BIKE TEST SHOCKER FOR THE HOPPER

Any man that can ride a MotoGP bike in a vertical axis knows his way around a motorcycle, right?

Well, not according to the powers that be in Miami, Florida, it seems.

Multiple MotoGP podium-scorer and Kawasaki speed fiend, John Hopkins, recently decided to buy a little scooter to run around town on. But when he went to purchase his stylish Italian Vespa, boasting all of 150cc, he was told he couldn't ride it as... he doesn't hold a motorcycle licence.

Yes, the elbow-down wheelie king of the premier class has never taken a motorcycle test and therefore, when he returns home after the Qatar race next week, he will be found riding around cones and checking mirrors he's not used to having.

'It's going to be pretty weird,' admits John, sounding not entirely convinced about the whole thing. 'There are a lot of MotoGP fans out there in Miami and I've no idea what they're going to think if they spot me on a scooter. I hope the instructor guys don't make me wear a fluorescent yellow jacket; I'll die!'

But why a scooter anyway? Isn't America the country of automobiles?

'It's just for going down to South Beach on and scooters are a pretty popular way to get around. There's not much use for a car down there.'

So what's next? A Kawasaki ZX-10R road bike?

He smiles. 'I don't think so, man. Riding on the road is too dangerous. I'll stick to the scooter back home and the ZX-RR on the track, thanks.'

And if he doesn't pass? You know what these people are like: all those tiny technicalities?

John snorts. 'I'll be pretty upset!'

We wish him the very best of luck. And hope, for his sake, he can resist the temptation to liven up the test by attempting to do the whole thing on the back wheel. Standing up.

Fingers crossed, John. And don't crash: we need you in Jerez!

I'd love to find out the where and when he is taking this test so I could go harass him.

If he's truly living in South Beach than I'll give that marriage of his no more than a year

You are right there mate. I have been to Miami several times (before I got married), and there is never ending temptation. His wife is hot, but there are thousands of hot women in Miami.

....., a license is more than just being able to ride. anyone can do that, its being able to demonstrate u know the road rules.

Nope. A license demonstrates you know what to do to obtain the license. In many countries this does not equate to what I would describe as "being able to ride/drive".

As far as your "anyone can do that" comment, that just goes to show that what you consider riding/driving ability and what I do, differ hugely.

BTW, who are you calling an .....?

You've seen American bike riders on the road then? Many are posers and dopes, who only got the bike to look cool. I went down with only rider experience being riding a dirt bike and got my motorcycle endorsement.

this must be a florida rule. Most bike owners in California don't have a motorcycle license, but have one for cars. I won;t be surprised if Hopkins fails the ridiculous test, that we all have to take here.

You guys can't seriously believe being a race rider inherently makes one a good road rider?

Put it this way:

If you went out on the road and rode like in a GP ..... you would die.

and conversely....

if you were a street rider and rode in a Gp like a Street Rider ...... you would die. ( only perhaps in 2 senses of the word die in this one
<
)

Legal road riding and GP riding ........ chalk and cheeze.

^^^Unfortunately I have to agree with you, but I will go even further and say that even the guys that possess a valid license cannot perform a maneuver as simple as a u-turn. Motorcycling in the states is still viewed as "transportainment" if you will allow me to use a word that does not exist.

I'm sure Pedro would have trouble passing that exam since he happens to have a problem with starting from a standing stop.

Where the hell are you getting this information? Your friends? By "bike" you mean motorized two wheel vehicle right and not a cyclist?

he isn't even going to get his licence for a bike, it's a SCOOTER licence. here you can drive a scooter too if you have a carlicence, if you're 16 you must take a test before getting the scooter licence
<
think it's ridiculous he has to take a test for getting his scooterlicence

one more time: he has to do the test for a scooterlicence
