I hear motorcycles and scooters are still very popular in Asia, and South America... I also ship a lot of bikes to Mexico. I think the sport needs to look at these places. F1 will have a race next year in Vietnam, that track might be an option for Motogp.

It's the ....... Internet and Smart Phones. We're turning into a nation of do-nothing dweebs. If I HAD to sell bikes - I'd sell Harleys. I hate 'em but there's always gonna be overweight middle-aged dirt farmers, yuppie stock brokers, real estate guys, trailer park managers, high-school teachers and assistant supermarket managers who want to leather-up and play at Hells Angel on the weekend.

I do sell a lot of Harleys, mostly sportsters and some Buells, most of the buyers are guys in their 20s. 15 years ago guys in their 20s were buying sport bikes, but not anymore. I think price point is a big part of the demographic change.

Is it my imagination or have bike prices increased in the last thirty years in ways that are much more a result of the jump in sophistication of the bikes rather than inflation?

I think the manufactures, especially the Japanese, have repositioned where certain bikes sit with regards to the price point, for example jap sport bike prices have almost doubled in the last 15 years or so... However 15 years ago a CBR600 was considered an entry level bike here in the USA. these days many of the manufactures have introduced smaller displacement entry bikes, with a lot of the same technology.
as for the Italians, their price point has remained the same in some cases even come down.
as for Harleys, the market price point is also the same, even though there have been lots of changes in their line up.

Well over here Harleys are popular, mostly chosen by the high earning bankers as a weekend toy But they get some flack with names, combine harvesters, tractors, worlds most expensive paper weight, my brother in law had a 1200 Sport a few years ago, I managed to destroy its exhausts and it was like a jelly at traffic lights.

Personally I love off road bikes, if they have a proper seat.

even here in the US off road bikes are the bulk of the industry, I probably sell 3-1 off road to on road bikes, and when you factor in parts and gear, the off road market is probably 80% of my business.

out of curiosity what do used Harley sportsters sell for in the UK?

Here's a site that gives some wild prices IMO, guess a lot of its down to the extra's that people waste their money on.
Harleys though hold a certain value and they have never been cheap, top of the range is from about £20,000 (will be more if the cretins in Brussels start their ... for tat battle with your government)

Harley actually announced earlier this year that they are moving some manufacturing to Europe to avoid some tariffs... back when I had my shipping container, there was a guy in Germany that wanted to do a deal with me where I would send him USDM Harleys to sell in Europe. The problem was he wanted bikes with low miles, and most Harley riders here put about 10K miles a year on their bikes.

10k is that all!
Lots of riders here will do 20k+, my highest year was 37k and I toured europe for 3 months, that was in 1989 on a Pan European. I eventually sold it in 2005 with 200k+ in the log book. The engine was rebuilt twice.

The problem is trying to sell a bike with higher miles, most buyers look at 2 thing appearance and miles (they know little else). where I live, its hard not to do 100 miles a day, and I live in the middle of a big city.... this guy was expecting bikes to have less then 10K miles, and thats just something I rarely see.

In all my years riding, I've never see a bike with 10k on it after about 2 years old. My oldest riding friend who is now 73 doesn't do many miles now, but his BMW R1150GS has a huge mileage on it and it looks like new, he bought it new. in 2000.
Don't know why but I feel very sad when people talk about having low mileages, makes me think how long has it spend not being ridden, either to not wanting to or its been a bit of a dog.
