Remember... .... on the internet comes back to haunt you.

I've posted a smattering from 2007 and 2008.

Curve - Marco is gonna hand Stoner his ... in 08.

Lex - I have a feeling this race is going to be a circus. (9.3-07)

RCV600RR - I have a feeling this race is going to be a circus. (10/20/07)

ptk50 - The ducati domination & with that Stoner's domination is over (9/26/07)

Firetrap - 1. I will get very drunk.
2. I will enjoy the eye-candy on offer at this fabulous event.
3. I will be slapped by Mrs Firetrap for enjoying the eye-candy.
4. I will celebrate Australia's latest world champion.

Keshav - Philip Island 2007
Casey Stoner
Ant West
Chris Vermuelen
Mick Doohan
Casey Stoners's bird
Paul Hogan
Mel Gibson
Russell Crowe
Hugh Jackman
Nicole Kidman
Heath Ledger
Hugo Weaving
Guy Pearce
Toni Collette
Geoffrey Rush
Ned Kelly
Neville Bonner
Phar Lap
That shrimp from the barby
Wayne Gardener's gardender

Phleg - I predict... a white man shall win the race.

Curve - Ok....If it [Stoner not getting enough credit for winning on the Ducati] bothers him so much...prove everybody wrong.... do it on the Yamaha/Honda/Kawi or Zuki..

Krazy91 - stoner is a ....... only austrailians like him

Raven46 - jesus ye aussies can be a miserable shower of bas$ards

Rog - talk is cheap and when you talk bollocks its even cheaper

Curve - I like ham.

Pinky - a game of chinese whispers is more reliable than what u read here.

Gaz - Not all of us Aussies are blind worshippers.

Rog - I think it is always unwise in life to assume you deal in unvarnished truth whilst everyone else is biased ; I freely admit my bias.

Drill - It`s handbag time again.

Michaelm - My view is he [Rossi] wants to win next year [2008], then retire.

teomolca - My pick, Nakano by a landslide

Masterridley - The most critical year [2008] for il dottore. If he screws it up he's done

Bikergirl - I must admit though, that I'm mostly looking forward to psycho lonrenzo's arrival [at Yamaha]. That guy so wants to be Rossi when he grows up!!

Jazzkat - There will be punch ups.

Krusty - Casey is a machine ... he is just so single minded! As I said elsewhere on this forum, he will go back-to-back next year UNLESS his wife gets pregnant!

MyLexicon - Is Rossi an ..... for switching to tires he has never ridden on--tires that have never been fitted to a 4-stroke Yamaha? Does he even have to worry about looking daft at this point in his career?

Michaelm - [2007] I don't think casey will be riding for hrc any time soon.

Krusty - Jorge will not win a race next year [2008] (which Max did in his 1st year) and I think he won't even make the podium.

I like Bikergirls comment, some of the other .... is less memorable :D

It'll be another MM year, (would prefer it to be one of the following, Dovi, Zarco, Vinales), followed by (in no order) the Bin Men (yes I'm sure you all know who, its 2 btw), Pedrosa, Rins, Rossi and Spartacus.

When Marquez says this is the best bike he has had in any pre-season, it is an ominous sign. With the tires the same as last year and assurances they will stay that way, he will get stronger and stronger over the next few years.

So I was out by a year. Rossi should have retired at the end of 2009, not 2008, and no-one including several of his current critics on here such as I am would have denied his Goathood.

I still think there is a fair chance he intimated to Yamaha about retirement, and they took him at his word.

C'mon dude... the point of the post was never to take anyone to task for being off. It was to good-naturedly (If that's a word) celebrate the general hubris we almost all suffer from when making predictions. Tho I especially love the one where you said Stoner was unlikely to ride for Honda. And Curve's, essentially challenging Stoner to take a championship on a Honda :p

To be fair - he prefaced his statement with "considering the last few winters". And the last few pre-season bikes were very much considered packages filled with flaws to be overcome. I wouldn't read too much into the statement which is fairly vague.

Sure, and your point was well taken in regard to Stoner and Honda which is why I made no comment about that, particularly not to call out Curve who was a poster I enjoyed and respected. If I was to reflect, what it shows as you say is how quickly things can change. Neither I not anyone else could possibly have anticipated that Ducati/the Marlboro man would be looking to replace Stoner only 18 months later. If Synn is still around what your quotes did show was that there were many pro-Rossi posters on here at one time, and even the more astute among them such as Curve bought into the 2007 Ducati being a vastly superior bike which rode itself narrative.

While I don’t quite have total recall and nor do I put myself forward to remember for the forum wholesale, I do recall things like discussions even from 10 years ago and their context, and still don’t resile from my hypothesis that Rossi had made made intimations to Yamaha about retiring then changed his mind, hence my previous reply.

It was interesting to look through posts from the early days of the forum which was predominantly pro Rossi. Also early post from Rog were very even-handed when discussing Stoner.

The Ducati-Stoner story was perplexing in 2007, as Stoner was always fast, but crashed much, much more than Dani. When he blew Dani and VR away in 2007, people assumed the Ducati was extraordinary, especially when Loris was so competitive in 2006, and Bayliss jumped on the bike at Valencia 2006 and blew the field away. When everyone saw the straight-line speed of the Ducati in 2007, many assumed it was the Ducati.

With hindsight, we can now see that Stoner was a special talent. Also with hindsight, the Bridgestones were an underrated factor in that championship victory.

I knew Stoner was a big part of the equation when I saw his performance at Le Mans (in the wet, HP ain't the factor!) and at Catalunya (where he beat Rossi in a straight fight).

Imo the polarising event for opinions on both sides of the argument was LS 08 (the Corkscrew incident in particular) and its aftermath.

You didn’t like the Phillip K .... references?. I read all his books as a kid, and consider him to have been a premier futurist/contributor to the literature of ideas as SF was then, but didn’t enjoy his actual writing/prose style as much as I do William Gibson’s for instance. I always thought the movie Bladerunner which is high on the list of my personal top 10 movies of all time was better than the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, although like Kubrick’s 2001 having read the book was handy the first time you saw the movie.

No - you and I are on the same page re: PKD. I just haven't cared for the Netflix "Electric Dreams" series based on his early, and rather primitive short stories. .... wasn't a refined prose stylist. His characters were fairly two-dimensional and yet in his blue-collar writing style he vividly conveyed his meth-fueled, anxiety drenched stories of paranoia and existential dread that really set itself apart from that of his contemporaries. He was to my mind a Camus/Kafka hybrid of Sci Fi.

MM will win the title, but it will be close and both Ducatis will fight for the title. It's still too early to predict the performance of the M1.
