best sounding bike to date

Another one would be Mercal's YZF it used to blow the front pipes off with its primitive quick shifter, very cool sound.

Honda made some good .... back in the 60's Even their F1 cars had an Earth-shattering snarl.

(These guys are barely getting on it.)

yeah except for the f1 cars made of magnesium which would burn their drivers alive when they caught fire.

a chassis that burns and can't be put out. which ...../careless ....... designed that?

damn geo, that piston is just cute
<

would be a nice necklace

any good sound clips on the rc149?

125cc 4 stroke 5 cylinder engine, unique sound.

they even developed a 50cc triple, i'd love to hear that but couldn't find even a vid

typical honda, try to make as many cylinders as possible

Hahaha, the best way I've ever heard somebody describe the TZ was this way. Imagine 6 industrial grade chainsaws pointed at your face. Now imagine riding that thing?

Excellent description! I can imagine great need for change of shorts.

Re the RA301.

A magnesium engine didn't help, but remember that those guys were ripping around the 'real' Nurburgring (before it had fences) in what were essentially overpowered gas tanks. Any significant off (which was very likely to be into a tree) put you at grave risk of being doused in gas when the thin aluminum tank ruptured.

The bike racers of the day faced similar danger when racing at places like Rouon, Solitude, Hockenheim (before it was neutered) and other godawfully fast, unforgiving roads.

The original Sachsenring was nothing like the current course, it borrowed a little of Monaco and a lot of Spa (again, the old, 'proper' version) and featured a monstrously fast blast through the forest while negotiating the roller-coaster terrain. Dudes like Surtees raced their relatively primitive bikes wheel-to-wheel around courses like this. RESPECT!

This guy's YT channel shows a BUNCH of old tracks. While a 15 year old PC game is not going to render these in anywhere near real-world fidelity, you can still get a feel for these places.

yeah thats kind of my point. given how easily these cars caught fire when they crashed into something its just pure madness to just say "well .... it, we're a long way from protecting these drivers against fire so why not make chassis and engine highly flammable as well. theyre gonna die anyways so who gives a ...."

good post geo, us race fans need a reminder every now and then of how far the sport has come in terms of safety

Did love that V5 990 Honda. Standing five feet away from that when they fired it up off a slave motor was the dogs bollocks old boy

"was the dogs bullocks old boy". Hahaha, what the hell does that mean? Haha. I'll guess it means good. But Jesus, what a visual.

" the dogs bollocks " and " the mutts nuts " and other cannine derived quotes does mean good juNkie

KR 990 was nasty. Had a pit pass at donington 06 (I think). Stood in the garage right behind it as they started it. Was like being punched in the face.

The Cube was cool too. Nothing like a bike that sounds ace, but also wants to burn you alive

Steady Barr......wait, I promise I'll be good now - on my best(ial) behaviour.

Like I said in another thread - the same time as the KR project in fact '06, Casey's LCR Honda V5 was one of the loudest HRC race bikes I have ever heard.

My 1984 Haro BMX with an ace of spades playing card sticking through the spokes on the rear wheel sounded pretty sexy too

Will, do you know your BMX history...why is Haro so important to BMX racing? Know Haro's first name? I bet Mdub knows.
