Fiat Sponsor replacement eludes Yamaha for 2011

he like many others jump on any wagon that wins
<

i would have thought telefonica (sp?) would have jumped on as sponsor by now... would love to see Spies with a USA sponser..Pepsi Yamaha perhaps
<

Pepsi Yamaha isn't going to happen - they are big on AMERICAN motorsport - think NASCAR and MotoGP still only has a small following in US. Telefonica probably won't go with Yamaha - they're practically a monopoly and don't really need the advertising. Bud and or Miller would maybe go with Spies, if he was the #1 rider, but won't sponsor Hogay. It's scary, but Yamaha must have known that Fiat would withdraw as soon as Rossi left them. I hope someone sponsors them as it would be really bad if the grid got any smaller. Maybe Hogay will do what Rossi did for Yamaha and give back part of his pay and sponsor earnings. But then maybe pigs will fly or Suzi win a MotoGP

Companies spend money on sponsorship where it will get a return on investment. For the first half of the season at least the cameras on and off track will be focused on the fabulous looking Ducati regardless of where it is running. If Lorenzo runs off and wins the first 5 races he will be lucky to get a couple of lines written about him. Also if he wins and does one of those pathetic post race celebrations everyone switches off the TV so once again no ROI for a company.

Now that both Ducati and Honda have held the launches of their MotoGP bikes, attention turns to Yamaha. The factory Yamaha team, with 2010 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo and 2010 Rookie of the Year Ben Spies, are due to be presented officially to the press on Monday, February 21st, the day before the second test is to be held at Sepang.

The big question, of course, is who Yamaha will unveil as their title sponsor. Fiat left Yamaha at the end of 2010, departing at the same time as Valentino Rossi, and rumors have been circulating since last summer about who will take Fiat's place. The two names linked most often to Yamaha's MotoGP team were Malaysian-based budget airline Air Asia, and Malaysian petroleum giant Petronas, but so far, the two Malaysian companies have seemed reluctant to step in and take on the role of title sponsor.

Paddock rumors persist that Yamaha will be launched without a title sponsor, with the bike dressed in the corporate Yamaha blue livery, something akin to the livery shown off at the first Sepang test. These rumors were further fueled today by the list of attendees at the M1 launch included in the press release: All of the people on the list are Yamaha employees, with no external names mentioned. Whether people not on that list will appear at the bike launch at the Sepang circuit remains to be seen.

Yamaha will no doubt find its sponsor before March and will still be very strong in 2011 -- the bike to beat. Their IL4 engine may have reached its development peak though, and its retirement is likely to follow the retirement of its father, Furusawa. The capacity increase to 1000cc is hardly going to change that. For 2012 or 2013 at the latest a major redesign might be called for, -- they'll also have to go "V" probably... A completely new bike.

What evidence do you have for a change? The cross-plane crank I4 has worked very well up till now. Why should it suddenly have less future thaqn a V4?

Yup - I really do agree with you. But just think - if we went back to power characteristics like the 500 2 strokes - Rossi would ride round by himself, with Capirossi half a lap behind him - the rest, maybe excluding Hayden would fall off in turn 1. Somewhere there needs to be a fix for MotoGP - less techy than now, but not all the way back to WSBK. Maybe it's a lot less rules and let the biggest spenders and that includes sponsors, smartest developers, most passionate and motivated contenders win - just keep it to ICE machines with 2 wheels and less than 1500cc.

I think there is strong evidence that perhaps one rider may very well be half a lap in front of Rossi. There has been talk of somebody with the unique ability to ride bikes with a savage power delivery. Now ,if I could only remember who that was

i wanna see Spies on a Pepsi or Lucky Strikes M1
<
.. jl can .... off all i care

Or Coca Cola M1... or Budweiser M1

I wonder how much Fiat actually kicked in cuz having to pay Rossi isnt cheap. Yamaha without Rossi and sponsor might actually be less. I dint know but was Fiat kickin in enuf to offset Rossis salary?

Italian car manufacturer pays for Italian rider is not a great stretch of the imagination. Doesn't seem to have reduced the budget enough for anyone to take up the opportunity though.

Hahah, I'm so amused by this. Yamaha gets what they deserve. When Rossi says "do what I want", you obey! Excuse me photoshop skills

Jumks didnt Rossi give back part of his wages to yam last year?

Because all the 'V' bikes seem to have less problems squeezing out more bhps, while the IL4 seems more limited by design in that sense. Each year it becomes a bit tougher for the IL4 to keep up with the V engines and compensate with the other qualities of a bike that is shorter and more nimble.

If the Yamaha engineers manage to get the required power out of the IL4, then no problem of course.

Evil Rossi is gone from Yamaha and now he dosen't allow anybody to sponsor Yamaha?

How can a rider get this much power? I hope He never get's his hand on nucleaire wapens. Wasn't Rossi responsible for 9, 11?

Oh who was that on a red bike???? - powered with lots of horses by Ducati and made rideable with ECU and gyroscope electronics by Magneto Marelli before anybody else caught up with the development. I think Stoner's good too - Aragon and PI in 2010 being 2 great examples, but he's never done anything on a bike as raw as the 500 2-strokers.

Yamaha should approach Mr Branson, his pockets may be a little streched from F1, but somehow it just seems rather appropriate with JLo about to be seriously penatrated for the 1st time

comparing an 800 to a 500 is absolutely absurd and insulting to the heros that mastered the stroker beasts.

This takes boning to all new levels

Yeah!! Those big bad 500's had like 180+ HP and some torque too!

No clue, .........

I think you are making possibly an erronoius assumption that an I4 cant match a v4 for hp. I would like an engineers take on that.

More likely that Yamaha cant get the hp that Honda and Ducati can for different reasons.

Suzukis v4 has equal or less hp than a Yamaha, so that doesn,t help your line of reasoning

Its tough debunking another Rossi myth. Somehow (
<
), just because Rossi has competed on 500cc two strokes and Stoner hasn,t, you make the extraordinary leap of faith that Rossi would be better on one. The evidence before us over the last few years suggestts the opposite. I think Stoner raced on two strokes and won on them too....................................on the dirt as well
