Over the last couple of years, obviously only noticeable since 2015 I've noticed that while Rossi is still undeniably the most popular rider out there, Marquez's supporters(the red army?) have been slowly catching up. It's not quite a 50/50 split but the red army is certainly letting its presence be known online and are openly fighting with the Valeban which has made for some very interesting comment sections.

It will be interesting to see how this continues when Marquez continues to win and Rossi continues his current trajectory.

Am I the only one who has noticed this? Is it the lack of success? Is it that there is a new sherriff in town? Has Rossi's mask slipped that some former supporters no longer support his actions or him as a rider? All of the above? Something else?

Yes the yellow mustard ship is sinking & synn & danski are both anchors on it going down. :D

The blind followers will always be just that, but as new followers of the sport grow , Rossi will become more and more irrelevant . I mean let’s face it, anyone who has started following GP in the last 8 years wonder what all the hubbub s about. All they have seen is Stoner, Lorenzo and Marquez do anything special and In that time frame Even Pedrosa has been his superior . The faithful have nothing but memories and as they have been educated , those memories become tainted as they learn more n more about how important tires are in the world of racing. 10 years ago this site was like every other, one big Rossi circle jerk.

Excellent thread P4,

I had this very thought when I was surfing through videos on YouTube. I normally skip over the comments, but this video I stopped to view was specifically created to highlight all of Marc's transgressions, starting with the Wilorot, ending with the grand finale: the Argentine Racing Incident Heard Round the World! Oddly, there was no video clip of Sepang 2015. So I decided to read the comments, and I was genuinely surprised to read people defending Marc, and more interestingly, calling Rossi a whining crybaby that should retire to let the big boys race. This was really noteworthy because in the past there wasn't a dissenting voice. I hope this continues.

It had to happen. rossi has just gotten more and more outrageous as time goes by.

It's just cyclical and a sign of times.

To put it simply, people like winners and just as they jumped on the Rossi train 20 odd years ago when he was at the forefront and winning, today that train is driven by Marquez and so it is filling up quick.

Want to see an example ......... look at 2017 where at season's end of 2016 most people did not comment on Dovi etc (Baz and Dubs as exceptions in this place, but look at multiple forums) but by season's end he was everyone's favourite with an increased presence at race weekends and higher social media mention.

Sad to say for the yellow files but Rossi has simply not been winning as much but whilst saying that I do not feel that his numbers have dropped greatly (if at all) in fan terms, but more that Marc is the flavour and so he will attract more followers. These will also likely be the fans against whom us old head rail in years to come as we wonder about their fanaticism and so forth ..........

Basically it is about winners not about carry-on and attitude and whilst sure, Stoner/Lorenzo have been winners they also never really embraced the 'every smiling/joker' persona that the likes of Rossi and Marquez have done, thus they were never going to have the exposure.

It’s more than that. I, and everyone else, loved Rossi when he was a happy-go-lucky kid, and a phenomenal rider. Lately, however, he’s become entitled, and bitter. Instead of accepting his declining skills with advancing age, he has chosen to demonize Marquez. After using dirty riding techniques on MM, MM returned same, and with greater effectiveness. Now Rossi is waging war off the track, which is disingenuous in the extreme. Knowledgable fans see and disdain this, hence his drop in popularity.

That's interesting, and I'd say you're probably in the minority. After Sepang 15 Rossi showed much of the petulance we saw after Argentina, yet there was a massive outcry and it seemed his fans were exceptionally energized. But I'm happy to hear this sentiment expressed. It doesn't quite give me hope about humankind, but I'll take this as a positive sign.

Hey its not just me and dubs on the bandwagon! The Dovi bandwagon had the biggest increase in members of any bandwagon. Holpuck and birdman joined so that makes a growth of 100%. Dont see any other fan groups expanding like that! :D
