I’m not so sure about that Mike. IIRC most of the riders called Rossi’s favoured tyre unridable and Michelin let slip that they went back and worked on Rossi’s favoured tyre despite the riders almost unanimously favouring the other tyre. Clearly there was still issues with the tyre that was voted in originally by the riders but it does make somewhat of a smoking gun that instead of fixing the issues with the chosen tyre Michelin seemed to have gone back and revised/reworked the tyre that Rossi chose.

Didn’t they have a vote which went the way of the Rossi tire?. As I recall only Vinales, Lorenzo and one other voted to retain the tire which had been the overwhelming choice in a pre-season vote. Vinales of course was Rossi’s team-mate who had done much better than him on the initial tire and faded away subsequently, and I as a Lorenzo fan was annoyed with Lorenzo being disadvantaged. As I said, I wouldn’t have had much problem if the Vinales/Lorenzo tire had continued along with the ‘new’ tire.

I was referring to the original pre-season tyre vote. After which most riders had called the tyre Rossi preferred (IIRC he was the only rider who voted for that there) unrideable or almost unrideable. For the turn around in the riders favour of the ‘new’ tyre that was selected after the vote during the season the only reasonable assumption that can be made is that Michelin went back and worked on Rossi’s favoured tyre (which I believe they used words that implied they did at the time) despite the fact every rider but one preferred the other tyre. Obviously the tyre they came back with was a better option according to most of the riders but IMO that they went back and improved a tyre only one rider voted for instead of improving the tyre the riders almost unanimously voted for us a smoking gun.

I am hardly Rossi’s greatest admirer on here, but while I agree with most of what you say about his treatment of competitors, I don’t go for the advantages and manipulation of officialdom things so much, basically I agree with J4rn0’s argument that he had the advantages which have always accrued to the top rider or riders such as my personal idol Mick Doohan, and perhaps at least to an extent earned and contributed to by such riders, and as far as manipulating officialdom imo it has more been his Uncle Carmelo falling over himself to aid the cause of his meal ticket, but not to the extent of contriving results. He did seem to use his influence to get on the Bridgestone tires in 2008, but as Gaz says you would in his position if you could and believed they offered an advantage. He has gotten away with a few things, the Jerez last corner pass on Gibernau for one.

When you have the head of the organization that runs a racing series threatening tire suppliers with expulsion from the sport if they don’t supply a certain rider, that is manipulation of results . Had Carmelo not forced Bridgestone to supply Rossi against their will, he almost assuredly doesn’t win any titles from 05.
