Marc Marquez can become the greatest and most successful rider in MotoGP history, according to Texan legend Kevin Schwantz.

Here is the article: Marc Marquez can be greatest ever, says Schwantz | MCN

Do you have to reach the number of wins of your predecessors to be considered their equal or superior? I don't think so.

Lets say Marquez runs of 5 titles in a row averaging 11-12 wins a season, then hangs it up. Are you going to say that since he doesnt have the number of wins or titles, he was not a superior rider?

There is no arguing the competition is/was miles ahead of what Rossi faced when he was racking up the majority of his titles and wins. All you have to do is look at the numbers of Lorenzo, Marquez, Pedrosa, and Stoner compared to Biaggi, Cappirossi, Gibernau, Barros.

If Stoner were still around, this would be the most insanely talented field the sport has ever seen, might be without him.

First of all Schwantz a ....... ..... that's only trying to cozy up to Marquez because he's the next big thing. If you look at some of the true greats like Jarno,Hailwood, Roberts, they won on .... bikes and great bikes. There's no way you can give Marquez that accolade if he spends his Career on a Honda in an era where the rules are written by Honda

Wait...what? We have a new GOAT? I thought Rossi was the GOAT...or was it GLOAT?

Lets get a few things straight, when Rossi was the GOAT (just a few years ago, with the records, etc.) he was doing it with a significant advantage. Marc's situation today is similar (that is by arbitrary design, though we have a spec tire...) few have the machine and team to challenge him, really only one (Lorenzo). The sophistication of the factories has become exceedingly regimented after 2007, in that only 2 factory Hondas and 2 Yamahas have the capacity to win; Stoner's wins on the Ducati were truly a praise worthy achievement which I'd be willing to bet couldn't be duplicated by our 'new' GOAT. This is lost in 99.9% of the viewing public, "experts", "journalist", Kropaganda, and even many riders appear are ignorant to their reality. This is a managed sport, and the management has become increasingly sophisticated.

I don't know how old roscoe is or has been watching the sport, but friend, in 2010 Valentino Rossi was the undisputed GOAT. Consider this, who might we be calling the GOAT (after VR) had Stoner been on a Repsol Honda since 2006? VR spent two years on a factory prototype machine called a Ducati and proceeded in looking ordinary for the entire time (that same kinda of ordinary that we call positions 5-21). You will get a bunch of apologist telling you well its because he was old, etc. Yet he was winning easily in 2010. What does this tell you about the parity of the sport? What does this tell you about how records are achieved in the new era? For the record, personally I'd have to give the nod to Hailwood as the undisputed GOAT. Up there would be a few others too. I wouldn't put Ago on that GOAT list. We are talking about the man with all the records, yet why do they ring hollow? Oh yeah, because he was on a rocket ship while others were on horse drawn carriages, comparatively speaking. All this doesn't mean Marc, VR, Ago, etc. are .... riders (as some will interpret my post) it just means that when the field is stacked in one's favor, the title doesn't mean as much. Then again, some might consider Hulk Hogan the GOAT of WWF....and they'd be right.

I think if time was different and Marquez was on the '07 Ducati, he could also replicate Stoners performance, though if you are meaning the latter years I'm not so sure if he could have done what Casey was able to over his 4 years on the red beast.

The rest I mostly agree, and your Editing comment made me spit my beer.

I cant disagree with you JKD....but i am still an MM fan....

Rossi should never be in the conversation as the GOAT. What this kid is doing is far more impressive than anything that chump Rossi has ever done. Who was Rossi beating all those years? I'll tell ya, nobody. Once talent arrived on scene Rossi became what he has always been. A good not great racer. Stoner is the only person on the planet with the talent to ride close to this kid at the moment.

 what's up Jason, I knew you would love this place lol

This whole thing got me thinking about Schwantz a little bit as well. Met him once and he seemed cool but the more I see of him popping up the less I like him. He reminds me of the 72 dolphins without the wins. Kevin your 45 minutes is up.

Marquez defined where the line was last year by stepping across it what, 15 times? And how many times has he jumped off the thing in pre-season and racing this year? Is it zero?

That's the scary thing about Marquez this year for the competition. He now knows the limit and is riding with margin in hand as well as still learning. If the others want to compete with him, they need to whittle away at their own already razor thin margins, if that is at all possible.

It's highly unlikely he'll win all the races this year but it really is hard to see anyone of the current crop staying with him in future, as much as DP & JL are trying to up their own games.

