FIM reveals 2010 MotoGP entry list
Valentino Rossi leads an entry list that includes six full-time rookies and no Kawasakis for the first time in eight years
The 2010 MotoGP entry list has been officially unveiled with 17 riders confirmed as full-time participants, one less than the total at the start of the 2009 season.

No surprises adorn the list, with eight factory-backed riders being flanked by a further nine satellite entrants, but while two new teams – Interwetten Honda and Aspar Ducati – will make their debuts in 2010, we have also lost Hayate Racing, Scot Honda and Grupo Francisco Hernando Ducati.

It means there will be one less rider on the grid in Qatar than there was at the opener in 2009, although there is hope that newcomers FB Corse and Inmotec – so far absent from the list – will make an appearance at some stage.

Meanwhile, there are no immediate sponsor changes, although Aspar Ducati and LCR Honda are currently without a title backer.

Also, several riders will change numbers in 2010, most notably Dani Pedrosa, who returns to #26 having held #3 for some years, while Ben Spies, who ran the #19 in World Superbikes has settled for #11 after seemingly losing out to Alvaro Bautista.

In all, six rookies will compete in their first full season this year – Spies, Bautista, Marco Simoncelli, Hiroshi Aoyama, Hector Barbera and Aleix Espargaro. Also, there will no Kawasaki on the grid since it first entered in 2002.

A total of 39 riders will feature on a bumper grid for the inaugural Moto2 World Championship race in Qatar with a variety of riders from grand prix, World Superbike and domestic racing making up the entry list.

The much anticipated series, which takes over from the 250cc class, has attracted a total of 39 riders, 23 teams, 14 constructors and 18 nationalities for what promises to be an exciting first year of competition.

Leading the entry list are the MotoGP exiles, most notably former race winner Toni Elias, who will ride a Moriwaki prepared by Gresini Racing, but also Alex de Angelis, Niccolo Canepa, Gabor Talmacsi and Yuki Takahashi.

Former MotoGP Kawasaki rider Anthony West is also plotting a return to the grand prix scene in 2010, but is currently classified as a reserve rider.

Additionally, Fonsi Nieto, Roberto Rolfo, Claudio Corti and Yannick Guerra all make the move over from the World Superbike paddock, while a large proportion of familiar 250cc riders and 125cc graduates make up the rest of the field.

Of the 14 constructors set to enter, Suter is the most popular option, supplying bikes to a total of 12 riders, while Moriwaki is second with six entries. As well as Gresini, familiar team names also include Tech 3 – who will enter their own bike –, Scot Racing and Pons Racing, all current or former MotoGP teams.

From a British point of view, Scott Redding will fly the flag with the Belgian Marc VDS Racing Team having graduates from the 125cc class.

Good to see a ton of racers for moto2. My only concern is slow riders being lapped. Either way, should be some great racing

Thats the only time Spies will ever lose anything to Alvro-bot. I like #11 better although it suits bautista better, being thats how old he looks.

Only 17 riders, that is so sad. Especially with the 40+ list of moto2 entries.

this will start to change in 2011 with the new 1000 rules. 20 to 24 riders by 2013.

This guy is an absolute liability. He scattered the pack on the first corner in WSS wildcarding at Nürburgring breaking Tommy Hill's leg in the process. He has a reputation for causing this sort of chaos.

I like how Moto is looking I was worried everyone would go for the same bike, since they're cheap. But there's like 7 or 8 manufacturers.

Though I guess teams could buy different bikes mid way through the season since they're so cheap.

You beat me to this observation brother! Melandri has been 33 since 2003 (Always).

His last name is Tode, what did you expect?

Tode = death.

must be an error- that gresini bike had a 24 on it LAST year, being ridden by Elias who runs the #24

I don't have a problem with Ben getting his original # back. He ran the #11 plate for years in the AMA up until he won his championships. Even then, he covertly kept his #11 as part of his #1 plate.

So does this mean that MotoGP is no longer an FIM endorsed WC as from memory the FIM contract with Dorna requires a minimum of 18 bikes? Or has a deal been done to let Dorna of the hook on grounds of mental disability???

I am not sure anything will help Duhrna's 'Mental Disability'... Why did they mess up and keep messsing up trying to stick stupid rules?

It is like if they had the Golden Nugget mine and instead of exploiting it, they kept on filling it up with dirt!

Not surprised to see the MotoGP grid remain at 18. It would have been nice to have one more, but that last entry would have been at the back of the pack anyway.

I don't rate Bautista very highly, so I would not be in the least surprise if Spies beats him.

A moto2 grid of 39 bikes is quite a dramatic increase from the 250s. I hope they can put on just as good a show.

Early 2010 predictions:

MotoGP
1. Stoner
2. Rossi
3. Lorenzo
4. Pedrosa
5. Dovizioso

Moto2
1. Elias
2. Pasini
3. De Angelis
4. Di Meglio
5. De Rosa

7. Hiroshi Aoyama JPN Intrerwetten-Honda MotoGP

Does anyone know what sort of bike Hiroshi will be riding? Will he be stuck on a 'stock' satellite bike, or will he get the quasi-factory spec, like Elias did last year? I rate the dude highly, and think that with a 'real' Honda he will surprise a few people.
