Spaniard, who named the Brit Jarvis and not the brand based in Iwata, where, far away, surely they know nothing of palace intrigues.

They also reminded Marc about the visit to Rossi's ranch in 2015, when everything was wine and roses, and they asked him if he would be seen around Tuvillia again.

"Never say never, but I don't really see myself returning. It was a beautiful day that I spent there, I learned many things, a beautiful place. I had a lot of fun, I remember everything about that day. Would I return if he invited me back? Stop worrying, he's not going to invite me", said Marc in reference to Rossi

"Honda keep me informed at all times about their conversations with riders. When they started talking with Lorenzo, they asked me if that would be a problem. I quickly told them that there wasn't."

"I prefer that the strongest rider, the one who can win the championship, has the same bike as I have. I know they talked with Zarco and Dovizioso. I only asked them to sign a strong rider. What's happening now in Ducati is the example: The bike rides well because the two riders are strong. The rivalry raises the bar."

Concerning Lorenzo's ability to fight for the championship right away in his first year with Honda, Marc was as sincere as he was honest:

"I hope not! He's proven to be a fast rider. The ducati hurt him a lot at first. We'll see if with the honda hurts him in some race or throughout his first year. But in the end he'll surely be fast. Although I hope it hurts him a little..."

At Honda he has mainly tamed an unruly bike, a bike no-one else could ride in some years. I am fairly confident he could ride around the problems of the current Yamaha better than the current riders. Whether the bike is intrinsically fast enough even for him who knows, but the way he could come through the field in moto 2 with all bikes with what should be the same engine suggests it is not a good idea to put limitations on him.

Remember 2016 when Honda was in the same position as Yamaha and Marquez still managed to win the championship? I think that's your answer.

That's a good way to think about it, but when I think about it, 2016 would've been quite close had Rossi's engine not grenaded at Mugello...

I think HRC sorted the bike quite well my mid-2016 (e.g. Cal smoking the field at PI).

Thats doubtful, Marquez threw it down the road twice in 2016 after he had won the title and reverted back to his win or bin style. Still finished the championship with 2 races in hand which isn't really all that close. PI being a great example of that's because despite being like 5 seconds ahead at the time he wanted to keep extending the gap rather than managing it.

Mugello is a great example of how bad Honda's acceleration was that year after he got outdragged by Lorenzo to the line.

I actually do think he would because of the terrible starts to the season that Lorenzo and Dovi had and I also beleive Rossi would struggle on the Honda. It wouldn’t be anywhere near the lead he has now and would most likely lose out to the Ducati’s from here out like Rossi will.

Further proof...the Pope has blessed the union, inviting Marc to Ducati himself.
