the points system

since nicky hayden won the world championship i have read countless debates on weather or not he deserved it because he only won 2 races ect, to be honest i can see both sides of the arguement.
so my question is,,is the current points system fit for purpose ?
should there be more than a 5 point gap between 1st and 2nd place ?
should points be awarded for things like pole posision ?

my points system would go
1st 30pts
2nd 20pts
3rd 15pts
4th 10pts
5th 8pts
6th 7pts
7th 6pts
8th 5pts
9th 4pts
10th 3pts
11th 2 pts
12th 1pts

pole 5pts
lap record 3 pts
best victory celebration 50 pts.............only joking

how would you do it or would you keep it as it is.??

does anyone have the patience to work out what last year's final points would have been on that system?
Come on Rog...your idea...

i alway's liked the idea of some point's for pole position. they do it in the ama. 1 for fastest lap of the race i could live with too. it would add a little i think. but leave the rest alone.

well im not in the google gang so fount this quite hard to work out.
for race points i worked it out at.
rossi 280 pts
hayden 239 pts
capi 216.
this is where it got tricky. if i remember correctly rossi got 5 poles so that would be another 25 pts nicky got 2 poles ? 10 pts as for fastest laps im buggered if i can find that info out,

Since the pole position is so very important and race in and of itself certainly it would benefit the fastest racers. Since those that obtain the pole position often finish on the podium it would benefit those that prove they are indeed fastest.

Paying points for lead laps is to Nascrapish but would give hard chargers to go all out and benefit even if they fall off.

Don't be scared. Google doesn't bite. If you'd gone to MotoGP.com, you could have found all the info very easily, even those fastest laps!

Applying your points system to the 2006 season is really a moot point. The riders weren't racing under that system, and I think they would all have approached it a bit differently, if that were the case.

In a sport where the first four can be less than half a second apart at the finish (e.g. Germany 2006), a 20 point difference between first and fourth seems a bit harsh. I like the current points system.

The idea of points for pole, is a good one though. How about taking that even further: points for the front row. 3 for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Qualifying has been great this season, imagine the extra tension if there were points on the line...

i like this idea. i've thought about this before. it would defo make qualifying so much more important!

For starters I wouldn't give any points for pole or fastest lap - it's about racing and where a rider finishes in the race. I think the existing system is better. Where the 1st 4 or 5 can be very close together a 20 point difference from 1st to 4th is very hard. It's bad enough be 4th - aka "also raced - didn't make podium" How about only counting podium points for the championship - the rest get forgotten anyway

no it should stay as it is. why is winning every race necessary to get the crown? besides that point system is far too confusing and would make a really borng championship. rossi would always win the crown and that would be really boring. no, the current system is best because it makes the table much closer and exciting. although points for pole position is a good idea.

debatable.

Yeah why should we have a system where the guy who finishes first most often wins, this is madness.

I genuinely believe that we need a shake up in the points system, with more points for race winners. People would surely put on that extra push if it meant a points cushion instead of a safe second.

well in theory yes but the reality would just be a shorter championship imo.

Interesting, why would it make a shorter championship?
