<{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>It's generally agreed that the Yamaha has been the best bike in the motogp paddock for the last couple of years. Spies rode two races (Laguna and Indy) with the POS Suzuki and beat Toseland both times.
They both knew the Laguna track and tyres can't be used as an excuse for Toseland because Dovi, Hayden and DePuniet finished 4th, 5th and 6th on the crappy Michelins at Laguna. Rain tyres also can't be used as an excuse at Indy because Hayden and Lorenzo (on Michelins) finished 2nd and 3rd behind Rossi's Bridgestones.
After what Spies has done this year with a new bike, new team, new tracks and new series I think this is a no brainer. The question is will Ben WANT to go before winning a championship?
Either way, my conclusion: Bye, Bye JT!!
Ben has proven himself as a Superbike rider, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything for GPs. Ben's "problem" is that no Superbike riders have made a really successful crossover of late. Haga, Bayliss, Toseland, Edwards, Byrne, Hodgson, etc. etc. all have had lackluster careers in GP. Hayden has a title, but the inversely undesirable statistic of only 3 victories (4?) and hasn't really been happy since the rule change.
So, it really doesn't matter how good Ben looks right now. Bayliss, Hodgson, Edwards, et al have done much more than Spies at the WSBK level, but none of them got on well in GP. Bayliss even switched to the 211/Michelin package that was the belle of the ball back then and didn't improve.
I'd like to see Spies make the jump (after taking the title?) and see how he does because I believe that a SBK racer
can be a great GP racer. Spies should be cheering for Toseland to do well, because even if Spies takes the title, the general tone of the GP paddock is that SBK riders don't do well in GPs.
Maybe Spies can prove them wrong. It would be interesting to see. In any case, unless his season completely falls apart, he'll likely get offers for a GP ride even if the Yamaha Italia > Tech 3 route doesn't come through.
I think Melandri and Spies will probably be vying for the same seats next season.
