<{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Crap....
Most of the current GP riders are all bloody good riders, and think they would do OK on the 500's. Most did OK on the 990's and I think the early 990's were as brutal as the 500's.
There was an interview last year with Mick Doohan, where he said he thinks the current riders at the top now are as good as they have ever been in history as far as ability and understanding of what it takes to go fast.
The TC, tyres, and other aids, help the riders go fast, but don't mean they could't ride the 500's or the 990's. Think that no matter what formula you introduced, the same guys would be at the top.
Big part is who has the balls to push to the limit. The same guy would push to the limit on any bike.
Ignorant is a bliss..
The earlier 990 bikes - 2002 to 2004, was with limited electronics, and if not mistaken Yam was still using carburation system..Electronics were more to cut off engine RPM or control over rev. And not to forget, 500 - 2 Stroke is NIL when come to electronic..
When Stoner and Pedrosa moved to MotoGP class in 2006, 990 bikes were already full blown with electronics, TC ,other ..... and fly by wire tecnology which allow rider to open full throttle at lean angle. It 's all done by computer to check lean angle, tires contact and how much power or torque to deliver to the rear tire thus estimate how much to inject fuel into the engine or which piston to sniz..
I could still remember how KR JR Suzi would always had problems to preserve tire for the race distance and the like of Criville , Dazza-Australian King of Sliding, Rossi were good in handling tire wear could win the race .
Of course..
The current racers are good with the 800cc bikes as they are designed specifically for them..No doubt about that..
