It was reported on the official AMA Superbike site that Kevin Schwantz will race in the Formula Xtreme class this weekend at Road America. He is substituting for Opie Caylor while he awaits a new baby. Read the whole story here.

go you leggy Texan, grew up with Schwantz, hope he still does'nt like using those brakes, remember him alway's trying to park his Suzuki into the back of Rainey into the corner's,with that late braking thing he used to do !!!

Ive heard so much about the Glory days of Schwantz and Rainey but never seen any races from back then.

A lot of people say that if you put Rossi against those guys they'd whup him. I know its impossible to compare riders from different era's but my opinion is that Rossi is better. Just when you think Rossi is actually battling with other riders, he makes his move and Fs off into the distance. To be able to do that 90% of the time is incredible.

Ive read in MCN that Rainey&Schwantz have said themselves that if Valentino was around back then, they'd whup him.

Can someone please put forward an argument as to why Rainey&Schwantz would whup Rossi's butt.

I wouldn't say they would whup up on him. It would be a very close battle but I think the advantage would have to go to Rainey and Schwantz. There is no legitimate way to compare them head to head but the way I see it Rainey and Schwantz were the dominant riders of the era the way Rossi is today. In the two seasons Rossi roded a 500cc two stroke he had one championship but his results were very inconsistant. All the riders who have ridden both the two and four stroke MotoGP bikes say that the two stroke was much more difficult to ride. Considering the technology in tires as well as machinery was not up to the same standards as they are now I think Rainey and Schwantz accomplished more and did so more consistantly than Rossi has.

let's just say schwantz on say an rcv today would have put rossi to the sword,in some rossi stories, one of rossi's idol's was Kevin "riding god"schwantz because of his outlandish riding style and his victory celebration's,stand up and bow flyby's on the peg's.After rainey's accident only for doohan and his honda, schwantz would have been the top dog given a similar bike, but at the time he was cursed with the RGV.Get some vid's of the old battle's between these guy's and you will see what i mean.[34 was our house number where i grew up]

id like to keep out of this cus i must b biasd, but if rossi went bak in time hed learn to handle those bikes, why because hes a riding legeng and great champion,
also ive watched hours of kevin and wayne over and over and over again and man is rainey class true winner, while kevin yes likes to brake late, but eres the thing for me i cant c wot they did on a bike that rossi hasnt i.e. win a race wen every 1 thought he cant, put the bike on completely different lines, find speed wen the guy in front mostly gibs is going flat out, so in my book rossi could do it, but will agree it would b out of this world to c

in 2004 mcn said rossi woudnt win the title because the bike would breakdown a few times and the bike was crap

so i really do take on board wot they say

yay I hear our man Hodgson won the race today in a rain soaked round..

Never mind Ooost hope you didnt get to soaked.

BTW how did Kevin get on in the Extreme class?

I sat in the corners in the pouring rain in the middle of a thunderstorm, I was in turn 5 and on lap 6 or 7 Ben Spies tire chunked and he slowed and right in front of me Hodgson went by, the crowd went pretty crazy, I was excited to see it. Once I saw the rain coming he was my pick and he came good for me. I have never seen rain like that before at a track, it must have been similar to Philip Island 2001. Schwantz was consistantly 7th in the sessions and the race began on a wet but drying track, he was running 7th and crashed out on the 3rd lap. He was OK and picked the bike up and rode it to the pits. He looked a bit uneasy all weekend.

OK, time to bash Ben now................I hang my head in shame and say I havnt seen an old school race, Schwantz et al

..........came to GP about 4/5 years ago.

So, what would be the best race to watch?

Cheers,
Ben.