The records already broken shows he's better than any those who have gone before. Ago simply doesn't count because of the non factory supported era he rode in mainly. Doohan took years to dominate (admittedly through initally inferior kit and top draw competiton). Rossi had weak oppostion, the Michelin man, his own egotistical demanding ways and his dodgy uncle Carmelo in his corner. Stoner burnt out rather than faded away.

The world of MotoGP is Marc's oyster if he wants it.

but: Marquez hadn't really been challenged in MotoGP so far. last year there was no pressure on him, things started to click while his rivals got injured and he coldbloodedly made the very most of it. when Lorenzo came back strong in the second part of the season, podium finishes were enough to bag the title. (please note: the rookie title was a massive, massive achievement, take nothing away of him!). this year he is riding on a wave while his opponents are struggeling with age, machinery, and lacking confidence. we haven't seen him seriously put under pressure so far - which is to a great part due to his undoubted ability. but still - how will he handle real race-to-race pressure over a full season? probably quite well, but that's not been the case so far, so we will have to see. because no doubt, this situation will arise sooner or later.

My personal belief is that stoner was potentially the only rider with a hope of beating Marquez. I mean Stoner developed the 2014 machine. Him quitting was the only thing that saved DP's career at Honda.

Rossi is a great rider and a great personality to have in the sport. For those that haven't seen him ride up close, he's amazing to watch....I just came back from Jerez and it was almost surreal how fast and smooth he still is. Having said that the truth is the the competition is the Rossi era was non exsistent. Once Lorenzo and stoner showed up that fact became obvious.

Also the spec tire rule along with other rules that have been pushed have really hurt competition.

Now I feel accumulative advantage, (tire spec, development freezes, restrictions on performance, etc) are helping too much in deciding the end results. I almost rather see everyone on a "cup" bike and see who really can cut the mustard.

I'm just afraid GP will become a charade, a circus instead the cutting edge of racing and technology. Though having said that I hate the fact they all use auto blippers and anti-wheelie, and TC, just to name a few things. I would love if WSBK ran all the same circuits, cause it's much closer and real racing.

Harsh. He beat Lorenzo & Stoner in 2008 & 2009, so he had competition in those years when he was no longer young.

He was beating them, but they were young and new to the premiere class. Stoner was really the last of the hot headed riders, not produced I a Petri dish or test tube like today's riders. Nowadays, riders are polite, and seemingly immune to the mind games that were played in the old days.

I want GP to be like the TT where personalities are half the reason you come out. I want Guy Martin and Rossi to open a school that produces great riders with great characters!

Bollocks - Stoner was WC in 2007, so surely a worthy adversary in 2008 & 2009. Lorenzo won in 2010, so he was "young and new to the premier class" until he won the WC in your book?

Talk about twisting the facts to fit the idea that Rossi never had any strong competition.

09 was legit, 08 was a gift. Dorna forced Bridgestone to supply Rossi with technology that others had created. Without the advantage of the tires they had developed, Ducati had nothing, while the only other 2 contenders were stuck on inferior Michelins. The statement he never had strong competition was false, but when you compare the first 6 years where he racked up 53wins and 5 straight titles, to the point where Pedrosa and Stoner entered the series in 06, then Lorenzo in 08, his win total is 27 in the following 9 years. When you put a pencil to those numbers, its not hard to conclude that had Rossi been racing against the type talent his whole career that he has raced against since 2006, the number of wins and titles would look quite different. Same can be said for Doohan. This is why a lot of people consider Stoner to be the best so far. He came into the series and raced against the most talented field in the history of the sport and racked up 38 wins and 2 titles in 7 seasons. He beat everyone while they were in their prime, which is something even Marquez will not be able to say he did.

Agree that the early Rossi years the competiton was less, just objected to Thamer's blanket statement, followed by his justification as to why Stoner and Lorenzo were not valid rivals in 08 & 09.

You say 08 was a gift, but JB, Rossi et al did need to modify that bike quite a bit to get it to work with the 'stones. You could also say it wasn't against decent competition because Stoner had a bad start to the year with an 11th and a 16th, plus 2 DNFs later on, but...

Best is always difficult to determine - agree that Stoner was a stunning rider, but would he have got on with 500s etc, there are too many variables. We have been lucky to have seen so many good riders in a short time period.

I personally think Stoner would have been devastating on the 500's, unlike Dani or Jorge. Marquez also shows that type of bike control that lends itself to riding anything fast.

Oh, so Rossi's only reason for winning so many races was because his rivals like Biaggi, Capirossi and so forth were weak competition? Let's see Marquez try and win on 500cc monster with no fly-by-wire throttle-control, anti-wheelie and anti-brake lock electronics and the lot.
