I don't really know the rules all that well, but because MGP site put the order in that way, I'm pretty sure I'm right. The reason is:
- Rossi wins the championship rather than Lorenzo, because (although both have the same amount of 1sts, 2nds and 3rds) he has a 16th place which is better than Lorenzo's Retirement.
- Stoner would obviously be only third, cause he has no second places.
Case solved. Stoner is actually 3rd in the championship
It all depends on the way you look at it but yes, if the season was to finish now then Stoner would finish third based upon the countback system, but the season is not yet finished so whether he is third or first or joint first is a moot point. I just look at it from the view of a football match, where the score may be 2-2 at half-time. At that point people do not look at goal difference across a year and say that one team is leading the other, no, it is still a draw at that point.
My own personal opnion is that at this stage we have a three way tie for the World Championship but if people do not want to look at it that way, then so be it but the fact remains that all riders are tied on points and that, at this stage of the year where a countback is not yet in play equals a drawn or tied or shared lead.
