Daytona this weekend. FP1 & 2 done. First quals today.

(Going to do this thread like the SX, one thread for the season since we only have a few people who follow motorcycle racing on powerslide.)

So, this is "America's great race" supposed "most historic and storied motorcycle race" at "Datytona--the world center of racing"; YET, we won't be getting the race live here in the States, actually .  They will in the United Kingdom and abroad. .....  I'm pretty sure we are on the cusp of the end of this empire.  Embarrassing.

Go Benito!

sorry for the noob question, but what exactly is a daytona sportsbike? supersport rules but 850cc twins?

and why is that the premier category and not the superbikes? banking too much/tyre probs?and why isn't hayes on a proper bike in a bigger championship?

thx for the info guys

Daytona Sportbike class is a modified 600cc class.

Superbikes got to be too fast for the standard course, so they created a modified course that cut out NASCAR turns 1 and 2.

Superbike is no longer the premier class because AMA sold out to the NASCAR people, basically.

I think Hayes is overlooked because of his age.

so the superbikes run a different configuration of the course as a support race?

i don't watch a lot of ama/bsb and i dont follow it on purpose so that i have something to watch in the winter, but hayes is the guy that definately looks like the class of the field. also wsbk looks a bit wrong with not a single american in it,yamaha italia should hire him and return.

i remember some moaning 4-5 years ago about nascar, but what exactly happened? you know,in like 3 sentences ;) are the sportsbikes the main event at other races too?would seem ridicolous.

thx a lot

Exactly!

Ok, I missed qual on the livestream because I'm a complete ........  Funny thing was, Rog was watching the live stream while we texted eachother and I didn't know he was watching while I was staring at a live timing screen.  FML

THEN... I knew we could watch the supersport races on Speed2.com, but last year I tried signing up and it didn't let me because my satellite provider was not on the list.  So I didn't bother, until I decided to look a little bit more into it.  Realized they added my provide and I can now log in.  Of course I logged in exactly when the race was over!  So it been a ....... FAIL for me today.

To make matters worse, Benny Solis had an awful qual.  12th.  Then a red flag came out.  Rog said it might have been him as there seems to be fluid on the track and it looked like maybe he blew an engine.  Not sure, but I'm looking for an update from Benny to get the word.

You can log on to amaproracing.com, and go to the streaming link (Pigeon provided link above http://www.amaprolive.com/rr/), you can HEAR the on track PA commentators.  You can also view the Press Conferences as well.

So there are several options.  EXCEPT no LIVE television viewing.  Embarrassing.  Maybe one of you Brits can open a justintv livestream hahaha.  Pigeon, if you can find a live link for us AMERICANS to watch the great AMERICAN race, that would be tops.

Ok, we just had two races today, the HD & supersport.  Both were total barn burners.  In the HD race the first 10 finishers were within LESS than 1 SEC!  Yes, that's right.  In Supersport, the top 6 were within one SEC.  Awesome.  Congrats to the winners.  Stefano Mesa is a good kid.  I've met him, hes good friends with Benny.  Now the rest of the podiums was a bit weird as the first timing showed the both Sedowski brothers, then later they changed it.  I hate that AMA always seems to .... these official timing and scoring finishes up.  They did in SX and now in SS.  Stupid.

Superbike race about to start.

Remember last year when we were at the track and my mates were watching it live back home...I couldn't believe they were seeing it before you Yanks !

Put a bit more salt on it bro...

Ok, so races today were probably very exciting, I don't know, all I could do was stare at a timing chart.  But according to the lap times and gaps, it was close racing all the way.  HD XR1200 race the top ten were within a sec.  The SS was awesome, I imagine, top 6 riders within a sec.  Will have to watch when they post the SS torrent or on demand on Speed2.  The Supebike race seemed exciting to, again, based on my imagination.  Hayes had a mechanical, gifting lead to Herrin.   I thought it was over, then Cardenas made a race of it.  I texted my buddy who knows I dislike Cardenas, that if he beat Herin, I would stop hating on him.  He failed.  So .... Cardenass.  And no, I'm not a fan of Herrin either.  Last thought for today, its a shame Hayes isn't picked up by some Euro team for Wsbk.  He would do great.  Also, KTMDucati is a cool looking bike but not up to snuff.  Benny also had a .... qual.

Tires were coming unglued because of the forces created in the 30+ degree banking.  They decided to make 600s the main event, because the class was given the name "Daytona" sportbike (yes, the lamest name in the history of sport).  The name is in reference to the Nascar group that bought the promotion rights, think the Dorna counterpart called,  Daytona Motorsport Group (DMG).  So to answer you question, yes, the superbike is the defacto support class.

Agree, some team in Wsbk should have thrown a bunch of money at Hayes.  Stupid really, considering they have made so much efforts to break into the US market (by first going to Laguna, then Miller Motorsports park in Utah, and now back to Laguna).  No Americans, that is pathetic.  Ok, so Hayes is "old".  What the .... does this mean if the guy is good?  So he won't be around for 100 more years, big ....... deal.  How many snot nosed kids do these teams go after only to not pan out?

so dmg owns the jumped up supersport category and thats why they promote it over the sbks?how can that be, they must be aware that sbk should be the much bigger draw for them. people generally want to see the top guys on the big and fast bikes and regard that as the pinnacle, not the 2nd league on screaming little inline 4s.

Benny is cursed at Daytona. Gutted for him.

Congrats to Cam.  Well Done.

How does a Ducati 848 compete in the Daytona 200, is it ballast?

Thought it was going to be a good race when seven riders were at the front but Beaubier ran away.  Think the two gals did well to get in the top 10. Mossey, Stapleford, Burrell didn't have bad races seeing as how it would be a new track.  Hornee Jeans hey?

DMG owns the entire series, but Daytona Sportbike follows their sanctioning 'philosophy' of minimizing costs and eliminating direct manufacturer involvement. Long story short, the bikes are performance balanced, much like Grand Am competition. They give the teams a list of allowable modifications and then DMG adjusts the minimum weight and the revs until the bikes are more or less equal. This is considerably cheaper than creating a sophisticated rulebook and requiring all manufacturers to tune to equality (WSS, SBK)

Anyway, nice racing this weekend. Cam owned the Daytona 200, and I hope his talent continues to develop b/c he's a great talent. Also happy for Gerloff who scored 2nd after spending last season recovering from a broken leg. Sad to see Josh double DNF in SBK, but it will make the series a bit more interesting. Cardenas has got his head screwed on straight (at last), and I'm happy to see him get the Yosh ride he deserves.

Agree with your assessment Lex but I was a disappointed in seeing a 200 so spread out at the halfway mark. Usually its a toss up until the last lap. I cant recall such an uneventfull 200.

I think Benny should change his name. Its clear that roadracers named Ben are cursed
