From other sites;

Effenbert Liberty Racing has confirmed that its rider Brett McCormick has suffered a series of serious injuries as a consequence of his accident during the second World Superbike race of the day at Assen.

The Canadian racer, competing in only his second WSBK meeting, was running a strong 11th when he crashed heavily on lap nine in an accident that has resulted in spine, face, eye and hand injuries.

Further checks revealed fractures to his fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae, albeit without neurological consequence. He will now be transferred to Groningen Hospital for further examination.

The full statement from Effenbert Liberty Racing:

“The Effenbert Liberty Racing Team announces that Brett McCormick, following the disastrous crash in race two this afternoon in Assen, after the control in the circuit medical center, has suffered the trauma of the cervical spine, facial trauma with a hematoma to the eye sockets as well as a fracture of the fifth finger of his right hand, and he was sent to Assen hospital for further evaluation.

“The result of more checks carried out that there was a fracture to the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae, apparently without neurological involvement, so Brett has been transferred in the Groningen' hospital, where it will decide how to stabilize the injuries.

“Further updates will follow as soon as possible.”

Former Canadian Superbike Champion McCormick made his WSBK debut at Imola riding a fourth Effenbert Liberty Ducati 1098R.

Unpredictable conditions really shook up the title race. Now Checa will be down a point, heading into the Monza round.

Didn't see the McCormick incident in Race 2. Was it caught on camera? I could see it going either way b/c Checa is known to mug people on occasion (Neukirchner) and McCormick is known for racing a bit over the line. In any event, I hope Brett gets well soon. The eye injury sounds the most worrying, ATM.

Does not show the start, just the end and it is a hard fall

Turns out it was a loose clip on a radiator hose as he was spewing water and not oil (so I have read and later on board footage did not look like oil, nor the fact that any rider fell).

I don't believe it , it just a loose clip on a radiator hose? What are those mechanics doing....I thought he is gonna win race 1....

Not a great view of the McCormick/Checa incident... astroturf past the rumble strip was quite wet. Gutted for the boy though. Hope things are as reported now and all recoverable. My thoughts are with him.

Not really Checa's fault. There seems to have been lots of room, but he also didn't have to pull such a move being a lap down. That crash looked really nasty. Hope Brett recovers fully. Having watched him for a few years at the local tracks in the Canadian Superbike championship (if you can call it that) I was really excited to watch him in WSBK.

Thanks for all the well wishes everybody!

Brett is sleeping comfortably and will be assesed tomorrow, to see if surgery is necessay to stabilize his C5.

Other than that a broken thumb and assorted bruises etc (two black eyes).

He was lucky and will be making a full and speedy recovery.

I would like to thank Shoei and Alpinestars for doing an awesome job and keeping this from being much worse.

Have to add how unbelievably supportive the Effenbert-Liberty team has been, feels like family. The best.

And a huge thank you to all the track side & medical centre staff for their time & attention to Brett following his crash.

Grant.

Tis true. A 5op 25cent clip gave on a radiator hose.

I have to ask how do you see something failing in the future?

Do you have a crystal ball?

Tis no one to blame, a part went and thats that, Happens in life evey day

I was on my feet to see Sikes leading the race, I think it is lap 12 or something , suddenly a big smoke coming out from the exhaust and Melandry gave the hand signal , then rain came... so it was the end for Sikes...

Yeah , sometimes you just out of lucks...

Me too, I also thought it to be smoke or oil but the lack of riders behind falling tended to suggest water or steam.

Must have been hairy for Melandri seeing the steam not knowing what it was.

Really good to hear! Looked ugly. Hopefully the C5 vertebrae is not an bigger issue than it sounds at this point.

Not really Checa's fault. There seems to have been lots of room, but he also didn't have to pull such a move being a lap down.

Wondering how much more noise we'd be hearing if the roles had been reversed and the inexperienced 20 year old, a lap down, had made a manoeuvre which resulted in the championship leader splatting down hard enough to cause serious injury... I'm NOT blaming Carlos at all, it was ultimately Brett's own fault, but I believe that if the shoe were on the other foot we'd be hearing a lot more bitching about the incident.

Was screaming at the TV for Leon to slow down. Absolutely gutted.

Separated at birth! I was doing exactly the same an ocean apart. SLOW THE .... DOWN! Threw away a win easily. No but seriously, I want to tell every racer in the world, when the guy next to you crashes, and if you got a gap on everybody else by several seconds and keep lapping substantially faster than the pack while its RAINING ....YOU'RE GOING TO ....... CRASH!!!
