Whats Up with the Foot down

Im sure every one has noticed that more and more racers in Moto gp are starting to put their foot down every time they are going into a turn. I remeber the first one to do this was Rossi, now more guys are doing it. To me it looks dangerous, being that these guys are the best in the world so theyre must be something to it, but i wouldn't try it. I dont remember seeing any of the SBK guys do it either. i heard the commentator on sunday mention something about it helping them feel better breaking. To me it seems like if they go down with their foot out like that, their leg is going to snap in 2 They should put a "dont try this at home" warning before some dumb kid somewhere ends hurting himself trying to be like Rossi

I'm not quite sure what it achieves, other than shifting some extra weight over, but the Super Moto lads all do it going round corners, I think they call it "backing it in"

Yeh ive noticed so many riders are trying it....kind of annoying cuz that was Rossi's thing for awhile. He says it just feels better under hard breaking. I no its not the same but when i lock up my back tire just messing around on my KTM it feels better with my left leg out just for balance and i started doing it almost out of instinct. I no Rossi barely if at all uses the back brake...but maybe its sort of the same concept?

By KTM im sure you mean dirt or supermoto not a sport bike. on dirt and supermoto bikes its more comftrable to stick your foot out, but not on sport bikes

yeh i mean dirt bike....thats y i was sayin maybe its kind of the same concept. Either way it must work its gaining popularity amongst the riders

Its to off set weight. like hanging off the bike or knee down but this is quicker and more precise. plus it helps should the front start to wash out.

i personally feel more comftrable with my knee rather than my whole leg

I noticed Dani doing it occasionally in 250 at about the same time that Vale started doing it during his battles with Sete - couldn't say who was first, it was far less frequent then. Toby and Julian used to refer to it as the stress meter.

Saw an article about it some days ago in a british mag. Rossi commented that he should have a dollar from each who did it after him

None of them can give a very good discription but it feels better. Btw, don't confuse this with dirt bike/super moto, puting your leg forward, thats a differnt thing.

First, Rossi didn't invent it.

Basically, it helps riders find the widest possible entry point and the fastest line with the least lean angle. This line allows for earlier apexing than a more inside line. Taking a tighter line mean more lean angle, which is unfavorable when the front is already loaded heavily. Getting directional momentum setup for that out-to-in line can be difficult under heavy braking because the bike's directional momentum is more sensitive to lean angles the slower you go (ie. on the brakes). Relieving the inside peg pressure helps with balance and precise lean in point. If Rossi is making a left, the right is weighted, keeping him more upright until he's ready to drop in. It possible to apex too early (inside rumble strip) without good entry setup.

Generally on corner entry there are distinct braking, lean in, and throttle points. When putting corners together, riders will often stand up the bike briefly, then re-lean into the next corner. This helps redirect momentum toward the forward line (otherwise you'd carry too much directional momentum from previous exit). When the leg 'dangles' the bike is always aready stood up. At the lean in point the leg goes back up, maximizing turning radius for early apex drive.

I personally don't brake smooth or hard enough to take such lines, and usually brake earlier taking a tighter, slower inside line and apexing/throttling later.

i dont think it is. its a way of putting some weight over to stabilize under heavy breaking, especially when the rear goes light and starts to go wide. its just more obvious on dirt/tard bikes.

because they do it when going in to a corner 'hot' I think it might help counteract the gyroscopic effect of the wheels to help turn in

i do know it's .... all to do with stress tho !!

leg up and forward on a MXer is more about self preservation than stability. you want the bike to be "fidgety" at a corner, this helps get it around the corner quicker. leaving your foot on the peg will only get it broken as you go through the ruts.. if you watch dirt racers, you see that they can slide forward enough to not need even more weight on the front. that just leads to loss of traction/drive at the rear. the back end stepping out is controlled to some degree by weighting the outside peg and using that leg to try and force the bike back in line.
motards are IMO a natural extension of this style but it offers no real performance advantage to knee out.

Rossi IMO does it because it feels comfortable to him. i cant see any advantage to doing it but all the riders seem to think that its one of the doctors secrets...

i used to ride supermoto and i put foot froward to help tip the bike in. being quite a high bike i need to get some weight out to help with lean angle plus the self preservation part with the front washing out but that was more for the dirt sections not tarmac.

Its no way close t a MX or supermoto leg its more of a dangle but i didnt see him do it in the last few corners when he got jorge in Barcelona
