Toseland's place under threat as Tech 3 team boss courts WSB front runner

TECH 3 YAMAHA team supremo Herve Poncharal has said he's keen to have former AMA Superbike champ-turned-WSB front runner Ben Spies in his MotoGP line up for 2010.
Poncharal has been impressed by Spies undoubted riding talent and has openly stated he wants the Texan in next year's Tech 3 team. Speaking on the subject Poncharal said:

"It is obvious that he is an exceptional pilot. I wish to have it in 2010! We had already discussed this with him last year, just like we did with Simoncelli. Ben will be in MotoGP in 2010, it obvious to me and I hope it will be with Tech 3. He will bring new blood to the category. He's part of the Yamaha family."

Poncharal has also been equally outspoken regarding James Toseland's poor performances over the last two years.

"James must roll. There are three Yamahas in the first four in MotoGP. James is sixteenth. He must arrive in Japan with ambitions. It is necessary that he makes the top 10."

crazy early rumour? or do you think this holds water?

We've been hearing these rumors and speculations since Spies first signed with Yamaha. I'm sure Herve would be delighted to have Spies next year, not so sure Spies would be delighted with an offer for a satellite ride. I'm guessing he spends another year in WSBK. But who knows. Really is it silly season time already? Did the season pass by and I missed it?

Surely Spies is merely in the same position as JT was when he was in WSB. No saying Spies would be better than Toseland on a GP bike...

Not even close. Even in 2007, Toseland never dominated weekends like Spies has.

from next year arn't all rookies banned from full factory rides
so it will have to be satellite teams for all peeps like ben ? to get into motogp.
not sure though lol.?

I've heard that the rookie to satellite team rule is only for factories with sat.teams.
He could go to Suzuki...

Irrespective of how good Colin is looking on the bike right now, he is getting old and JT is the only pom, how much sponsorship does each one bring to the table.

I would say it would be American replaces American. JT stays, CE goes…

Also, apropos of nothing else.

I used to be indifferent to Spies, but now I’m sold, he is un-.......-real. The real deal

jazkat - where did you get that quote from Poncharal? Seems strange for him to be saying things like that after spending a season pissing in JT's pocket....

IF Spies makes the move to motogp AND its to Tech 3, i can't see him replacing Edwards.

I guess time will tell though.

Hope the ....... Motegi rain clears up before the race today.

Yep, Spies WILL be a rookie so its satellite team or Suzuki/Hayate for him, whether he "likes it" or not!!!

(nice rule-making)

NO way!!! JT sucks in GP and never seems to get his ... in gear. He has had the chance many times but never makes good on it. I think Herve wants Spies to pair up with Colin since they are both americans and will make a good team. No team manager wants to have the seperation like there is at present. Colin is and has been a better rider in GP than toseland. So why ditch the dude who is better for one that is not as good, especially in the development stages? If age was such an issue than Suzuki would have Spies already this year instead of Capi.

i agree with you, i believe suzuki took on capi as he is a good development rider, same goes for colin amazing development rider and he helps yam out a lot. tech 3 machines are probably the best sattelite bikes on the grid and i think one of them is wasted on JT.

the bbc get so sucked in by him always printing stories saying how JT is going to get back into it and blah blah blah JT this weekend.

i hope he does get back into and prove me wrong but i dont see it happening.

I can understand how The English want JT to do well. It isn't any different than me wanting Hayden to do well. The difference is that at least Nicky won a wc through consistancy. JT has had none since he has been there. Only consistant at being a backmarker or midpacker.

I don't think it's fair to compare the achievements of a guy who's been a couple of years on satellite bike with one who has been his whole (three times longer) career exclusively on official factory teams.

\\hayden has been a consitant midlevel racer for oh about 5 of his 6 years in motogp.... despite being on the best bike for quite a few of those years

ffs motogp isnt the place for you to learn how to ride.. u do that in the lower grades.

unfortunatly Jt has been promoted way too soon, or in his case probably way too late in his career,

unlike many of the 20 year old rookies, JT has shown ZERO progression in the last year and has his ... consistantly being handed to him by his teammate

We are 2 rcaes in and JT is yet to impress this year, i wopuldn't sack him just yet but he need to be looking at being top satellite bike in the title, meaning he has to beat Kallio and Colin. I'd say the Suzukis look to have stepped up this year so he may well fall behind them

Why would Spies leave a factory WSBK team for a satellite ride in motogp. Yes, MotoGP is the pinnacle of two-wheeled racing and features the best riders but when was the last time a satellite rider won a race in motogp?? I think Spies is better of staying put winning races and challenging for the sbk championship. As for JT#52 im a fan but he needs to pull his finger out and get some results........

Off the top of my head probably Biaggi with Honda Pons or Melandri at Honda Gresini...depending on your point of view regarding the level of factory support afforded to them at the time
