I always thought Rossi would stay in MotoGP until he was ready for his VR46 team to move up to the premier class, then he would stay on as manager/public face of that team. I think Dorna said a few years back that if Rossi wanted to bring VR46 onto the MotoGP grid, there would be room for it. It would make sense to stay in the class until he was ready to bring his team up, to make sure that VR46 was always in premier class and thereby protect the brand.
For Yamaha to just not renew Rossi's contract would be difficult for their brand. Not being a part of MotoGP would be difficult for the Rossi VR46 brand.

VR46 racing team stepping up to MotoGP makes more sense IMO. Not that I would bet against what you’ve said either.
I predicted based on nothing but a gut feeling that Petronas would become the factory sponsor/team for Yamaha when Rossi retires given Yamaha’s previous issue with getting sponsorship without Rossi.
Even with what’s happened I still think it’s a possibility, Yamaha having Petronas as their factory sponsor makes sense IMO. The factory team hasn’t been able to have a solid partnership with any sponsor the way Honda has had with Repsol or Ducati has had with Phillip Morris. Partnering with Petronas to that degree makes sense for both parties IMO, IIRC Monster was already signed to be the factory sponsor when the Petronas team came to be and their deal only lasts for two years. Petronas gets to be the factory sponsor and have a chance at being a world title winning sponsor/team.
So if Petronas becomes Yamahas title sponsor and Rossi decides to continue for at least one more season. Fabios crew goes with him to the factory team, as will likely happen whether Rossi continues or not, the Petronas team now has some of their staff employed on at least one side of the factory garage. Rossi takes his entire team with him to his newly formed VR46 team. Rossi wouldn’t have to buy the team spots off Petronas if they wanted to continue with only the factory team, he could do a deal with sponsorship. Either running some Petronas sponsorship on his teams bikes or Petronas being the title sponsor of his GP team and maybe even replacing sky on all of his teams bikes.
Unless Rossi has no plans to ever bring his team to MotoGP then I’m not sure that riding for Petronas when he knows he can get almost whatever he wants from Dorna and Yamaha, with two spots still being available on the grid if Petronas didn’t want to come to the party would make any sense for him. With Luca Marini being his moto2 teams most likely rider to be able to make the jump up to MotoGP the time from a marketing point of view and maybe from a personal point of view (as an older brother I could easily see him wanting to be in a team with his brother for at least a year) the time has never been better for his own team in the top class IMO. If he’s having a better 2021 than his brother he can ride on with no pressure from a team who wants to sign a promising youngster, if he can’t compete with his brother then it’s an easy decision for him to make.
Having said this, just because I believe it makes sense or even if it does make sense it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.
Probably unfair given the stage each rider has been at in their respective careers during the overlap of those careers, but hard to go past MM in my biased opinion particularly if/when he gets the 7th/9th or 8th/10th; Rossi himself has made the 8th/10th thing significant, not that he ever needed to win same, everyone acknowledged him as Ago's superior. MM has dominated Rossi over pretty much his whole career, and also handily beaten riders who were competitive with Rossi closer to his heyday, all with control tires and latterly a control ecu etc, etc, and been close to imperturbable while doing so. Rossi has also revealed himself to be more than capable of petulance over that time rather than being the all conquering super cool god like rider he looked like back then.
Had Rossi retired in his pomp after the 7th/9th title much more argument about whether MM is even his equal, again imo.

At the presentation of the Sky Racing Team VR46 at the Ranch in Tavullia, even though he was absent, the man on everybody’s mind was still Valentino Rossi. It might have been because of the location, or it might have been because there’s a red-hot climate surrounding the Doctor these days. Yamaha have chosen to focus on youngsters Vinales and Quartararo, without waiting for Rossi who will only decide whether or not to continue at Mugello. At the Ranch, of course, there was also Uccio Salucci, sporting director of the Valentino Rossi Academy and friend of the nine-time world champion. What are Vale's feelings these days? Was it bad for him?
"No, it wasn't bad - said Uccio on the fringe of the presentation - With Yamaha we have been talking about it for days and we have seen each other a lot in this period, also with Lin Jarvis. There is a good relationship and transparency between us both in the nice and not so nice decisions, like this one. We reached an agreement together because Yamaha couldn't wait until Mugello for Valentino to make his move on the market, so we didn't want to dig our heels in because it wouldn't have been fair to the youngsters and because it wouldn’t have looked good."
Should Vale decide to continue, there is the Petronas scenario with official treatment for 2021-2022, what do you think about that?
"Yes, there was this offer and we said, ‘why not?!" But now everything revolves around Valentino who wants to see how he goes and if he goes well it wouldn't be bad to race with Petronas".
What are the next moves? In a very short time, everyone will be out on track in Sepang.
"Yes, we will leave on Monday. I can see that Vale is relaxed, excited and eager to try the new Yamaha, he always talks about it and says that in his opinion the manufacturer has taken the right direction, he had already noticed something in the Valencia and Jerez tests. Now we will see the definitive bike, he can't wait to get on it."
Further recent news regards Lorenzo's official status as a Yamaha tester. How did Valentino take it?
"He is happy to have someone like Lorenzo working for him. Lorenzo is Lorenzo, last year he had a difficult time, he knows Yamaha just like us and is a five-time world champion. Yamaha did a great job hiring him."
But in a year's time there could be one too many ‘Lorenzos’ in Luca Marini's ascent to MotoGP, and in particular in the Petronas team.
“We will see, good for them. But if I had to choose, I would put Marini in 2021 in Petronas".
Talking about Marini, today he presented the new bikes. Is it the right year for Luca?
"Every year is crucial, but I don't mind telling you that Luca is excited about being able to do something important this year. Only one rider can win the world championship, but I don’t see why it can’t be him."
Moto2 is now much closer to MotoGP. Do you believe that Luca is ready for the jump or is he one of those riders who must first win the world championship and then settle in?
“If you arrive in MotoGP as a world champion you obviously have something extra on you. But Luca is already a top-class rider, he is meticulous, he works on telemetry and he is a bit of an engineer-rider. At these levels they are all strong, but it is this aspect that makes the difference".
A lot was expected of him even in 2019 ...
“Last year we suffered from the change in the tyre, which got bigger at the rear. We weren't good as a team at giving Luca a competitive bike but as soon as he arrived, he won two races in a row, then he crashed in Australia and we lost some ground."
Today the whole team was at Luca's side, including Moto3. What do you think of these riders?
"The team is close-knit; in recent years I have learned that it is better to have a team of riders who get along with each other rather than the phenomenon that doesn’t listen or does things the way he wants. They are friends, they are close. That’s the way I see them."

Exactly. Yamaha weren't going to trumpet to the press the fact that they were letting him go. Too much fan backlash. This sort of soft soap press release lets Ross save face and besides, despite his protestations to the contrary, he probably needed a friendly intervention to break the addictive fame and adulation habit. It can't be that he's the only person incapable of seeing that the longer he stays with decreasing results, the more he tarnishes his legacy.

I didn't realise Rossi was still racing - 10 years with nothing and over 2 years without even a podium.
