Destructive Power of the Media- the end of reason.

What is truth?

What are our sources of information? The media, the internet, forums..........

Casey won two world titles ( Maybe 3 if the Honda can adjust to the new Bridgestones), has won close to 40 race wins, but he has ultimately lost. Many are the reasons for his retirement, but one factor above all others was behind his disillusionment.

The Rossi phoenomenom(RP). Even as Rossi can,t win , the RP ultimately makes others lose. Rossi: his speed his skill and his charisma. An appealing package as it stands. But give the media with dorna,s encouragement free reign, then you have the RP, a drawcard for motogp, but also a monster. Just as the RP had its good side, promoting the sport, you also have the dark side, the creation of villains, the misrepresenting of truth. Rossi won through skill and daring. His adverseries won through good luck or unfair advantages. We all know how Hayden in 2006 and Stoner in 2007 were treated, were not given the due respect for their titles. Arrab and Jumkie have covered this topic well. To Stoner , this treatment was quite a shock. His former hero Rossi, began to treat him with a degree of contempt. The press became his enemy. Especially during his period of illness. Why did nobody believe him? Casey had his good and his bad points. He was prone to temper and reluctant to understand his off track obligations, but then he was always direct and honest......and yet most of the press didn,t believe him. At the end of 2011, with another world title, much of the Stoner story was being rewritten. Previous doubters finally understood how good he was all those years on the Ducati. That he won in 2007 , not because he was on the Ducati, but in spite of it.

Aticles like this strated to appear

To be fair , a small portion of the media understood his true ability, our dear Krop being one of them.

So, come 2012, I expected to see a new calm CS, a person finally at peace. But no, sections of the Spanish and Italian press still doubted the truth behind CS,s illness in 2009. That hurt Casey. Far more than any of us imagined. The resentments in him that began in 2007 were still festering away. His mistrust of much of the motogp media had been present all those years and was aggravated again. And then, when confidential conversations with team members appeared in the Spanish press, his mistrust rose to crisis level. It was then that he decide to retire. Again, Mr Noyes has a very good article describing the situation.

http://moto-racing.s...placeable-pt-i/

So it is all history now. CS will leave at the end of the year. Many other factors have been cited.....the decline of competitive rides for the likes of CE and RDP, his family and too many years on the road. While all of these things contributed, especially being on the road from such a young age, I believe that the main factor was that he never felt that he was unreservedly appreciated. That not being VR , as michael has said, was always his problem. Being a world champion in 2007 and 2011 still didn,t feel as he had imagined. Post 2011 title, Casey said it felt better than 2007 because few people were discounting it as they had in 2007(unfairly faster bike). You can hear him say similar things on many occasions. To become best in the world, but to still continually have his detractors. Is casey too sensitive? Maybe, but I think many of us could easily understand his attitude. So ultimately the motogp press and much of its fanbase has much to answer for. Not that that they care or even understand the harm that they have done with their misinformed utterances. So ultimately the RP, the monster created by dorna, the media and the bopper army have won. They have purged CS from the series. Maybe if Casey were more "resilient" that wouldn,t be so, but, I, for one. can,t blame him. The ultimate irony, is that, because of the space left at Honda, Valentino has a chance to (partly) resurrect his legacy. It would seem a formality for VR to be signed by Honda to be on a factory bike, whether in the Repsol team or not, for 2013. Until CS decided to leave , Rossi had few options, and was most likely looking at more years humiliation on the Ducati, or retirement. Valentino owes Casey a thankyou card, not that he will send one.

Most of what I have said here has already stated in excellent posts by Arrab, Jumkie, Lex, Michael etc. So what is new?

To truly understand the power of the media.

Good when it is done properly, but destructive when it is done badly , and unfortunately that is happening more often than not.

People base their understanding of what is true through media outlets. Most people are lazy, and pretty dumb. They usually go to flashy portals that give them small information bites. The media outlets know this , so they give the dumb punters, flashy news programmes or websites, that give the idiots the small glib headlines. The more sensational the better. The more they promote the interests of the media moguls the better. Take one Rupert Murdoch for instance. I,m sure most people would know of him......Australia,s most toxic little gift to the world. Not my doing, but I sincerely apologise. Rupert has made it into an artform the practices of misinformation, hidden agendas and most worryingly, regime change. On all 3 continents, Rupert has been actively undermining governments not to his liking. Obama, one of the most intelligent and acomplished presidents ever, has been constantly hamstrung by the Murdoch press.Somehow, he is the one to blame for difficult times in the USA , while he is doing his best to fix the mess created by an orgy of greed and mismanagement under the Bush regime. In Australia, we seem to be headed for a new goverment in 2013 , because the Murdoch empire is actvely engaged in undermining the current, very competent goverment at every opportunity. The current goverment avoided the fallout from the GFC, avoided recession, avoided the collapse of our construction industries, avoided a blowout in unemployment, and is the envy of most foreign governments. Our treasurer was named international treasurer of the year. To avoid all the nasty possible consequences of the GFC, an extra 20 billion over what the opposition wanted, was spent. But unemplyment benefits and costs to ressurrect the construction industry far exceeding this amount have been avoided. Also sadly needed school infrastructure was delivered. Claims of supposed waste by the Murdoch empire are false if anybody actually took the trouble to read the inquiry report on the scheme. We are also starting a scheme(Carbon Tax) to actually do something about the planets fuutre,. However because of the constant misinformation, if not lies, about climate change by this news monster, having over 70% domination of Australian media, now about 2/3 of the population apparently don,t want a carbon tax, whweas 3-4 years ago 2/3 of the populatio wanted strong action on climate change. News corps, constant war on this issue has converted about 1/3 of our population to this inconsistent postion. Did I say I,m not particularly proud to be an Aussie any more? We are becoming the new USA.......spoilt, fat and stupid. Bad luck mericans we are now no 1!

