Suzuki files for bankruptcy

I think the real tragedy is that Suzuki is one of the foremost authorities on kei cars. We have a demographic of people aged 16-24 who don't buy cars and who barely drive for socio-economic reasons. Seems like the perfect marriage. A segment of disenfranchised motorists, and a car company with nothing to lose in the American market. If Toyota can bring the iQ to market via Scion, Suzuki could have tried something, even with the left/right hand drive differences.

Interesting idea, problem is the FMVSS regulations will trip up any Kei car. A nice barrier to entry because of the unbelted crash tests the US market 'demands'.

I think the leader in 2007 was a bloke called John Howard, not noted for his tendencies towards Labor, with another bloke called Tony Abbott among the senior cabinet members.

I don't necessarily disagree with you about unions, except that the right wing (in union terms) ones seem to be the most corrupt, as with the right wing of the Labor party. The current adverse changes in industrial relations in australia though imo are a direct reaction to John Howard's Workchoices, which was also politically/ideologically motivated; I know for a fact that the head of the Chamber of Commerce at the time described it as a solution in search of a problem. This has led to reforms made by the likes of Hawke and Keating which even the Liberals have said recently were sensible being rolled back. You are a smart guy, surely you don't think only one side engages in politics.

I also don't agree with political debate in australia being led by shock jocks (Michael Smith ex 2UE is mainly leading this Gillard stuff) and the murdoch press, all the while pointing to bias in others with them apparently having no biases or agendas of their own, and the Murdoch press in Australia where they originated apparently being completely ethical as opposed to their offshoots under the same management overseas.

Yes I think Workchoices was a step too far and thought it would cost him at the time. I think everyone would have known someone that had their working conditions rewritten and then told to sign up or be sacked.

Yes I'm not happy with politics on either side at the moment. Tony Abbot is scared to be labelled a woman hater. Gillard appears to be a criminal. I saw something today about the press gallery in Canberra and their allegiances with the Labor factions. This stated that the Labor powerbrokers went to the senior members of the gallery to see if Gillard's shady past would be an issue when they were looking to knife Rudd. They said no and they wouldn't report on it. Now it's becoming a big issue. If gillard has done the wrong thing, she should be charged and go through the normal legal process with the presumption of innocent until proven guilty. It's because of the blind eyes, the secret deals, mystery losses of documents and strangely worded denials followed by man hating rants that it is dragging on and on. Julie Bishop seems to have documents which prove Gillard committed a crime. Charge her, she should step down and then let the courts decide. Either way, she has zero credibility these days.

On the coal seam gas issue, it appears both labor and the liberals are just as bad as each other on this.

Celebrity (car) Deathmatch: iQ vs Escalade

My money's on the Escalade.

An example: My mate in Fla moved somewhere north, always been a Euro car driver, thought he would get himself one of those new-fangled Golf GTs (the diesel one).

Sitting at a yield sign, waiting to turn, the ..... soccer mom in the Escalade forgot to watch the road while she was texting her lunch date and hit him at about 65mph. Result? a four-door Golf GT now resembles an Aixam 300 (google it).

He survived with little other than bumps and cuts, but he now wants an FSJ as his daily driver. To quote 'I need something soccer mom and redneck-proof'

I bought my daughter a Suzuki Alto for her first job, but she was in traffic with other similarly-sized cars. Car-on-car action doesn't resemble Godzilla and the Ant.

At the moment all that has been demonstrated is that Julia Gillard had particularly bad taste in her choice of one boyfriend 20 years ago, as Mike Carlton said this morning and as I said initially in a post on this thread yesterday which I shortened because I didn't think it was of general interest. If this document exists then Ms Bishop should table it in parliament, it apparently wasn't sufficiently convincing for 2UE to back Smith or the Australian to back their columnist on its basis.

My point was that if Gillard is culpable for what someone did with an entity concerning which she gave legal advice at its initiation but gained no benefit from herself which seems to be all that is really being alleged, then by the same argument Julie Bishop is culpable for the legal advice she gave to James Hardie to help them avoid payouts to their employees who were suffering mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure in their employ; she would definitely have known this was James Hardie's intent while there is no reason to believe Julia Gillard had any such knowledge regarding the intentions of Wilson and Blewett.

I think you are downplaying Gillard's knowledge but we'll wait and see. There are supposed to be documents. Who knows ? Anyway probably should get back on topic.

It's just Suzuki America trying to purge its debts the easy way, get a grant and start again.

Is it possible to downplay Gillard's knowledge?

She is ginger and welsh, after all. Seen The Valleys?

Don't go talking sense. Where will that leave us?
