Ben Spies Update video, post Qatar

great interview
<
loved it. thanks vt!

Great explanation about how to drive the 800gp bike through a corner. Spies amazes me how much he has picked up quickly, the boy is definitely not dumb.

Great interview and good insight. Spies is one hell of a cool cat for doing these after the race.

paraphrasing

When Rossi and Lorenzo comes by I can see what they are doing and I know what they are doing I just can't do it yet. When Stoner comes by I can see what he is doing I just don't know what he is doing, I haven't figured it out. He's doing things on the bike that no one can do.

Spies is a rookie but he's not dumb. Even Hayden hasn't figured out how Stoner can go as fast as he does and he is on the same team. I would go so far as to say no one knows how he is able to go so fast.

Anyway, I think it's awesome how he is so damn confident about going to tracks that he doesn't know. I think at Motegi if he is top 10 it would be a good result but I am expecting a little more.

more of a rhetorical statement on my part, no rumour.

That was a bad sentence. Most rookies make rookie mistakes. Most rookies are too busy just trying to stay on their own bike let alone computing all that is going around them. Spies is an exception. What I was saying is, if a rookie said "I can't figure out what Stoner is doing to go fast", it wouldn't hold any weight cause most would just pass them on as an inexperienced rookie. When Spies says he doesn't know what Stoner is doing but he knows what Rossi and Lorenzo is doing, I think it holds it's weight and should be taken seriously.

Great interview. Even when the questions were insipid, Spies gave substantive
answers. There's enough real information in the interview to spawn three or
four really interesting threads.

Somebody's well meant(as a backwards compliment), but unfortunate choice of words. Ben Spies is both very smart and a great rider - ImO top five AND podiums will be seen this season.

I'm not sure if it matters or not if he does or doesn't understand what they are doing. Bottom line is staying on the bike and being first at the flag and he both understands and knows how to do that. ImO he will become Rossi's biggest and most consistent challenger

He still says he doesn't understand the limit of his bike and tires in the early laps of the race. He needs to figure this out quickly or he will never find himself on the podium. On the other hand, Stoner, who is no rookie, still appears to be struggling with this concept. Lorenzo looks to have figured it out and Rossi appears to know exactly how hard he can push in the early stages. Rossi and Lorenzo also have great closing laps which Spies is confident he can possibly match.

"Insipid" would be paying that guy a compliment!  Those were the lamest, most flatly delivered, IQ-40 questions I've heard in a long while!

Thread 1

WTF is up at Team <strike>Pramac</strike> Peckerhead?  Has some weird culture of entitlement taken root?  Is it something in the water?  How else to explain why both riders, Asparagus and Kalliokaze, are absolute jerks?

The thing that impresses me the most about Spies is the way he seems to be really 'riding' the bike, there isn't a hint of intimidation about his body language and you can tell he's pushing. It's entertaining but he also seems to be one of those guys who makes you feel he's gonna get it right. Watching some riders (Like Barbera, for example) as they brake and head into a turn i'm always left wondering if they might crash of how wide they will go, does anyone know what i mean? It's like the difference between watching Smith and Espargaro go into a turn on their 125's

I agree. He impressed me with the way he attacked right from the get go. Like you said no one was going to intimidate him. He is a very cerebral rider thats going to get him a long way.