.....and after about 20 years, finally the australian legal system put to rights a huge miscarriage of justice.Azaria Chamberlain was taken by a dingo. Her parents didn,t muder her after all. And yet the majority of our media outlets crucified this couple all those years ago......because it sold a lot of papers. And guess what? The Murdoch press was in the forefront of this process-headlines like "Azaria" means sacrifice in the wilderness. Charcter assassination to sell a story. Lindy(the mum) looked funny, didn,t react like other people so she must be guilty . Casey.........

Sorry about deviation to Aussie politics. Climate change. Same thing. Pov reckons climate scientists have a vested interest in fabricating reports to guarantee themselves jobs. Most amazingly stupid thing to come out of a smart mans brain! You could equally (stupidly) try that bit of logic to any profession. Think about it. Who really stands to benefit from no carbon tax, emission trading schemes etc? The big guys, the wealthy guys, the guys raping the planet to buy another megayacht. And you can,t see it?? Not if the same guys and their mates own all the media outlets and spin all the crap that seems to blind the population so easily. It is so obvious , but people are too dumb to notice. In Australia, one of our mining magnates is buying into one of the few non-Murdoch papers , so she can spin her own pro-mining message in the media. It doesn,t come much more obvious than that, but most of the local idiots here are too dumb to notice. As long as they have their latest iphone and bmw 3 series life is good and who gives a ....!

So , media power. For fecks sake, be discerning, read widely, don,t read anything owned by News Corp, and have a good long hard think about who gets to benefit from a particular news story. Exsplezeta continues the RP by smoothing a path for VR to a factory Honda, and all of the billionares on the planet are laughing their way to another party. I will miss Casey Stoner. We need an Aussie in there. Maybe I am a bit of a boner! haha I still watched gp without Doohan and will again without Stoner. At least i have never belittled Vrs achievements on track, and I believe he will be back near the top on a Honda. Its just a shame Casey wont be battling with Jorge and Valentino on equivalent machinery for the many years that I had hoped for. I think we all wanted to see that!

ps. I have been absent for a while because...

A) As a boner, since news of retirement, I have gone into withdrawl and have tucked my self into a little ball mumbling to myself.

B Health issues

C) Jumkie wont reply to my PMs

D) All of the above.

E) Roger came back.

Great post, Sir! No, actually it's ....... Fantastic! I've got to agree, strongly, with most every point you made.

Agree.

Fitting right into the "dumb and lazy" catagory is anyone who immediatley quotes fresh stories, or even ones that have had a month to waffle around, from Italian or Spanish media.

...or Ezpeleta.
<

Personaly it irks me how much riders have to say on any given topic these days, although this is largely a by-product of the so called media and it's presumptions that it knows what people are thinking, what their mind set is, and why they did what they did.

Anyone would attempt to come out and clarify their position as not being what he media portay it to be. Unfortunately, that usualy gives the crap side of the media more ammunition with which to justify their comments and opinions regarding their "victim".

I have to give credit to Rossi for being able to turn large sections of this inept, and huge, portion of the media to his advantage. It is definately a skill, and whilst not being a fan or finding this attractive to watch.....credit where credit is due.

Oh to be Darryl Beattie and be able to slip out with " I used to love turning up to ride the bike, now I find due to all the politics and ........, I don't even want to be at the track."

No in depth explanations given, or needed, to justify his decision.

Stoner, from the interview he gave with Beattie is in just about the same frame of mind as Beattie was then.........only Stoner has to respond to comments from Dorna/Ezpeleta.......and just about every man, his dog and it's fleas.

Or to be Nicky Lauda...........

"I quit"

"What do you mean, you quit !!??"

" I QUIT !!...I'm sick of driving 'round in circles like a ....... ..... !"

ITW with Stoner at Assen. "Riders are now puppets. We have to race for the fans, for the sponsors... Nothing for ourselves."

