Might be the first round where there appears to be no decisive winner in the works. All the major manufacturers are in the running for this one. Can Lorenzo make it three in a row or will Marquez reassert himself in the victory circle? I actually think Yamaha could make a good showing here depending on what the temperatures are. Not sure the nature of the circuit will help the Ducati's out at all.

Possible race winners are:

Marquez
Lorenzo
Rossi
Vinales

I leave Dovizioso out because I don't think he has it for this circuit.

Hey ..........are you getting lonely over here in your thread for one?...there you go ...now there's two of us .

I reckon it'll be between Rossi and Marquez - and maybe Mav and Zarco too.

I don't think Ducati are good enough at Assen.

This is Rossi’s best shot at a win this year.

Agreed, I think he should be near or at the top of the time sheets for all of the FP sessions. Vinales is talking a big game but I'm having trouble seeing him do much of anything. Could be wrong though. That bike is in his head and I don't feel Assen is a circuit to have doubts about your bike.

Also it is looking like it will be warm and the current batch of michelins didn't seem to work that well for yam when the temperature got up at the last round.

I think it's too early to say tbh. Rossi has managed the bike far better than vinales in the heat. So I look at it as a case of what sort of Michelin tires show up at Assen. They change every round so it's possible Yamaha might get something a little more favorable this time around.

Ah, thanks for that. I wasn't sure as to how far off the current batch of tires they would deviate from race to race. By that I mean, in my minds eye, Michelin have a current line of tires that seem to be giving people problems and whilst they may change from meeting to meeting, would those changes be negligible and the tires still maintain their problematic core characteristics?

Like you said though, it is too early to tell and we will find out soon enough and you're right, Vale is doing a much better job than Mav', not just in the heat, but everywhere.

My opinion is Michelin ..... with their tires. There have been far too many riders who talked about the inconsistency of their tires. It's kind of like what Pirelli was doing in F1, making inconsistent tires to spice up the show. The poor front tire Michelin makes strikes me as being along the same lines. The rear by all accounts has good grip, the front doesn't. This all falls under Dorna's goal of tightening up the field as much as possible with spec electronics and questionable tire construct that favors different riders at different times. Downside is it favors those with the most money to spend; HRC. They can afford to spend millions for those precious tenths of a second. That's just my tangent though.

I think the Ducati stint actually helped Rossi with regards to riding bikes under less than ideal circumstances, which Vinales has not had to do and it's gotten into his head obviously. Who knows maybe he'll surprise this weekend. This is definitely Yamahas best chance to win a race up to this point in the season, so it's just can they capitalize on it.

Thoughts from Marquez...

Reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez is unsure who will emerge as his chief rival for the title this season.

MotoGP: Marquez: Up to six riders have some chance of title

Marc Marquez says it is ‘impossible’ for him to focus on any one rider as his chief threat this season as he targets a fifth MotoGP world title.

The Repsol Honda rider leads Valentino Rossi by 27 points going into this weekend’s eighth round of the series at Assen in the Netherlands, but Marquez believes up to six riders remain in with a chance of throwing down a challenge.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso began the year strongly but uncharacteristic mistakes, including a DNF last time out at Catalunya, have saw the Italian slip to eighth behind team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, who has won the last two races.

As well as Rossi, Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales and Tech 3 rider Johann Zarco are high on the championship leaderboard in third and fourth places respectively, leaving Marquez unsure over who will prove to be his main challenger as the season unfolds.

“Now it’s impossible because for me, the top five or six riders have some chance to win the championship because there are many points, many races and many different situations in front,” he said.

“But of course it looks like Yamaha riders are there, second third and fourth; Valentino is second and normally in this race track Yamaha is very fast but we will see this year. We improved this year, also Ducati is in a very good way, a good level, so we will try to defend and try to be in the fight for the victory.”

“I’m already convinced about the team, of the bike, about myself that we are good in every circuit. We started the weekend with the mentality to fight for the victory but we will see where we arrive – it’s like we speak every Thursday: until you put the tyres on the circuit you don’t know how it will work or how will be the weekend,” he said.

“But anyway we already show that we were fast in Jerez, Le Mans, Mugello, Montmelo – different kinds of circuits and conditions. Here we expect to be competitive too.”

Marquez finished second behind Lorenzo at Catalunya to increase his title lead over Rossi, who completed the top three, on a good weekend for the factory Honda rider.

“Montmelo overall was a great weekend because we increased our advantage in the championship, which is the most important,” Marquez said.

“Then in the Monday test we did a few steps and we will try to analyse more here if it is a good step or maybe we just try to reconfirm in another race track.

“Apart of that, Assen is another race track that is a circuit that I like, especially T4 is really nice and the last part of the circuit. I enjoy it a lot and maybe it is not one of the best circuits like Austin or Sachsenring for example, but I’m quite constant here every year, I’m able to ride well, to find a good rhythm and we hope this year to continue the same progression and try to be on the podium.

“Anyway we will see and it looks like it will be sunny with a good temperature and this can change a lot.”

High of 70 and sunny, track temps would probably be 95-100 which really isn’t that high. It’s actually around perfect. If that’s outside the Yamaha window, they do have problems
