Probably have to add another 1500-2000 rpm as well with different rods and pistons. I also doubt that it use the same øhlins components, exhaust, and of course completly different software.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (roger-m @ Aug 8 2008, 12:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>wsb do two short races rather than 1 longer race so both championships require different talents from there riders.

Each race of the WSBK double headers are pretty close in length to Moto GP. For instance this year the Moto GP winner at Assen was at 42 minutes total time, and the two WSBK race winners at Assen finished at about 37 minutes each race. So not far off.

-WSBK currently has 14 venues for a total of 28 races.

-MotoGP currently has 19 venues for a total of 19 races.

Personally I love the WSBK double headers, more racing and more margin for error if a rider messes up or has a technical problem. One missed race or mistake in Moto GP and the championship can be thrown. From a spectator standpoint WSBK has been delivering. The double header formula is excellent (also one used by the AMA superbike) giving fans more to watch. I still love Moto GP but rarely does it have me jumping up and down or on the edge of my seat lately (exception Laguna).

The differences in the bikes and regulations have been well explained above and which series' format offers the most entertainment is very much a matter of opinion. However i thought i'd offer some evidence/numbers which help to show that motogp is inhabited by the worlds best riders.

In the 20 years of world superbike racing the top 5 in the final standings has featured approximately 40 riders who previously rode permanently in grand prix, and 5 (a quater) of the world titles were won by ex gp riders. In the same time scale the top 5 in the 500cc/motogp standings has only featured an ex world superbike rider twice.

has that anything to do with opportunity rather than individual skill ? always easer to go down rather than up.

I think everyone is pretty much on the same page but I often wonder how well some of the top riders would do if they suddenly moved from gp to wsbk.

Also, who is the better rider: a wsbk champ or a 250gp champ?

It is hard to compare them you can really only say that a rider is the best in his category.

I think of it like football... motogp is the premier league
<

I would rank them in this order;

Motogp (800cc)
WSBK
AMA
Motogp (250cc)
WSS
Motogp (125cc)
BSK

interesting how you ranked 3 world series under a domestic series, how did you work that out ?

AMA 3rd????? You're having a laugh?? How can you possibly make this assumption?

damn andrew... ama 3rd??? i think not. i wouldn't think of the rankings in a linear sense. more like a branched off family tree sort of thing.

Great analogy there.

Well i'll remind you that opertunities are not picked out of a hat or given by coincedence. But as you say, it is easier to go down, the order of things is emebedded in most racing fans minds.

It really depends on the context of better? If you mean who is a better rider you would need a standard by which to judge all, I tend to use motogp as an absolute standard (because it is the pinnacle of the sport) so I consider 250cc riders to be the next best thing.

Another way of looking at things would be the prestige asociated with achievements in each class, but that depends a lot on who and where you are. To some people 125cc and 250cc titles mean nothing, whereas i would consider a Grand Prix world title more prestigous than any achievement on a Superbike. Some people believe their domestic Superbike championships to be better than the worlds, but I don't believe the best riders in one country would happen to be the best riders in the world in a racing dicipline that spans so much of the world. To some people a Suzuka 8-hour race is worth more than anything else in the world...................................
