Spies pulls the pin

For those that didnt see the AMA final today,it was basically a winner take all race for the championship.Spies was on pole but Mladin got the hole shot and led the first 14 laps and even at one point put a little over a second on Spies. Then Spies just went off,he put a hard move on Mladin heading into the corkscrew at Laguna and made the pass and over the next 4 laps put 3 seconds between him and Mladin and eventually extended it to over 5 seconds to cruise home to win the title by 1 point. He was so dominant the last 13 laps,i couldnt help but think that he had been toying with Maladin all year, giving him false hopes.

I was a bit suprised because the first half Matt looked real strong and Spies bike was moving around a lot more. I figured he would burn up his tires a lot faster. He definitely dropped the hammer in the last few laps.
Congrats to him.

Strange that he would let Mladin win so many races and go into the last one basically having to win it. I can't see how you can come to this conclusion? Toying with him for the whole year? C'mon, get real.

That was a hell of a move, povol. The way his front end started shaking entering the corkscrew, I thought he was going to crash and take Mladin with him.

Spies did an awesome job to close the one-second gap. I thought it was over when Mat pulled out by a second, but Spies shocked me. Hopefully he can move on to WSBK or Moto GP.

About the supersport race: the commentators never mentioned it, but does anyone else think that Hacking and Hayes touched going into turn 6? I swear I saw Hacking bump Hayes, which sent Hayes flipping through the dirt. I'm not saying Jamie did it on purpose, I'm just surprised at how aggressive he was this time out.

I'm glad for Roger, but at the same time I feel awful for Josh. He lost the super sport points lead through no fault of his own and had a rotten, painful weekend to boot. I'm glad he is going to be okay, though. I was worried when he wasn't moving after the crash in turn 6.

Laguna has not been good to Hayes this year.He lost the points lead back in July at Laguna when him and RLH touched and he went down.Since then,he was the dominant rider and had clawed his way back into
contention only to have a massive highside in practice that screwed up both his feet, then hard that very scary crash yesterday..The crash yesterday didnt seem to be Hackings fault,Josh was making a move for the lead when it looked like his rear came loose and he saved the highside only to lose the front and got slammed hard to the ground at a big speed. It was only fitting that Herrin won this race as he was leading when Hacking punted him out of the way in the corkscrew. That move and the one Cardenas tried at the corkscrew should get them both an ... chewing.Herrin has made huge strides the second half of this season and if he continues to improve is going to be something special. He led at VIR before a mistake cost him that race and led the July Laguna race coming into the last corner of the last lap only to be outsmarted by RLH and lost by a hair.He is now a race winner in what maybe the most competitive bike racing series there is.

Anyone see if Mladin made a comment about the pass Spies made on him in the corkscrew to take over the lead? I could see where he would be pissed, as it seems the lapper guy allowed for the pass. Not a biggie as I'm sure a pass by Spies was inevitable. Mladin never kept up with him on top of that. All in all, great to see it come down to the season closer.

Anyone know where Spies is going to be moving to next year, Moto GP, WSBK? Has Mladin confirmed where he is going to be next year? My prediction, he races the AMA one more time, gets a championship, then retires.

I didnt see anything wrong with the pass.If anything,Mladin's response to the pass might have cost him the race. His counter attack in the middle of the corkscrew was not wise and he lost all momentum and from then on it was all Spies. It looked like in the fraction of a second that Mladin took to size up the lapped rider Spies pounced and it kind of suprised Mladin.I dont think Mladin figured Spies would go 3 wide at the top of the screw and he did.

Spies will be back with Yoshimura next year and GP for 09

I saw the post race interview. Mladin said the pass was inevitable and that Spies was quick on that part of the circuit. Classy response considering he probably wanted this championship more than he led on.

The only other guy to beat him was Nicky. Now Ben has beat him twice.

I'm pretty sure Mladin was at least happy to have a chance to respond to Ben's title. Nicky got the call to the big show after he won his AMA title.

That crap that Mladin has been spewing about the title not meaning anything to him is .........He has always been about titles but i think he knew in the back of his mind that Spies was going to spank him when he needed to.

i think staying in the ama race for next year is a mistake but I guess suzuki dont have room for him to bad, I think probably hurt his development/adjust time to the gp bike/tracks

I don't think VIR was a mistake.
Wasn't that the race when his knee puck came off causing his knee to stick and throw him off balance and run him off the track.

I was impressed with Spies. I thought it was over in the first half of the race. Then, something happened, Spies rode like a mad man. Much gained respect from me. But I still think he’s a ....... ....., or is getting ...... advice from some moron, to stay in the AMA another year. I hope he doesn't do a Mladin and ..... out of ever challenging international talent.

Mladin is a ...... His titles don't mean ..... Anybody who’s ever had a competitive package has beaten him. He doesn’t even have the balls to move to another brand, say Honda or Yamaha to prove that he really is the best. What a farce! We all see through the chicken-.... condescending comments. I’m glad he failed by one point, I think it makes it more painful to his ego, what could have been.

The AMA is a Suzuki cup with Mladin as their posterchild of phony competition. The only way we could see what is what is if they did away with the pseudo contest and made a spec Suzuki for everyone to ride. I’d love to see Mladin’s face when he’d surely come in 5th every race.
