I actually consider it a great movie, but I am sure it is incomprehensible if you haven't read the book. I first saw it with a group of fellow medical students at the university cinema, where they showed films once a week which tended to the avant garde. I had read the book and could follow and enjoy the film without being on acid, while my friends who hadn't read the book and hadn't taken acid either had no idea what the movie was supposed to be about. I don't know if the director, Stanley Kubrick, took acid but he was certainly a great film-maker in general.

Amazing filmmaking as most of Kubricks works were. Convoluted indiscernible plot.

Synn gets a pass on here to say anything he likes...you should know this by now, especially if it fits the agendas of the hypocritical among us...

I understand your position as well, and felt the same at one time, and I strongly suspect as you say he wouldn't address you in the fashion he does in person, and possibly not me either, while not as physically formidable as you no doubt are I haven't found that people rush to pick fights with me on the street either.

Synn can't really personally insult you or me though because we have never met, and we all three are anonymous posters on the internet, and while I agree talk is cheap and it is easy to be a keyboard warrior, insults from the likes of Synn are not really personal when it comes down to it.

The background conflict, in regard to which Synn I would agree deserves blame for re-stoking, stems from the people involved having spent a race week-end together and is truly personal involving information not gained from posting on this forum.

Nothing I hear from Synn would be something you wouldn’t overhear in an Indian restaurant or household
How is that racist?

A good point.

You equate the fans of a racer to a fundamentalist Afghani regime that kill girls for attending school and put the onus of proving a .... on the victim.

If you were a hippo, your name would be Krissy.

Always good to see you diversify, in this case from ad hominem to straw man.

I take your point though, I don't myself equate Rossi fans with the Taliban, and I am sure those who devised the shorthand term for such fans didn't intend any implication other than that some of his fans are fairly fanatical, but if you regard yourself as such a fan and resent the term I will stop using it, admitting it was lazy for me to ever use it anyway.

I presume you meant to reply to another of my recent posts.

I specifically said it wasn't racist applied to Keshav by Synn. What Indians say to each other, or what you think they say, is their own affair but I actually thought Barry's point was valid.

As I said, certainly so if you hadn't read the Arthur C Clarke book, which I had done years before ever seeing the film.

The original Blade Runner, which I consider one of the greatest films ever made and of much greater artistic merit than the book on which it was based was somewhat similar, so much so that they felt the need for the narration with the original release; again I had read the book before ever seeing the film.

Barry makes a decent point that it could drive away Indian members of the forum but that is simply false. The problem here is we are a bunch of white dudes debating whether or not a comment made about a white man was racist toward indians or not. A completely made up term that he came up with the tell keshav to .... off. Is he trying to get under Keshavs skin? Absolutely. Does that make his comment racist? .... no. We have a plenty of terms for white people who enjoy other cultures. He came up with a term like ...... or yellow fever. Are the terms endearing? No, but he wasn't trying to be. Thats a common problem around the world for someone to make a comment and for someone not of the offended race to stand up and say "hey that is racist," on behalf of another group. That just starts fires. If an Indian person was to some out and say "I am offending by the term used by synn toward a white man who loves my culture," then I may question it. I'd ask why that is offensive but I'd listen. However that ship as sailed because you guys already vandalized the term and tried to tag it racist. But think about it, I'd have no problem asking a Indian man if he thought this was a racist term if used toward a white man. I bet you'd get an overwhelming answer of "hahaha." However the use of Mexican monkey is and was racist and a Mexican was offended. Major difference.

I'd say you mention him more than anyone by far. Sometimes kindly mostly very poorly, whatever suit your needs in the moment. People defend him because he has made relationships with many members on this forum so did his better half. So it not that we are raising him up on a pedestal we are defending a friend who left and isn't here to defend himself.

So mexican monkey .... is the same as snafu? Which means situation normal all ...... up. While mexican monkey means the worst of 2 races. Do you not see the relation? Is n***er rig an acceptable term as well?

Yes! It's a nonsense expression I picked up from a pal of mine in the Bronx who does repair work for my shop. He uses it to describe really poorly done homemade repairs that customers try, that end up making the problem much worse. My pal Bob, like myself, is an old-school lefty liberal and as non-racist a person as you'll ever meet.

