According to MCN, Istanbul is off as a potential replacement for Motegi. Considering the politics involved in going back to Suzuka, I'd imagine Motegi will happen.

Istanbul seems great yes.

I would be surprised if they go to Motegi this year with all the contamination, even if it would gain the Japanese.

istanbul is definately one of the better new tracks so i'd welcome it back, i don't like motegi very much anyways....

best thing to do though would be to create larger run offs and install an air fence on the long right following the hairpin at suzuka....suzuka ,spa, nürburgring, how great would it be if motogp returned to one of those circuits

How dare they go to istanbul, it is a ducati track

. Wasn't it bernie who took it away from motogp anyway?

I like istanbul as a track. I thought the issue was track damage at motegi rather than proximity to fukushima though. Unless their economy totally collapses in which case there won't be many bikes to run anyway I imagine they would want to show the flag and raise spirits by fixing motegi and running the race.

Yes, there's a few 'extra bumps' in the circuit now (one of the HRC bosses described them as waves or ripples on the surface), a bit of minor damage to some grandstands and some broken windows to the hotel and museum complex. I'd imagine, given the M9.0 quake on 3/11 was the biggest in Japan's recorded history, and that there's been something like a 100 aftershocks over M5.0 since, a lot of other stuff got rattled around, too. However, reconstruction should be a simple matter in the Land of endless Concrete (provided there are no material shortages because of massive rebuilding in the Tohoku region), so the race should be clear to run on those grounds in October. Tochigi prefecture does border with Fukushima, but there's very little chance of radiation (at a level dangerous to human health) getting that far west unless all six reactors try to blow a hole in the world at once.

All of that aside, it would be fantastic for MotoGP if Istanbul Park could be pried from the grasping clutches of that little poisoned dwarf, Bernie. MotoGP in Turkey should be a permanent fixture on the calender!

It was reported this morning that they have plugged the waterleak, and I think all should be fine for the general public particularly in view of the precautions they have observed. The heroic workers at the plant are the ones who have borne and may further bear in future the cost of this.

Kropotkin just posted that Istanbul is unlikely to take Motegi's place, and that there is very little chance that Suzuka could step in as F1 goes there the following weekend. From what he's saying, it sounds like there's a real chance the Japanese GP will be scrapped for this season.

If radiation from fukushima is a problem at motegi that much later in the year then the world will have problems. David emmett says that giving any priority to rebuilding motegi may be seen as frivolous in the overall context, which as usual would seem likely to be true. Rising sun may have a more local perspective.

Just when you think the worst of the after shocks are over

Tsunami warning lifted thankfully!
