Good job, i prefered the basic Wayne Rainey number from testing but this is a decent enough way to go. It's good of him to put tradition and racing etiquette above his PR and merchandising brand.

Don't quite get the "he will be the first to run the #1 plate since Wayne Rainey in 93"

Didn't at least Hayden and Stoner ride with the "1" plate???

Yea, your right, like Curve said, its the first for Yamaha since Rainey. Article didnt specify, or i didnt read it properly

And the answer is, i didnt read it properly

This will be the first time a Yamaha MotoGP rider has worn the No 1 since Wayne Rainey defended his World Championship title in 1993 for the third consecutive time.

So JL is defacing the number 1 plate by making it his initials. Tell me how that isn't a pr or marketing effort. Incidentally, the use of the no. 1 plate is an ego thing. He was world champion last year and it says look at me, I'm number 1 (or at least I was last year). As you can tell, I can give or take the number 1 plate. I don't think it is a tradition, just a privilege that is available to the champion of the prior year.

I actually think NOT taking the number one plate is an ego or even more so an arrogance thing. It says "I am bigger than the sport and I put me before the tradition and the team who put me here".

Not that your opinion is wrong, but i knew, and was waiting for someone to take the very stance you have taken. I was also willing to bet that it would have been a Rossi fan. I personally think you should be required to run the #1 plate, but thats just my opinion.

Well it didn't take long for you to show us your usual moronic self again.....

Must be a lot of ego around then for all should wear their place, most of them must think they are bigger than the sport.......

Casey not sporting the number 4

Dani not sporting the number 2

Jorge not sporting the number 2 last year

Ben sporting the number 11

Dovi has the wrong number on

Colin has the wrong number on

Nicky sporting the number 69

In fact Jorge's looks to be the only one who is wearing the correct number, wow he must be the most humble of the humble............

Funny how you take a discussion about the #1 plate and try and turn it into a silly discussion about 15th place on the grid in order to try to justify your view of the world. I have no problem with the top 3 having to wear their championship number but the whole grid would be just moronic in my opinion.

It is also funny how you quoted Pedrosa's and Stoner's finishing position and ask why they are not wearing it but left out Rossi. Mmmmm a bias....?

If you ask the team and the manufacturer if they would like the number 1 plate on their bike what do you think their answer would be? The rider's personal number is their personal number and does not represent the team or the manufacturer. When the rider can win on their own without a team and without a manufacturer then sure wear what you want. Last time I checked it was a team sport that required the input of 100's of personnel.

I think Jorge wearing the number one is saying "me and my team are the best".

Just my opinion and you are free to think what you like although we rarely know what you think we just know what you think of other peoples opinions.

Sorry - but your opinion is just wrong-headed and misinformed. Any club racer will tell you that that the reason

many riders do not run the number one plate is because of superstition. Riders become very attached to the

number they've displayed on the way up. Moreover, wearing the number one adds extra mental pressure at

all times - it's a burden. Furthermore - it's always in the back of the rider's mind that eventually - the new kid

in town will take his place at which time the wearing of the #1 is really a deeply empty experience. Every time

the rider gets beaten in a race some journo will make reference to the rider's fading glory or something to that

effect. And in the event the championship is decided say three or four races before the end of the season - the

wearing of the #1 plate for the outgoing champion - is particularly odious.

This may be fact but iit is definitely not a humble approach. It's a boast.

Talpa does bring up a good point although he did skew it a little. Why are 2 and 3 (regardless if they are Rossi or anyone else) allowed to use whatever plate they like but number 1 has to use 1 otherwise they are flipping the bird to tradition and on an ego trip.

My honest thought is that the riders can race with whatever number they like. An available privilege of having won the last championship is that the champion can run with number 1. I have no problem with that, Jorge is exercising that privilege. I just don't think it is such an issue to not take the plate.

The origin of Rossi's number is his father's racing number. How many sportsmen are superstitious? Rossi has always raced with his father's number and I would bet he wouldn't feel the same without it. Does anyone think that Rossi is also displaying a bit of family loyalty or respect and recognising family traditions which may very well have contributed to getting him on a bike in the first place? Ultimately, all teams are known as Stoner's team, Lorenzo's team etc, they race under a number/label. Lorenzo's was 99 last year and 1 this year. Rossi has always kept 46. Why is this such a problem?

Racing at the world championship level - is not something that should realistically be expected to engender humility.

Most riders resist the use of the number one plate to avoid the eventual consequences of hubris or the appearance

thereof.

In my opinion it is not wrong-head and misinformed but in your opinion it is - ok. I am not superstitious in the slightest so this would not even enter my thought processes. I find it a bit of a stretch that EVERY rider that has ever won a championship is superstitious. I also don't think having the number 1 on the bike is any added pressure. What about the pressure of - I am being paid 250,000 - 1 million euro (depends who you are) to ride the bike this weekend and the sponsors who pay the bill have x number of celebs and others in the hospitality tent looking at me.... There is pressure every where and if you can't cope then you don't make it in my opinion.

Jorge changed numbers for last season from his previous number to 99, other riders have done it to either forced or not.

Personally if I was ever great enough to be a world champion I would wear the number 1 with pride.

That's because you've never raced. I have.

Um ...... no ....... club racers don't run the number one cos its a pain in the arse!.

Number 1 in the club? well I guess you could run it for days when it is your club only ( rare }
<
Nver saw anyone run a "club no. 1" ever cos its just plain useless ...... nothing to do with superstition
<
........ though are you in the Bellevue motorcycle club? I guess they'd have some serious paranoid superstitions there
<
<
<

And for the usual interclub meets which clubs number one gets to run the number 1? I don't know if things are the same there but here in Aust. its just easier to run your designated MRAA number ........ covers you for all events then without the need to keep swapping numbers and imagine if it wasn't done how interclub meets would be for duplicated numbers
<

Saying that not running the #1 is an ego thing is just the usual indirect stab at Rossi.

I really don't care about this #1 issue, anyway Lorenzo running his own JL initials shaped like a #1 is what? Self-denial?
