Doesn't seem that long ago, but 21 years is a long time in racing.
People talk about the 800's being pocket bikes. The 500's look even smaller to me now looking at them.

possibly due to the size of the men who rode the 500s, compared with the pre-pubescent boy sized riders we get on the 800s now?
