Ok so no MotoGP this weekend, but the Cathedral of Speed is having a WSBK race. Assen is on, falling ash will not stop WSBK. Last year Spies won race 1, wowing the crowds with a last lap pass on both Haslam and Haga, but then fell in race 2. Haga took 2nd in race 1 and won race 2. Haslam had a double podium last year with a 3rd and a 2nd. Smrz had a rare podium at Assen last year. Biaggi managed 5th in race 1 and retired in race 2. This year Haslam has to be the favorite, he has been on the podium in every race but 1 this year. Biaggi has also podiumed in the last four races. Checa and Haga had strong finishes in the last round and should be running near the front at Assen.

My predictions:

Race 1
1. Haslam
2. Haga
3. Biaggi
4. Checa
5. Corser

Race 2
1. Haga
2. Haslam
3. Checa
4. Biaggi
5. Rea

As a side note, the WSS races at Assen over the past few years have been excellent. Let's hope this year doesn't disappoint.

Might have been the best race of the year. The side by side with Haslam for 4 straight corners to take 2nd was ....... awesome. It all didnt happen on the last lap but who cares. The pass of Haslam , then the way he scared Haga out of his seat when passed where no man had gone before, took me back to the duel that Bayliss and Edwards had on the last lap of the last race for the WSBK title. Good Stuff

Yoshimura Suzuki forced to abandon Assen WSBK debut
World Superbike Championship newcomer Yoshimura Suzuki has been forced to abandon its planned debut at Assen in the Netherlands this weekend due to the ongoing disruption caused by the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull last week - and is now considering a possible bow at Monza instead
The Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team has become the latest casualty of the ongoing global fall-out from the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull last week – having admitted defeat in its efforts to get to Assen for what was supposed to have been its World Superbike Championship debut this coming weekend.

Late last year, the illustrious and highly-regarded Japanese parts and tuning company announced its intention to quit the All-Japan Superbike Championship – in which it was a regular front-runner – in favour of racing in selected rounds of WSBK this year as a satellite Suzuki operation, no doubt encouraged by the incredible success achieved by its US arm in AMA road racing of late, most notably with Ben Spies.

Aside from Assen, the team revealed that it planned to enter the Imola and Magny-Cours rounds in September and October respectively – ahead of a mooted all-out title challenge in 2011 – with four-time WSBK race-winner Yukio Kagayama aboard the GSX-R1000 in Holland and France, and Daisaku Sakai taking to the track in San Marino, after finishing as runner-up on home turf in the All-Japan Superbike Championship for Yoshimura last season.

However, as a result of the international travel chaos that has reigned for the past week, the squad has proven unable to transport its equipment to the Netherlands in time to compete this weekend, and is now understood to be eyeing a potential maiden appearance at Monza in Italy on 9 May instead.

Who will ride the bike, though, remains unclear, as Kagayama's British Superbike Championship Worx Crescent Suzuki team manager Jack Valentine previously told Crash.net that 'with the investment we have in Yukio, I would not foresee his BSB contract allowing any further races for Yoshimura' [see separate story

Yoshimura was planning on racing at Assen, I haven't heard of this until now? Interesting stuff. Honestly would be cool to see Tommy Hill back in WSBK on the Yosh Suzuki, but as pointed out Team Manager Valentine is unlikely to let Kaga go, for sure he won't let his title front runner Hill out for little spin. Suzuki is having a great year so far in Superbike competition, would be great to have more Zook's in WSBK.

I think its going to be really good for Tommy to get a year of running at the front in a stable situations, fighting for wins and hopefully staying healthy. After that he should look to get back onto the world scene.

Wow!  Excellent! What are they thinking?  That looks like a PROPER corner!  I can't EVER recall a track's layout being improved in this manner; usually they are installing some chicken-.... chicane to slow 'dangerous' sections like this.  You're sure the green doesn't represent the OLD section?

+1...and I would not mind if Vermi would get into the top5. Hey, it´s just positive thinking!

Nice going Haga! For a second i thought you weren't gonna be the last Ducati, but in the end you came through great being the last Duc in the timing sheets.

Smrz, putting in another one of his one-off fast weekends? I had a feeling Corser is going to go well at Assen, top 5 I hope. Rea, Haslam, Checa, Crutchlow all looking good so far. What the hell is up with Haga, I hope it's just a little problem they can get sorted before Superpole. Camier is quicker then Biaggi at this point. Oh well, everything will change tomorrow at the next practice and Superpole.

Wow, the back section is going to be hella fast now. I can't wait to see the difference.
