Significant weekend?

What a fantastic weekend for us petrol heads!
<

One of the best Moto GP races I have ever seen. Casey Stoner has now proven to the world that he is 'the' man to beat this year. Away from the frenzy of fans' opinions, I'm sure Valentino has known this since pre season testing.
It was a remarkable last couple of laps from Casey, proving he had ridden a measured race, and had just that little bit more in reserve, in particular with regard to braking! Valentino was just awesome, he tried everything he knew and was on his absolute limit.
To beat Valentino in this manner at Catalunya is significant. The title is by no means Casey's yet, Valentino is too good, and we're all waiting to see if Casey actually makes any of the mistakes we have become accustomed to with him. But you have to say, he's looking up for the challenge, and psychologically Valentino knows he has a huge battle on his hands. Fortunately, he is a truly great champion, and if anybody can regroup and take the battle to Casey, it is Vale. You have to admit though, he threw everything at Casey at Catalunya, historically a victorious circuit for Valentino, and came out second best, albeit a superb one.

The F1 on the other hand was a very different story. I'll stand up now and be ready to be shot down in flames, Lewis Hamilton will be 2007 World Champion! He has huge natural talent, unrivalled determination, a fantastic car and World Champ or not, a fragile team mate. This result, the comparison between how Lewis and Fernando handled the situation, and the championship points table will certainly tip the McLaren balance in Lewis's favour.
Fernando needs to be protected, if the team supremacy doesn't work in his favour and he is left to his own devices to make up the difference, he will make mistakes. As his team mate, Lewis doesn't fit into that mould.
Ron Dennis is a PR guru, he always says the right thing publicly. Of course having taken on the reigning World Champion McLaren are going to be seen initially to be giving him the total respect he deserves. But they have invested a lot of money in Lewis, and his introduction into the team well planned. How much of Fernando's appointment is simply due to the fact that he was available, and it is better to have the World Champ in your team rather than with a rival? I'm sure Ron will take greater satisfaction from Lewis taking the title, not to mention the publicity it will generate.

So, I think a significant weekend, a sign that a new era is upon us in both sports. What do you think? Who are the other youngsters going with Casey and Lewis? The F1 shows huge potential for Nick Heidfeld, Robert Kubica, maybe a few others. The Moto GP is harder to predict for me still.

all i'm bothered about is exciting racing and Casey provided that in Catalunya and Lewis finally has given us Brits something we can shout about in the world of motorsports again! bout time too

I hope you're right about Lewis. I stopped watching F1 religiously and only catch a 10min highlights segment now and from what I've seen of Lewis he has everything it takes mentally to dominate the other drivers. He's calm, intelligent and races to win. He races to win, but its tempered with a cool head that you'd expect from a much more experienced competitor. The thing that impresses me most is he doesn't give a crap about Alonso being world champ, there is no intimidation its the sort of attitude you see with Casey when racing Rossi. You are just another guy in my way to winning. Lewis has fantastic natural talent and I really hope he takes the crown.

Also I despise Alonso, thats another story.

I agree Burky, I think we are entering an exciting new era in Motor Racing. In F1 we don't just have Hamilton, we have Kubica, Kovalainen, Rosberg, Piquet Jr, Sutil, Glock, Conway and Rossiter all coming through the ranks. And then in MotoGP we have De Angelis, Dovizioso, Lorenzo, Bautista and maybe even Ant West. So its gonna be interesting in the next few years.

Moto GP is obviously looking interesting and i dont think this weekend inparticular was significant as we all already knew that Stoner and Pedrosa are 2 very good riders capable of challenging for both race wins and championships. the future looks good and if Rossi keeps riding for a few more years aswell then with Lorenzo etc also joining the party we should be in for some great seasons.

In the formula 1 i think we all knew Lewis would win at some point this year maybe not at Canada though. The race was always his as ferrari were strangely uncompetitve and alonso had a disaster of a race a mix of bad driving and bad luck for him. Hamilton could be champion this year.

Hey, I'm pleased not to have been slaughtered, I was half expecting it!

I think what I'm trying to predict is, if we could jump 5 years forward and present day arguements aside, who would we be talking about?

F1......well I think Lewis is going to dominate. I also think the opposition will be so good, he really will have to fulfill the potential he is showing so early on to do the aforementioned dominating. I hope I'm right, because having a Brit as the new Schumacher of F1 would be superb, especially if he is winning titles in the 'Schumacher - Hakkinen' mould.

But Moto GP..........could we be in line for a succession of one time champions? What I am interested in seeing is old Golden Boots v The Doctor! I hope Vale is around long enough to show twinkletoes who the real deal is!

If that's the case you Brits will have plenty to cheer about
<

I'm no Brit, but I will cheer along, because the guy is really amazing!!

Of course it's so easy to jump to conclusions, but I also think Lewis has the potential to be another MS/AS. His F1 entrance is also impressive like Senna's (looking at what they achieved before F1).

Just when we thought F1 might be exciting again............ bummer.

The thought of him maybe being THAT good is kinda exciting I would say, but let's face it, F1 nowadays, just isn't that exciting anymore.

It is and it isn't, its just not what it used to be. I should have Bernie Ecclestone's job/money, that'd be exciting.

What would you do if you were in his position? Would you buy beer with the money (that would be A LOT of beer
<
!!!) or would you do something useful?

I might buy some beer i guess
<
But i'd also buy other awesome stuff to play with. AND i'd make F1 good again, Button would always lose, and Honda would hire a decent driver and win everything. Plus i'd pay for DC to have an operation to round the corners of his square head off so he was more aerodynamic.

Then i'd wake up with a hangover

Good point mate!!!

You're too funny

Funny Tommy..that's your new nickname

For F1 in future I have only one hope: more exciting racing!!
It should be top of the top 4 wheel racing... but it's not
<
I think that's sad.
Of course it has to be technology playground too, but without proper racing, it means nothing. I have that love/hate relation with F1. I will always watch it (and get angry often), but if I started to watch 2 wheel racing before F1 I would probably forget it after first race.

And yes, Hamilton will make huge mark!!! I have no doubt about it.

About MGP... I'm happy for talented youngsters, and as much as I would like to see Rossi beats all records, I would prefer different champion every year.
