Isn't it also related to his "clinical" moves on the race track?

If this is already been said then sorry.

Rossi's got a doctorate, one, if not the highest form of degree you can get in England.
Well, that's what it would be in England, but I'm not sure about Italy.

So, that's why he had that cartoon.

I think it's somewhere in one of the 'MotoGP Genius' books by Matt Oxley that he says something like "I called myself The Doctor because there are loads of Dr. Rossi's in Italy and I've got the degree to be officially called that"... something along those lines anyway.

Sorry to correct you Lou but he hasn't got a 'doctorate'. What he has is an honorary basic degree the equivalent of which in England would be a Bachelors in Communications. However, in Italy, even a basic degree (laurea) is enough to earn you the title of 'doctor'.

Yeah it's a doctorate in his profession.. I said I don't know what it is in Italy, but you gain the name 'doctor' in your proffession

A doctorate in Motogp racing? Where do we all sign up??
<

I thought it was because anybody who does well in Italy gets called a doctor.

Its abit like in my culture, prominent members of my family get named after famous dictators. Uncle Hitler, Auntie castro, Uncle gobochov etc.
As soon as one of my brothers gives birth, I'll be uncle stalin.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Bikergirl @ Jun 13 2007, 11:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Guy in labcoat and stethoscope not cool? Ha!!! That's why George Clooney's stint on ER reduced him to poverty right? A guy in a labcoat is very cool (and I don't just say this because I've a degree in Chemistry ok???? and for the record...I hate george clooney but that's besides the point...)
Anyway, in Italy anyone with a basic degree (not necessarily a Doctorate) is referred to as 'dottore'. And Rossi was conferred with an honorary degree in communications from the University of Tavullia. Dottor Rossi is a very common name around there
<
And it also refers to an ability to do things extremely well, which I think we all agree Vale does. Admittedly 'the doctor' in the english speaking world does not carry the same connotations as 'il dottore' in the Italian speaking world. But in any case it's his choice. If he's happy with it....

I guess when it comes down to it, it's a matter of opinion. After all, did the labcoat really do it for clooney, or was it the face?
<

Anyway, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Obviously in Italy the idea of a "Doctor" is different to what I'm used to, and it seems to command a lot more respect and admiration. I thought a doctor was someone who spent the first half of thier life in university, and the second half tapping knees and driving porsches.

Does he have an honourary degree or did he actually study for it?

Dunno about the face...like I said..he's not my type.

And yes Vale's degree is honorary. It's a Laurea in Comunicazioni, that is to say a bachelor's in communications. Which I'd say is pretty deserved?
<
His graduation ceremony was on the news here
<

And to the other person who commented...no I'm not Vale's assistant....what would poor Uccio say?!?!?!?
<
I offer assistance to another dude, and I do watch all my racing in Italian. No Toby and Jules and Mamola for me. I get Loris Reggiani and for the post-race comments/interview etc ..Giacomo Agostini on a regular basis!
