VISORDOWN BROUGHT you news last week that Marco Melandri's place in the Marlboro Ducati squad was under threat and that MotoGP veteran Sete Gibernau was set to replace the lacklustre Italian.

The likelihood of this happening is now almost a reality after Melandri's disastrous season with Ducati continued to deteriorate at Assen. While team-mate Stoner has been making hay, Melandri has completely failed to gel with the factory Marlboro Ducati Desmosedici, qualifying and finishing consistently at or near the back.

At Assen, he was banned from talking to the Press by his team; at the same time as rumours gathered strength that he may not even see the year out in the Marlboro colours.

Former team rider Sete Gibernau, twice World Championship runner up to Rossi, is earmarked to replace the Italian. Gibernau lost his Ducati seat to Stoner and didn't race last year, but tested the Ducati at Barcelona after the GP, and is now scheduled for more tests in the coming week. Gibernau himself has put his chances of a late GP return at 55 percent, according to the Spanish Press.

Team chief Livio Suppo acknowledged that it was at least possible. “The situation with Marco is very strange. We must see how he performs at the next two tracks, Sachsenring and Laguna, where he has had good results in the past. We all hope he can finally find the way. But if he is still struggling, it will be very unusual for a top rider.

“We are all so sorry, but sooner or later we will have to serious consider replacing him.”

Gibernau was a prime candidate. “It is no easy to find a replacement at this time of year,” said Suppo. “Sete will test again this week, and we will see if he can be consistent.”

This must be the worst part in his MotoGP career.

This is very sad, for any motogp fan. I thought the picture marijke posted of him parading in the open top car said it all; he looked like an extremely miserable human being. He has the talent, I hope he is somewhere better for him next year.

gibernau will have to prove more than a couple of fast laps to make a full time competative return. He must be doing significant physical training too. Still i hope he does return.

I hate to see this happen to Marco....the guy was running at the front with the leaders only a couple years ago....but I also agree with Tom, Sete needs to prove he's not going to go back to his latter years ways, but at this point, even midfield results are better than poor Marco can turn up on the Duc.
Anyone think Marco could find a home next to Toseland if Colin decides to go green?

Well, judging from the Autosport article Kawasaki are more than interested

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Kawasaki have revealed that Marco Melandri is a surprise contender to replace the injured John Hopkins at the German Grand Prix, if the Italian rider parts way with Ducati.

Melandri has had a torrid time at Ducati Marlboro this year, failing to match the pace of teammate Casey Stoner and struggling even to score points.

His difficulties have left his future at the reigning world champions in doubt, and speculation he could be replaced soon has mounted with news that Sete Gibernau is once again testing for the team at Mugello.

And Michael Bartholemy, Kawasaki's competition manager, has suggested that if Melandri is available then he could land the seat as stand-in for Hopkins in Germany.

"It's a complex situation," Bartholemy told Gazzetta dello Sport. "At Laguna Seca we should have an American rider on track. If Hopkins won't be there, we'll have one of the Kawasaki USA riders.

"At Sachsenring, however, the bike is available. If Ducati tell us that Marco has no links with them, that there are no kinds of strings attached, then if he's interested he might get the ride."

Hopkins suffered leg injuries in a crash during qualifying for last weekend's Dutch Grand Prix and is doubtful for the next two races in Germany and America.

Interesting me thinks...
Also wonder who the US rider will be. RL Hayden as far as I know is still not healed and Hacking is ancient.

that's a cool article....I wish i knew the contractual details, but it seems like Ducati must have provisions for minium performance before they can draft up a substitute rider.....or hike a guy off their bike like they did with Hoff.....this could be a breath of fresh air for Marco if it can actually happen....

Well if RLH isn't fit enough then maybe it will be Chaz. They say an american rider, but in context its possible he means a rider sourced from the American teams, rather than actually American by passport. Who knows

I just remembered that Chaz broke his hand at the end of May. Probably that should be healed by Laguna though. And I think RL was also supposed to be back by Laguna.

I'm assuming they are not referring to passport as I believe RL Hayden has ruled himself out of his wildcard ride at Laguna (can anyone else attest to this?) and Hacking is technically a Brit. Either Chaz or Hacker should get the ride if Marco is still hanging on at Ducati.

Yeah I remember reading that RL voted nay on that appearance.....damned if I can find the article...might have been on superbikeplanet.....not sure

Jamie Hacking is a US Citizen. A few months ago, SuperbikePlanet had an article on Jamie obtaining his citizenship. Besides, the boy has a North/South Carolina drawl that even I cannot fully 'understand the words that are coming out of his mouth'
<

Also, Jamie is injury-free.....and, he's had some rather inspiring results in SBK on the ZX10R, even beating Mladin/Yates/Hodgson for 2nd place in one of the Utah races.

IMHO, Mr. Hacking deserves the ride, should an 'American' rider be picked.

Hell, who else could they look at other than Chaz Davies.......Steve Rapp???

two things: Hacking is now officially a yank. He got his citizenship papers last year. Secondly,
Kawasaki stated not long after RL had his crash that they wouldn't run a 3rd bike at Laguna as they were having enough troubles with two bikes. That pretty much killed RL's wild card ride.

i agree 100%

Boy at the beginning of the year I really thought that with Marco's talent HE would have been the one to beat on the Ducati. It amazes me that he can't get along with the bike. I was really hoping for an Italian on an Italian bike to take the series. That is also why I was really hoping for Rossi to jump the ship at Yamaha and come over to the team.

I remember them stating this. But you are forgetting that they ruled out Hopkins as most unlikely for Laguna. It would be West and someone else, that is what the discussion is about.

Melandri is done. How would he turn it around in the next couple of races unless they made a huge find in the electronics of his bike
<

I asked on the other Melandri thread how many offs he had this season. I asked because this is telling many things. He obviously doesn't have the feel of the bike(I'm taking his word for it), but is he pushing it? Has he given up on pushing the bike? In comparison , Hopkins who probably feels the same way is taking the bike beyond its limit but also suffering the consequences. On another hand you look at Whorehay and see that he is riding beyond his ability, that is why he is making mistakes and paying the consequences. My guess is that he is not pushing hard enough. We know he has the ability. Many have given Stoner credit as totallly trusting in his machinery with a big ball sack. I think that Melandri needs to sack up and push the bike beyond its limit and see where it takes him. If it takes him into the gravel then we will know and I hope he comes out unhurt. If he improves then it was a good gamble.

^+1

maybe melandri needs to just trust the software for once and pin it. if it works, then happy days, problem solved, if it dont, then its back to situation normal. he has got nothing to lose after all.

i was just answering Doc 79 question on what happened to the RL Hayden wild card ride. So in the future maybe you want to read the whole thread before posting silly answers?
I am pretty well aware we are talking about the Hopper Kawa ride for Laguna. I brought up the bloody topic in the first place!

Duh...