So ultimately the RP, the monster created by dorna, the media and the bopper army have won.

I disagree. The kneejerk reactions to Stoner's retirement and the reasons he gave for it were partially very negative and disrespectful. Especially from those that make their living from the motogp (Schwantz, Pernat, Ezpeleta) and of course from those fans that were looking for any stick to beat him with in any case.

But now, just a handful of weeks down the road, both the media and a large portion of the fans (even those that are strong detractors of Stoner) are echoing many of his sentiments.

His resignation from the sport is was a defiant stance against the establishment. I'd say that in the end, he may have lost the battle but won the war.

I didn't go anywhere !

Great post, Buyip. I think you are spot on in most areas. At the moment, it looks like Casey has lost. But in the long run, he will be the winner. He has won 2 titles and is set for life financially by using his amazing gift. For the people that can't appreciate him, well, it's their loss. Loyalty is the same as love - blind. In ten years time (maybe a lot less) he will be able to walk down the street and nobody will know who he is, which will probably suit him fine.

In this modern, godless and superficial world, people look for meaning. People look for idols. That's where people like Rossi come in. To many, he is not just a rider, he is a God. But, these gods (like Rossi) are mortal and get old like the rest of us. The last 2 years at Ducati has brutally exposed Rossi as a flawed human being, like the rest of us. Sure, the guy has amazing talent, but he eats, ..... and pisses like everyone else. If he gets a top bike next year, he will be under enormous pressure to prove that he is the GOAT, like his fans claim. One of the big problems is that Dorna has a new golden boy - Marquez. And Marquez is young, hungry and fearless. Rossi is gonna have his work cut out for him. Lets not forget Jorge Lorenzo, either. He is still young, fast, talented and hungry. And I sincerely believe Lorenzo has improved greatly since he was having those battles with Rossi a couple of years back.

I'll be the first to admit, that I am no fan of Vale. But I hope this doesn't end badly for him. His contempt for Stoner is not his fault. He has just lived his life believing the ........ that Dorna and the media have fed him. My fear is that Dorna will be finished with him one day (soon) and dump him on the scrap heap. After all, everything in the modern world is disposable - even gods.

I have to say, I don't agree with you about Obama. I reckon he is just an auto-cue reading puppet that is controlled by the same people who control the republicans - it's the 'good cop, bad cop' routine - where Obama is the good cop bringing 'hope' and 'change' to replace the 'bad cop' (Bush). Putting in a guy with dark skin emphasizes the whole 'change' and 'hope' crap, as well. Most people have fallen for his manufactured ........ charm: hook, line, and sinker. There is plenty of info on Obama's origins, financiers and powerful supporters around if you want to take the trouble to look - and they're ALL insanely rich and powerful white pricks. Or, you could just believe the media.... I agree that they are possibly gonna use him for the GFC blame (as well as other stuff) - that was their (ruling elite's) plan all along, perhaps. Anyway, I've said enough, this aint a political forum...

This is actually my fear also as I do see the day when DORNA decide that the 'use by' date of Valentino has expired and totally expect DORNA to at some point decide to throw him out as if he were dirty dishwater.

No matter what one thinks of Rossi, the person, or what they think of his career and any 'perceived' advantages he has received, the simple fact remains that were it not for the persona of Rossi the sport would in all likelihood not have attained the level of public support and to a degree acceptance that it has today.

Personally I started watching MGP a long time ago and whilst yes in Australia we did get small snippets of results in our main stream news bulletins when we had a rider who was performing well, we did not get the widespread media coverage the sport receives today.

Whilst Rossi is not 100% responsible for this as the country has produced both Gardner and Doohan before Stoner, it goes without saying that in the vast majority of reports there is always mention of Rossi, even today during this down time. He is as critical to the media cover of the sport today as he was when he first appeared as the all smiling, all conquering teenager all those years ago with the personality and how that so attracted a new breed of supporter and business investment.

Sad as it may be for some to admit, but Rossi whilst certainly deserving of reaping what one has sown is not deserving of being thrown out and discarded like yesterday's newspaper either by DORNA or followers of the sport.

Of course Dorna will throw Vale on the scrapheap. As soon as he is no longer a cash cow he's gone just like anyone else. Dorna are only interested in making money.

Strewth !.......what channel's do you get ?

...Apart from when PI rolls around, it's the usual 3 minute blurb on the news...if that ...besides the telecast.....and what kind of lunacy is it where Moto2 and 3 are on one HD, and then we have to change channels to Ten !!!???.....I'm not couch bound or breathless at having to move digit or reach for the remote......but what moron (Sorry James..you pasty fat rich .......) came up with that stroke of genius ??!!

Woah nelly !....off track excursion......

Why can't motorsport be telecast like ... F.L (politicaly correct sport where there are an extra set of goals... "Awww, it's ok.we'll give you a point for trying....)

Grrrrrrrrr
