Engine allocation

During last nights Motogp race they put up the number of engines that the riders have used. Stoner, Lorenzo have already used 3 out of there allocated (6) engines. So 3 fresh engines to last another 14 rounds? It will be interesting to see if they make to the end of the season on just 6 engines.

I think it is inevitable that we will have people starting from pit lane this year. Every time it happens it will further cement Dorna's lack of understanding of the law of unintended consequences. It will only have an impact on those that are fighting for the championship. Will be funny though when there are only half a dozen bikes on the grid and the rest are starting from pit lane. Maybe they will change to 2 bikes per row instead of 3 which used to be 4.

Because they have used 3 may not be a problem because I believe they will use 2 engines as mules in Friday and Saturday morning practice sessions and keep 4 good engines for races and qualifying.

But will play into Vales hands... His team will be 2 engines, at least, ahead!!!!

Maybe championship not so bad for the gifted one!!!!

I think they used 3 engines, not used up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but they can use all of the 6 engines at any time during the year? So it's not like once they take a new one the previous ones are in the bin.

As I stated before the season started I would like to see a number on the fairing that shows what engine they are using. Seeing as though the engines limits will most likely have a big impact on the championship the fans should be able to see this information with ease. I for one am extremely interested in the strategies the teams will use to maximise their engines over the coarse of the season.

Yamaha addressed this at the beginning of the season. They are rotating the engines between practice, quali, and the races.

For instance, they used engine 1 for practice and quali at Qatar, then they used engine 2 for the race. At Jerez they continued running engine 1 during practice and qualifying, then they used engine 2 in the race.

Eventually engine 2 will be cycled to practice and qualifying duty and engine three will take it's place as the racing engine. Apparently, engine three is being used at Mugello, but engines 1 and 2 are probably not spent.

I was thinking the same. Vale will come back after missing several race's due to his injury only to clinch the title in the remaining races because he is the only one with engines left
<
<
.... can you imagine the conspiracy theories that will fly around here
<
stonerboys will claim rossi did not really break his leg but went fishing on a pre arranged trip authorized by dorna which is why they introduced the engine rule in the first place
<

Seriously though, this sucks. what would happen at the end of the season if all the teams had run out of engines. Would the whole grid start from pit lane (except rossi) ? Would they scrap pole qualifying ? dorna are morons.

Yeah... and maybe the Tooth Fairy will leave me a Ducati in the garage. Vale will be lucky to return

this season at all.

Rossi's replacement will have to use Rossi's engines. For this reason I think they will strictly enforce the rider replacement rule where as JB referred to the rule being ignored in the past. If they don't replace him I think it is fair that he lose engines on a prorata basis ie. miss 3 races lose 1 engine, miss 6 races lose 2 engines.

I think this could be an option in an attempt to keep it fair but if that's is the case then maybe riders should also have to complete the same amount of laps in practice and quali and riders who crash out of a race early a couple of times per season without destroying an engine should also suffer the same fate. All of our scenarios just show how stupid and ill thought out this engine rule is.

if it gets to the point of many riders starting in pit lane.....they will have to have a qualifying session for pit row.

The top 2 get to start in pit lane...the rest have to start back at the concession stands and can not engage the clutch until all autograph requests are filled with the people they are in line with. Those riders better pray for an unpopular food vendor (like pickled beets/eggs) and a small line!!!

I think we need V to do an analysis to see if there has been a drop off in laps through practice and qualifying this year in comparison to last year. It would be interesting on a rider basis but even more so on a manufacturer basis. It would certainly indicate concern about engine life if there was a noticeable drop off in laps for all bikes from a manufacturer.

No link mate, it was at the end of the race, after the riders points and manufacture standings just before the podium presentation.

If we really get more than a couple of riders starting from the pitlane this year then the engineers concerned should be pretty ashamed of themselves, and then be fired. Obviously freak accidents and one off issues will always catch someone off guard, but if any of the motogp teams are stupid enough to be running this season with engines that wont actually go the distance it'd look pretty ebarassing.

I actually saw this stat onscreen prior to the start of the Mugello race. Everyone one two engines but Casey & Jorge who are on engine number three...

Tom, I'd say it'll be more a surprise if we don't find one or two riders starting from pit lane. Embarrassed engineers - isn't that an oxymoron?

I just don't understand why everyones acting like motogp teams have never designed an engine for a particular lifespan before.
