Hey,

Nothing new as this was discussed previously.

Fiery Columbian Juan Montoya will quit his Maclaren seat at the end of this season and will head off to the NASCAR series racing for Chip Ganassi's team, on the back of finding a replacement drive.

The oval should suit his style as will the bumper car style racing.

How does everyone else view this?

Frankly, I think it sucks. I couldn't be more disappointed in JPM.

He went for the payday.

In my opinion it is such a huge step backwards to go from the Pinnacle of car racing to one step up from go-carts. I am well aware that it takes skill to drive a Narcar style car but it is just such a leap backwards. The idea of his move is to help make Nascar an international sport so using Montoya could bring a new following from the latiin american countries.
I guess he sees his career winding down so he is going for the big money.

I wish him luck but I won't be watching..

Actually quite a shame for F1, they've lost one of their only real characters in the paddock.

Nascar.. LOL

+1 to both of you. Shame for JPM as it seems like he couldn't be bothered to drive for a mid pack team and prove he still has it, he had to be in the lime light. And shame for F1, there aren't many characters in the paddock and JPM was one of them. Really too bad that he couldn't have worked out a half decent ride.

Recepie for a NASCAR Driver:

Take a talented, intelligent F1 driver, swipe 70 odd points off his IQ, fill the hole that made in his head with a highly concentrated mix of Budwieser and Leaded Petrolium and put him in a country & western jukebox for for 20 minutes, or until he grows a redneck accent.

Honestly, NASCAR? What was he thinking? He`ll have to change his name, Juan Pablo Monotoya is way too many syllables for his new fan base

richo, that's cruel but funny.

Actually Monty is already out, Pedro de la Rosa will substitute him at McLaren this weekend in the French GP.

So I guess Monty is already on his way to Miami.

He's better off there anyway, he's been one of those hot and cold guys, people who have good races then rubbish the next, at Indy he was always consistent.

In other news:

-Rossi has said he`ll chase the world lawn bowls title next year in his spare time instead of partying
-Pedrosa considers a move to the NBA
-Biaggi joins the preisthood
-And Carl Fogary says somthing nice

I can`t get over it! NASCAR?!? Come on! The world is going crazy!

Actually, it wouldn't be that bad if he had gone to Champ Cars.. But NASCAR?

To quote someone who's name has slipped my mind:

"Driving big cars that look like cereal packets in circles until there is a big pile-up and somebody wins"

By the way.. a question to American members.. do certain sections of the US see NASCAR as the pinnacle of four-wheeled racing?
<

I heard some people on the speed TV forum I think it was.. saying Tony George was better than Alonso
<

I see what you mean, my mum could probably drive round a NACAR circiut at 200 mph, lol.

Champ Car is going down the tubes. Tony George and IRL have destroyed American open wheel racing. IRL is the biggest open wheel series and it's all oval tracks, Champ Car is having a tough time staying afloat and because of it, have had to add more oval tracks.

I'm sure some do see NASCAR as the pinnacle. I would assume it's out of ignorance more than anything but I don't know, I'm not a NASCAR fan. And it's Tony Stewart not Tony George. Tony George is the guy who runs Indianapolis Motor Speedway and is the CEO of the Indy Racing League (IRL). In all fairness, Tony Stewart is a good guy. He's one of those guys who can race anything with four wheels and loves to do it. A friend of mine was at an Outlaw race (the four wheel equivalent to dirt track) in the middle of nowhere and Tony Stewart showed up to race because he had some time off from his NASCAR schedule.

It pains me to say it but it's not as easy as it looks. Four wide, 200mph, no driver aids, lots of contact with walls everywhere. It's a tough gig. If you think JPM is going to wipe up with everyone then you're kidding yourself. He's going to have a tough time adapting, but in the end I believe he will be competitive.

Yep, I know what it's like, I was only joking.

Montoya will always be competitive wherever he goes, it just depends on his consistency like we didn't see in F1.

i couldnt say i know anything about him to be honest mate.

It's a shame because he is actually a very good driver when he wants to be and has the talent to win races. (Silverstone 2005 for example).

This year he's not going to win a race unless Alonso retires and Schumacher does very badly, also having to out-drive others.
