Rossi is nicknamed 'the Doctor' due to his ability to cure bike's ailment. When he went to Yamaha from Honda, he turned the then underperforming, underpower and not rideable Yammy into Championship winning bike.

Maybe they should call Burgess "The Doctor" too then.

Hello to all I am only new here on this forum and this is my first post, I come from downtown Maroubra a suburb of Sydney. Cheers to all! Love all the motoGP scene and I very passionate towards good racing be it from the aussies, yanks, poms or whoever! (don’t expect a one sided argument from me)

The reason they call Val the doctor is because in Italy a Dr. lawyer etc are respected people and from an interview with Val’s father that is what he said.

at the time when the riders adopted these nicknames the eurosport comentaters said he was called the doctor because he would examine all the riders and find a cure, i believe he actualy had this nickname before he got an honery degree.

I think he got his 'doctor' title when he won his first 500 title. I don't remember it before that.

I think if you sit back and think about it, it's not a real good nickname for one of the most dominant sportsmen in history. I mean, look at Edward's nickname, it inspires thoughts of fury, wind and speed, and it's also relevant to him because of his Texan origins. Now look at "The Doctor" in comparison... a guy in a labcoat with a stethescope.... not really that cool IMO. I guess it could be a cultural thing, with Doctors being worshipped as demigods in Italy and all that, but I think he could have done much better.

He probably didn't choose that though.

So does anyone else think Rossi needs a new nickname? And not one of them other ones he's got, somthing really cool.

If it was based on what he looks i'd wanna point out that he looks like a gay Steve Mcqueen. I suggest we call him Steve McQueer.

Actually I was being serious. I mean, "The terror from Tavulla is catching up to me!" sounds much better than "The doctor is catching me! Maybe I should take two asprins and call back later".

I never thought about it because in my country when somebody is doing something extremely well (specialist for something) it's common to say he is the doctor for it. I thought it's the same in the rest of the world.

and I think it's very very cool

Richo commented on Edwards nickname "Tornado" I think "puff of wind" would be more accurate as to his impact on MotoGP!!!!!

In Rossi's biography he said his nickname came from Doctors being so highly regarded etc. in Italy. I always thought it was pretty cool and unusual - perfect for Rossi as he is kinda...unusual!

What about Haydens nickname "Trick Daddy" now that is the worst nickname IMO.

Still got that gay naming fetish Tom?

That's exactly the reason people started calling him The Doctor!!

The Doctor sucks, I think he should have a better nickname.

Guy in labcoat and stethoscope not cool? Ha!!! That's why George Clooney's stint on ER reduced him to poverty right? A guy in a labcoat is very cool (and I don't just say this because I've a degree in Chemistry ok???? and for the record...I hate george clooney but that's besides the point...)
Anyway, in Italy anyone with a basic degree (not necessarily a Doctorate) is referred to as 'dottore'. And Rossi was conferred with an honorary degree in communications from the University of Tavullia. Dottor Rossi is a very common name around there
<
And it also refers to an ability to do things extremely well, which I think we all agree Vale does. Admittedly 'the doctor' in the english speaking world does not carry the same connotations as 'il dottore' in the Italian speaking world. But in any case it's his choice. If he's happy with it....
