During the Catalunya weekend, Nick Harris made an interesting comment. When Bautista's bike broke, Harris first thought Bautista had crashed. When he learned otherwise, he said something to the effect of "he'll be glad to keep his hands in his pockets instead of pulling out his checkbook again".

How does that typically work? Does a rider get X number of freebies, then he has to start paying? Is this fairly universal, or only in the teams of lesser means (non-factory)?

I am sure it varies from team to team, I have worked in professional motor sports most of my life (AMA, Indy car, ALMS, Grand Am, and even nascar) very few riders/drivers get a 100% free ride, they can negotiate that with their team. I have also seen tracks bill drivers for damage to the track.

Maybe he meant Lucio Cecchinello's checkbook rather than Bautista's? That bike is worth over a million euros, I doubt Bautista could afford to replace it if he completely destroyed it. A system where riders had to underwrite the cost of crashing wouldn't exactly engender fiercely committed riding either.
