Nice work old boy

Enjoy your retirement

Indeed......Jerez 05 anyone!

This is sad news, whats worse (as already been mentioned) - being taken out by the guy who's got your seat next year

Who think's Ducati's repair bill budget will need to be increased next year?

Well I guess the Rossi curse has done it's job. Sete never won another race.

It's a sad thing. Sete was a great racer. He was truly a thorn in Rossi's ... for the last few years and that just makes for amazing races.

Quite a shame.

Takes guts to walk away from something you have loved doing for so long. I hope he has luck with whatever he decides to do next.

He has my respect, and although I respect his decision to retire, I must say I hope he changes his mind for the '08 season, a joy to watch him race when he was at full strength. Great guy and great racer. From his last comment <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>"If I had accepted the offers to continue just for the sake of carrying on then it wouldn't have made me happy especially if it was just for money," he said. it seems he also had ethics and morals. Sorry to see you go Gibbers, hopefully we'll see you again, maybe in a team boss role?

Wow, the BBC have it as a major sports headline. Thats nice to see.

Sad to see him go. Best of luck in all his future endeavors.

If there ever was a guy that rode with passion and always wore his heart on his sleeve, it was SG. I admire him quitting now and not just staying on for the money, cool move. I thought that's what Bayliss was doing for a while before he went back to WSB. Sete doesn't have another series to jump back into so we can only speculate to what degree his shoulder injury influenced his decision, but again to his credit, it hasn't cited that as anything to do with it. Rossi never had a more tenacious adversary. Good luck to him.

good photo skid.. good memories of great battles with Vale!!

on another note.. did anyone else read he had an offer from Sito Pons?? so does that mean he's going to be coming back? Pons that is..

Yup, and hope that people notice this as an indication of perhaps some of the respect he deserves.

Yes, some guys hang around too much, then end up making themselves look bad.

I read Sito Pons somewhere in the article.
Maybe Pons wanted to come back if he has a solid rider like SG?

Too bad he is leaving, he could really show some development work on the Ilmor.

I don't think he will have to worry about a job. Bultaco coroporate board member maybe??

Me!!

P.S.Hopefully from promis payed to both riders

Nice shot there skid,

I did read today that Kawasaki did offer Gibbers a ride and he turned them down.

Good luck to him.

Just the news i didn't want to hear. I have admired Sete in his racing for quite a few years now, and to me (maybe no so many others) he seemed like a good fella. When he lost his edge, it almost made me sad to think about it, most people knew that he would never return to his peak. Jerez '05 gave me hope... but i guess it was just empty.

We are farewelling a brilliant racer in his time, i think its truly sad to see him leave.

man i make it sound like he's dead

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (CaptainSnow @ Nov 9 2006, 01:32 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>What do you think will cost more?
Stoner's crash bill?
or
Stoner's bonuses for finishing up top?

well if its not one its gonna be the other .... hes very "go hard or go home" or "win it or bin it" kinda rider.

Damn

Gibbers is awsome. Such a great racer, such horrible luck. I'll never forget him. At Motegi I saw him doing a show for Bridgestone. Him and Capriex were supposed to be playing paper-scissors-rock competitions and giving away Bridgestone hats, but they just threw them into the crowd at random intervals instead. One of the people who caught them was wearing one of those big yellow Rossi T-shirts, so Sete told him his shirt was a fashion disaster (in Japanese), then told him to take it off. Later on he apoligised to the guy and said, "You're a good guy, it's just a bad shirt". That's the Gibernau I'll remember, not the fuming poduim after Jerez, not the DNFs, the bad luck, the mocking. Just the good bloke who can tell his Grandkids "I kicked Valentino Rossi's ... back in the day". What a champ.

I wonder about this retirement. Not so long ago he had a brief chance to test the Duacti 800 (at the time he commented it would much more like riding a 500, which he said he preferred). Most, if not all, teams/manufacturers aren't in the habit of letting potential opposition riders test their new machinery...

And he was in negotiations with Ducati at one time for next year, with money said to be the sticking point. Next thing we know Stoner has his ride for next year, and there were no other good rides avaiable. Finishing his career on a Kawasaki or an Ilmor obviously didn't look too appealing (understandable). He made a point of saying that he's never ridden just for the money (given his family and a long and successful career he shouldn't need any anyway!), but I wonder if he's regretting playing hardball with Ducati now?

Few riders ever get to retire on their own terms, and fewer still get to go out on top. Events (and possibly injuries) may have forced his hand, but I think he's made the right decision to retire.

He was a good, fast rider, and in 2003 and 2004 a legitimate championship contender. He faded as 2005 went on, and could never really get going in 2006. Although, if only... two 4th places at Philip Island and Motegi hinted that maybe things were finally headed in the right direction. Who knows what he could have done at Estoril and Valencia?

Its a sad day my friends, I am going to miss Gibbers.

I won't forget what a great racer he was and a humble guy.

I am not going to forget Rossi's treatment of Gibbers after that race incident all those years ago, Rossi can learn alot about manners from Gibbers.

I wish Gibbers all the best.

He is a great racer... too bad he doesn't want to ride just for the sake of riding... The paddock will miss a great guy.. he is one of the only people that waves happily to the camera..

In Stoner's defense, he didn't take out Gibbers... he crashed in front of Gibbers and Gibbers knocked Stoner's bike and fell too... I really hope Stoner will calm down a little and listen to his crew chief.. he has a reputation for not listening to LC.

Could be the reason he got fired. Why would you hire someone if they didn't do what you tell them? Or it could have been the crash bill. LCR still don't have a major sponsor, and carbon fiber RCV farings ain't cheap.
I think his main problem is a lack of maturity. He seems to have improved, but there's still a lot of work to do there.
