Kevin Schwantz FB Statement Regarding COTA

<span style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;COTA not meeting attendance projections. What's the remedy?        Dont piss of the home town hero then expect his supporters to show up,easy really

Be honest with the fans!

As a UK attender each year I pay in the region of £100 for my ticket.

Now if COTA had asked for $150 do the conversion roughly the same.

I wouldn't have batted an eyelid. it's the going rate.

And would have been more than happy to pay say $10max to park.

But to price parking the same as the 3 day event is just wrong.

Its like saying the car park has more or equal value than the guy's on track.

That is wrong.

Doing it as I said above would have come out with the same results of money made but with much better feeling.

Oh yeah and allow folks to take food and drink in.

Another huge difference to any other track I've visited!

The parking is a major put of and just stinks.

Regarding the food situation, a couple of years ago a country park close to where i live decided to have a music festival, the ticket price was ok so lady deal and i went. When we got there all food and drink was taken of us at the gate, (as you can imagine from some of my posts we had a lot with us) , as we had bought tickets and liked a few of the bands  we put up with it, The place was packed and they said there was 8000 through the gate, last year they cancelled as they had only sold 300 tickets, Forcing people to pay again via over priced food and drink is an old and outdated form of robbery and is unexceptable in todays market as Cota will find out to its cost.

It's exactly the same at the Isle of Wight music festival.

I did it religiously from 04 The Who Awesome! to 2010 Foo's IIRC :D

Of course having the boat to cook breakfast on was a slight advantage and a better nights kip.

We did the same as the gang at COTA did eat on the way in and have a good feed afterwards.

Drink only what you needed to thats what I did.

Anyway got a name for the major sponsor for COTA.

A Red McCombs,

Going to see if I can track him down and send an email (friendly) and put some suggestions to him.

I'll let you know how I get on ;)

And don't gouge hotel prices. Scares people off.

I wondered about this.  I had not even checked to see what the going rate was for a room since we rented a vacation house for the weekend.  Were the hotel rooms very expensive?  Just to give you an idea, the house we rented normally goes for $1400 for a weekend.  Its a 5 bedroom, plenty of room.  I don't know the square footage but if I had to guess it was around 3000 sqft.  This GP weekend we rented it for $3600 plus $200 cleaning fees, which we thought was a good deal.  This same house for the F1 was $6500+. The peeps that stayed in the bedrooms paid slightly a bit more, the rest of us paid $185 for the entire weekend.  That is, check in Thursday check out Monday, 5 days 4 nights, thats $46 a night.  Maybe next year you should think about staying with us.  Ha! Just kidding, you wouldn't get any sleep.

Probs before I make an arse of myself judging by your reply ;)

Oops...sorry! I don't think you'd make an arse of yourself at all. They just aren't very open to outside suggestions. It might be interesting to see what kind of response you do get, if any!

COTA's owner, not sponsor.

McCombs is the one that shafted the original F1 rights holder.

He's old Texas oil money - a real hard-... according to some people I know that have had dealings with him - a real-life JR Ewing for whom winning the deal its the thing, doesn't matter how.

(and you got a boat! Me too... 21ft Wharram Cat - not a ....'s show of a music festival to crash, though - but recently I have thought of just putting the sails up and heading west. :))

Yeah got a share in a GK24, 1972 proper racing boat,

Originally they had nothing below, just two benches,

We bought her after she had been sat on a harbour wall in her cradle for 10 years,

Took 12months of graft and love at weekends to get her as she is now,

Full sets of racing sails and fully restored with a galley and can at a squeeze sleep 5,

All done in reclaimed mahogany.

We have two other vintage sailing dingy's in mahogany in the process of restoration but these day's I just don't have the time for a 350mile trip and a ferry to boot each way. ;)

I had a Sadler 32 for 15 years including living on it in Spain for five years,Restored with two others  the Royal Yacht Bloodhound for its then owner Tony Mcgrail and raced it a couple of times.A true historic race boat.

Agree, mostly. McCombs is a real wheeler-dealer, and started an energy enterprise, but not old oil money afaik.

It's funny, I remember looking at the McCombs Energy website & seeing that he became partners with the original founder of the company based on a deal sealed with a handshake. Wonder whatever happened to that guy.

He made a lot of money in used cars & got into the radio business, buying WOAI. That eventually led founding Clear Channel Communications. His dealerships are all over San Antonio & Clear Channel is huge. I think I also heard somewhere that his company started the first internet auto auction site which eventually was bought by ebay to be ebay Motors. Not verified though. He's also had other sports ownership in the past (San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Vikings).

He's not the "owner" of COTA, but sort of a mid-level investor at this point. I believe when they announced him early on as the lead investor to put a Texas face on the project, that he was probably #2 behind Epstein. Now there are many investors & lenders with bigger stakes, from what we hear. Epstein controls all of that & his ... is likely pretty well covered, and McCombs is not nearly at the top.

Thanks for the update. I thought he was the primary shareholder in COTA.

Old info, probably: "<span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:sans-serif;font-size:13px;Hellmund also revealed that Texas billionaire Red McCombs<span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:sans-serif;font-size:13px;was the project's largest investor."