I've said it before; there was no intent to offend anyone, and if anyone was, it was wholly unintentional. You've been on this forum a long time and seen the long knock-down, dragged out political discussions that have taken place way in the past (in which BTW Jumkie and I were historically always on the same page) so you would know what I stand for, and racism blatant or subtle is not something I've ever been a party to.

For the record, when I used that expression, Jumkie never gave a ...., because he knows me well enough that I would never purposely race-bait him, regardless of how heated out debates were. It was only long after JKD dredged up that obscure link and lit a flame under Jum's ... that he decided to fire up this whole ....... tempest in a teapot - which in the end, is all this is.

I think, that's a much as I want to discuss this. Frankly if it were just to talk about it with Jum or Johnny - I wouldn't bother because they're both so invested in being angry. You on the other hand have struck me as being much more fair-minded and neutral. People tend as a rule to stick to their beliefs, so it might be a big waste of time trying to make you see that this is what I say it is. But I had to try. Because, and I've said it before, I misjudged you early one, but have come to enjoy your contributions on the forum . . . well except the stuff about Stoner. In the event, you do what you gotta do.

Dubs,

A very good example of which you speak is that recent prom dress ........ from the US where the girl dressed in a chinese style of dress and was 'attacked' on social media by many SJW's as 'appropriating chinese culture' or something similar.

Yet all reports I have seen from people of a chinese background indicate that they were not offended and that they supported the girl.

IMO only here but the term racist is thrown around way to often and subsequently applied far to much, such that in many ways it does lose the true 'disgust' that it should bring when used.

But then, I am an old, fat, four-eyed (not balding) middle aged white guy who grew up in a multi-cultural time, with many friends of variable background and I now live in a town with a large indigenous population.

So you are saying you would walk into a black bar with a white mate and start vociferously calling him black racist slurs?

Good luck with that then!

Also remembering that the black customers would be totally innocent to whatever the beef was .... but would understand that you feel its fine to use such slurs which suggests that they are indeed .... examples of that slur or even slur-worthy?

Nup .... thats pretty .....

Is there a mix of yellow with that Caramello? :D

I tried to go with all yellow, but someone on the internet said that was racist.
So blue it is for now, until someone else gets offended on behalf of the smurfs and Dr. Manhattan.

So you have Minions on the outer and possibly smurfs ............. why don't you pick on someone your own size :p

I was so young when it came out, so memory may fail, but I always understood that the screenplay was based on a short story, and that Clarke wrote an expanded treatment of it, sold as a "novel" later on, to capitalize on the popularity of the film. I thought it was convoluted nonsense. Normally - because I tend to think in a boringly linear fashion, I don't care for films or literature that are weighted style over content, but Kubrick blows all those prejudices away. Who cares about the story?

.... was to my mind not a great prose stylist. But absolutely the greatest story teller because he really got inside the reader's head. Although he's listed as a sci fi writer, I consider him to be a kind of genre of his own, the way The Brothers Grimm were or Dickens or Twain.

Only because I saw it quoted in someone else's post: JKD said the slurs used by Synn were something you'd hear any day in an Indian household. That has to be one of most ridiculous things he's ever said. I lived and worked in India for 10 years and can tell you JKD has never in his life been in an Indian household and heard such things. Absolutely preposterous.

Sure, I saw the film in the 70s and had probably read the novelisation, although I have read the short story (? The Sentinel) and most of Clarke’s stuffs (EDIT stuff), although I am not such a fan of his character in general.

Phillip K .... was great as far as the literature of ideas goes when SF was still fringe, but I think the film is just great, the best performances by most of the actors concerned, Rutger Hauer’s apparently extemporised dying soliloquy (just for you Synn) a believably realised future LA, special effects in the texture of the film rather than at the forefront etc. I really rate Ridley Scott, “The Duellists” another film he was involved with early in his career is fantastic as well.

I get that you are a worldly man and also an old school new yorker. But some terms that were used in the past are no longer acceptable. Like the ones that describe poorly repaired things. Those are some of the most racist terms around and they aren't used anymore. That being one of them. I don't think can call silver spray paint Mexican chrome anymore, or the old term for duct tape. So I don't use them. You are worldly so you should understand the world and what right and wrong change quickly, and these terms where out of rotation many moons ago. What you hose to say in a workshop is one thing, but you cannot use them on the internet.
