Bagnaia down in FP2, what did he pick up/carry away from the gravel trap? Looked like some debris from the bike but he seemed very protective of it.

Update: Back in the pits it looked like just a handful of gravel. Superstition?

Update 2:

Conditions already proved tricky before that, as factory Ducati rider Bagnaia crashed suddenly at the Turn 3 right-hander just seconds after he’d gone fastest with a 1m51.789s.

Bagnaia walked away from the spill but was caught picking up a handful of gravel and delivering it to Ducati boss Davide Tardozzi upon returning to the pits.

Tardozzi later confirmed that Bagnaia will take the stones to this evening’s rider safety commission, with the size of the gravel at Portimao – and the safety problems this causes – an issue raised in the past.

Rain slop in Portimao. Eight riders didn't even make 10 laps in FP2, due to the conditions.

Could be an interesting race though. Bad conditions today and tomorrow, but dry on Sunday. Could be anyone's race. Aprilia said at Argentina that shortened practice time benefits them because the bike has a stable base setting.

We'll see.

What it must be to ride that track....even at my snail's pace. They did a lap onboard with Rins in FP1 and my stomach was in my throat. T-15 is incredible and then down the hill into T-1. Wow.

That was an eventful quali in both sessions. Those big high sides looked bad, hope everybody is ok. Miller looks good overall, so does Marquez. Good to see Zarco on pole.

Will be an interesting race, hope it stays dry.

It’s an awesome track!

Tough session for the riders. Terrible conditions, but they need to push to improve their starting grid position, in case they get the settings wrong for tomorrow's race.

Glad Marquez somehow escaped injury. Seems like he is not able to ride within the limits of the bike. Admirable, but also not great for his health.

Will be interesting to see how Mir performs with that front row start.

Yea, that whole front row is interesting. Can Zarco get the hole shot and break away? Can Aleix hang in there? I hope so. Then there is Jack and Fabio. Should be entertaining. Marc took a good thump to his head when he high-sided. Hope that doesn't lead to any problems.

Yeah tomorrow will be nuts. Zero practice time in the dry. No rubber on the track. Cool temperatures and a track already considered to be low grip.

Mir isn't a bad bet for tomorrow, but Suzuki has a weird problem apparently. The bike is easy on the tires, but they can't gain pace by using the tires more aggressively. It will always be coming from behind, but if everybody misses their setup, Suzuki could be really strong.

Pecco appears to be a victim of whatever weird thing happens to an Italian when they get hired by the factory team. If I were Bastianini, I'd run for it. They sent poor Melandri to a shrink!

Jack could be a good bet for tomorrow. His head is in the right place. He's comfortable on the bike in most conditions. We'll see.

The fun part will be watching Rins and several Ducatis fight their way through the backmarkers to save a few points. Gonna be insane.

Will be dramatic in some fashion for sure.

MM was threatening for pole on that last lap when the yellow came out in Q2, so he can’t be feeling too bad from the thumping.

After almost an entire generation of racing with very few high sides, it is really disconcerting to see so many riders flying over the top.

WTF? Somebody has got to get to figuring that out.

It might have low grip right now but I really love this track.

It’s fun to see Jack trying to give Pecco a pep talk.

It doesn’t seem to work.

Did he out Lorenzo, Lorenzo?
Very good ride [emoji41]

The new Honda tested well hey?
How's that proceeding so far? [emoji6]

This is what I was thinking the whole race. Great job by Fabio.

That tire gamble obviously didn’t pay off.

I thought that was another measured ride from Aleix, good performance. Zarco kept his cool

Miller……not helping his precarious tenure at Ducati.

Awesome ride from Rins.

Marquez missing a step? Or Honda just missed the setup and gambled on the wrong tire?

Great start to the Euro campaign.

Missed opportunity and cruel luck for Suzuki. They were leading the teams championship coming into Portimao. Both Rins and Mir had the pace for the podium, or at least the top 5. They could have extended their lead considerably, but Mir got torpedoed, and Rins wasted his pace fighting through the field. Tough weekend for Suzuki. Feel badly for Mir, he deserved better.

Quartararo rode a peerless race. Looked like Lorenzo circa 2010. I guess they got the rear grip issue sorted or maybe the conditions suited the M1. Dovi and Morbidelli still incapable of achieving anything, though. Starting to look like Ducati 2007.

Zarco had an excellent ride. Aleix did well. Pecco salvaged something from this disastrous weekend. Mir was riding great before he was wiped out. Olivera overachieved on the KTM.

Vinales was nowhere after teasing podium pace. I guess he meant for Aleix? Morbidelli is driving down the value of the entire Yamaha organization, and Dovi is helping. Yamaha needs to ditch them both.

Franky shouldn’t have cut his hair off. He lost all his mojo when he did that.

I wonder if Morbidelli has an untold confidence problem after that huge injury of his? hasn't been the same really.

I enjoyed the Quartararo show, but the race lost some of its lustre with .......' bowling session. Honda's new bike is looking stiff and slow, appearing to have nullified Marc's strengths while giving none to Pol and yet the bike still looks like it could end careers at any given moment. I wonder if some new bike parts can make it competitive again, it's shocking that Aprilia and KTM are looking like better packages so far.

Despite how much he loves to complain about the bike, it's looking like another easy championship for Quartararo. Everyone else is way too inconsistent except for the older Espargaró (who won't hold) and Rins, who needs to get wins and the qualifying issues sorted to be a real challenger IMO.

Also I ask myself if Ducati is stretching themselves too thin with 8 bikes in the field. Yes, there's always one of them in the podium, but rarely the same faces.
