Sounds rather problematic. The original injury which resulted from the Willairot incident was career threatening iirc.

Must have been one heck of a fall. I hope he gets well and comes back fully fit.

As I recall, the original double vision injury took a while for him to recover from and was considered a career risk back then.

I think he has hit his head too many times, I don’t know any other rider in GP history, that has crushed as many times as MM has, 27 times in one year a couple of years ago, there all accumulative. Time for him to look at the rest of his life, and how he wants to spend it.

We haven't got many details, but this sounds more like an injury to a particular nerve rather than a consequence of concussion per se. It is a worry imo that it is the same nerve that was injured before, and hence may not have completely returned to normal after the first injury which may have implications for recovery this time.

If he has had repetitive concussions that is a concern obviously, as it has proven to be in many other sports.

(EDIT Migs was right btw. It was an incident/ crash in the wet in practice at a round subsequent to the one where he crashed into Willairot which caused the previous eye problem and cost him the moto 2 title that year).

The latest announcement from Honda is quite alarming. If there was something good to report they would have done it, but they did not. Instead we got this generic "advancing adequately" and "conservative treatment". Which can mean anything, because they leave it undefined.
Following is pure fiction and I sincerely hope this is not the case, but just to illustrate the above.
What if there is no real treatment available, surgery was done once, further surgery does not help. Nerves do not heal, so the vision won't reconstitute by itself. Doctors do what they can, but nothing really can be done. This is what they call conservative treatment. In these conditions not going blind can be considered adequate advancement.

Several decades since I have done any ophthalmology but his problem is an injury to one of the ocular nerves, not the optic nerve, which leads to double vision rather than blindness. That they aren’t considering surgery I took as something of a positive meaning they think he can recover still. The same problem twice is bad of course, he may not have completely recovered the first time.
(EDIT The corrective surgery itself is not entirely without risk to vision apparently, I just looked it up).

Thanks, michaelm for better medical overview.
However, what exactly is going on there wasn't the point of my post (I just made up something as an example). After reading many happy reactions to Honda PR I simply had to point out there really wasn't any happy news. On the contrary, the lack of good news in this PR is what is worrying me.

I read the actual statement from Puig, hardly effusive as you say.

I looked up his original injury. I had forgotten or didn’t know because I don’t follow moto 2 as avidly that he had to have corrective surgery back then, so that history is hardly encouraging either. Jumkie had a theory back in the day that poor depth perception might be a contributor to his numerous close encounters in his early years in the premier class.

I have great deal of experience dealing with information. In this case I'd kind of reverse-engineer it.
Here we go:
1. In case there was an improvement in Marc' conditions the Press Release would certainly bring out at least some details, plus realistic predictions for near future.
2. OTOH, if there was no good or maybe even bad news then the PR would look exactly as it does look. :(

I wouldn't be surprised to see MM hang his helmet on this one. It's now two serious injuries in a row with prolonged downtime. Unless of course, the going impression is that there's no life without riding in MotoGP.

He can’t ride with diplopia obviously. It would appear he had corrective surgery rather than the nerve recovering last time, and in my absolutely amateur opinion a second lot of such surgery would seem likely to be problematic.

I mostly thought he would eventually heal his humeral fracture even if it took 2 years/much longer than he and Honda would have liked. This current issue is not necessarily resolvable at all.

I think we can all look to the 2nd law of thermodynamics in this, as in many cases. Simply systems simply falling into disorder with time. Nothing good or bad about it. It just is. We shall see what comes.

Good further health to MM and all on this forum!

He's back training on a MX bike.

Can only be a good sign.

Marc Marquez Back On An MX Bike - Recovery Progressing Well
Submitted by David Emmett on Thu, 2022-01-13 19:48

There has been a huge step forward in Marc Marquez' recovery from diplopia, the double vision he suffered as a result of a crash riding enduro. After consulting with the doctor treating his eye condition, the Repsol Honda rider was given the go ahead to ride a motorcycle again. Using the lessons of his previous bout of double vision - after the monster crash in practice in Sepang 2011 - Marquez was cautious in his choice of venue, deciding to ride a motocross bike at his local track in Lleida, Spain. In 2012, he had first ridden a bike at Alcarras, at a track shared with BSB teams. News of his ride quickly leaked, something which was less of a concern at the MX track in Lleida.

In the video issued by with the press release by Honda, Marquez can be seen to be riding with a great deal of freedom, and does not appear to be holding back. The press release describes him as being "more than optimistic" about his return to two wheels, with the next step for the Spaniard to try riding a bike on an asphalt circuit. There was no mention of when that might happen.

A further positive sign is that Marquez will now appear in the Honda press conference to be held on Friday morning, where HRC will announce their plans for the coming season across several championships.

There is no news on whether Marquez will be fit in time for the Sepang test, but at least he is on course to race during the 2022 season. His real level of fitness and ability will only be apparent once he starts riding a MotoGP bike again.

The press release from the Repsol Honda team appears below:

Marc Marquez back on a motorcycle as his recovery advances

Marc Marquez underwent a medical examination with Dr. Sánchez Dalmau last Monday to analyse the situation of his diplopia. The ophthalmologist confirmed a clear improvement in the vision of the eight-time World Champion.

With this progress, the Repsol Honda Team rider received authorization to ride a motorcycle and motocross, the most demanding discipline possible in the world of two wheels, was chosen by Marquez and his team. After a three-month absence, the Spanish rider returned to riding at the Ponts Circuit (Lleida). After several runs his sensations and feelings on the bike were more than optimistic.

The next step for Marquez will be to ride on a paved racetrack.
