Bradley Smith will graduate to MotoGP in 2013 after agreeing a three-year deal with Tech 3 that includes a further year in Moto2 before he steps up to the top level.

The 20-year-old Briton is currently sixth in the Moto2 standings for Tech 3 in his first year in the category. He moved to the series after five seasons in 125cc, the highlight of which was second in the 2009 title race.

His new contract with Tech 3 guarantees a MotoGP race seat for 2013 and '14 after one more year in the intermediate category.

"I am thrilled to have signed a three-year deal with the Tech 3 Racing Team and I am looking forward to continuing the excellent relationship we've developed in 2011," said Smith.

"I have a fantastic relationship with [team boss] Herve [Poncharal], my crew chief Tom Jojic and all my crew, who all have an amazing passion for racing. It is that dedication and desire to succeed that convinced me to join Tech 3 in 2011, so to be staying until the end of 2014 is the perfect scenario for me.

"There was never any doubt in my mind that Tech 3 would be the best option to develop my career. It has been flattering to have attracted interest from so many top teams in Moto2, but the opportunity to move to MotoGP in 2013 was simply too good for me to turn down.

"To think I'll be riding a Yamaha 1000cc MotoGP bike just over a year from now is hard to believe. I've worked so hard for many years to earn the chance to be given an opportunity like this, and now it has come I intend to grab it with both hands."

Smith confirmed that Tech 3 had initially asked him to move straight into MotoGP for 2012, as it has a seat available alongside Cal Crutchlow following Colin Edwards' move to Forward Racing's new MotoGP project.

"Tech 3 gave me the chance to move to MotoGP in 2012 and it was an honour to be even considered at this stage of my career," said Smith.

"The decision to stay in Moto2 was one of the hardest of my life but I believe that together, we can be fighting at the front from the start of next season and pushing to challenge for the championship."

Nice

will be fun to see him in MotoGP. And another year in Moto2 is probably a wise decision.

Excellent news!! Brad has his future sorted and can concentrate fully on progressing in moto2 for another season.

Count me as one who just doesnt get the draw except for the passport, and the probability that Dorna will be subsidizing his contract. Nothing against the kid, but there are more deserving riders in paddocks around the globe.

Bradl, Marquez and Iannone will most likely make their way to motogp this year or next, other than that there aren't many riders more qualified so i don't see why Brad shouldn't get a shot

Add me to the list. Perhaps next season we'll see something remarkable from him.

That could be said of alot of riders but I say good luck to him, it will probably be as far up the pole as he gets regardless of results.

For a French team, they seem to have an affinity for riders from the UK lately, Toseland, Crutchlow, Smith, interest in Laverty....not saying anything is wrong with that just musing out loud.

Its because Carmelo helps pay their salary. Herve loves it, more money in his pocket.

Good luck to him but I cant see him setting the world on fire as he is not lightning quick on a regular basis....he just hasnt got the x-factor to be a top tier rider but is probably the best prospect in MGP of any English riders currently on the world stage.

He may do well though as its often hard to deteremine if a rider will adapt to the big bikes or not....the premiere class also need more riders on the grid as the current tally of 17 for the starting lineup is just pathetic. However, I cant help but feel there are half a dozen better prospects around at the moment.

As far as I know Bradl who was heads and shoulders better than Bradley this year hasn't even been offered a spot in Motogp yet.

Go on then, 6 names please?

I don't think there are 6, however Marquez has his path laid out, I love watching Iannone, Corsi and Bradl on their day and I would put the three of them in motogp as well Smith and replace a few of the stagnant crop dusters to liven up the grid.

Smith on his day is as good as them though and if he as engineered a path into motogp then good luck to him.

I know that Bradl is leading but of all the riders there Iannone is one I like to watch and I think he has the right stuff for the bigger bikes.

its a shame bradl won't be able to move up next year but other than him and marquez i really only see iannone and smith as being maybe ready for motogp in 2012

Marquez = path not affected by Smith

Bradl= path affected

Iannone= path affected

Haslam= path affected

Melandri= path affected

Rea= path affected

Davies = path affected

Eslick= not sure if he even wants it, but assume he does, path affected

Herrin= path affected

Young= Same as Eslick

I personally believe everyone of these riders would make better Moto GP riders than Bradley, but ive been wrong before

well of course , if we also look outside moto2 there are even more candidates but i think tech3 really should sign moto2 riders, they did not have a rider from the middle class in a long time
