Actually Nicky is the 2006 champion, and now technically the former MotoGP champion (WAS), for the obvious reason that he did not successfully defend the title against Casey.
Casey now has the honour of being the current MotoGP Champion (IS).
The only reason Hayden rides with number 1 for the rest of the season is because he started with it, and only he could have that number in 2007, even though he lost the title officially to Casey back in Japan.
Even the commentators now refer to Nicky as the former champion.
