Jorge Lorenzo will undergo surgery on a fractured left scaphoid two days before the Repsol Honda MotoGP team launch after suffering the injury while training in Italy.

After the five-time world champion was reported in hospital in Verona, Repsol Honda has officially confirmed Lorenzo has sustained a fracture to his left scaphoid in a training accident.

Following hospital checks in Verona the team confirmed Lorenzo will require surgery once additional medical checks are finished on Monday (January 21). Repsol Honda will release further information on his injury after the operation is completed.

Lorenzo is set to take part in the Repsol Honda team launch in Madrid on Wednesday (January 23), where he will be officially unveiled by the team following his switch from Ducati this winter, along with reigning MotoGP world champion Marquez who is still completing rehabilitation following shoulder surgery in December.

Last October Lorenzo suffered a left wrist fracture which required minor surgery after his high-side crash during practice at the Thailand MotoGP round, ruling him out of four races, but he did return to action for his last Ducati appearance at the Valencia season finale.

It remains unclear whether the new scaphoid injury was caused by a lasting issue from his fracture suffering in October.

Despite pain from his wrist injury, Lorenzo also completed both two-day post-season tests on his Repsol Honda debut at Valencia and Jerez in November.

Lorenzo is due to start MotoGP pre-season testing in Malaysia with Honda on February 6-8. Marquez is already expected not to be 100% fit in time for the Sepang test as he continues his recovery from shoulder surgery.

Yo - Going to Cota this year?

You know what, I have a cold, my horse is injured, it's mid-January (the world's longest ever month and longest time between pay days), it's freezing outside, the roads are slippy, my car is dirty from all the salt on the road, the water taps in the field are frozen so I have to carry buckets of water from the kitchen sink for the ponies...

but...

I am unbelievably pissed off and cross about Lorenzo breaking his arm!!! It's like he did it on purpose just to spoil my week, I'm that pissed off. Does he not realise we're counting the freaking sleeps until MotoGP starts up again, that some of us just cannot contain our excitement about the upcoming year, that I'm willing to sit and watch a day or two's testing on freaking video pass live timing, and off he goes, merrily snapping bones!!! How selfish!! What?! After 18 months of watching him go backwards on a ducati, then an enormous blazing star of a glimmer of hope, then the crushing disappointment of high sides and injuries, he goes and finds a tiny bone and snaps it?! Not only a tiny bone, but a quite hurty one to break and one that needs to be strong to support the weight when racing, but one that is flipping notorious for healing. Jeezo!!! What's he doing to us??!

I am quite irrationally cross about this. I'd write him a stern letter if there were a chance he'd read it. It'd (quite rightly) go in the bin along with all the other "marry me jorge" and "you wear ridiculous shoes" letters.

There. That's a bit better. Did I say I have a cold? I think it may be affecting my mood :p:eek:

My thoughts too. I think the only person more keen to see Jorge on track in Repsol colours would be Libby!

That reminds me: Libby, what has your MotoGP clothing bill been since 2016? You've had to buy Yamaha branded stuff, then Ducati, now Honda!
