In the media and when listening to commentary over the passed few years Rossi has commonly been describe as "one of the greatest GP racers"

Now that he has equaled Agostini's 68 top class wins can we called him "the greatest" instead of "one of the greatest" once he gets win number 69?

Or does the fact that Agostini has 8 top class titles to Rossi's 5(to be 6) leave him as the greatest?
If you include the lower classes as well Agostini has 15 world championship to Rossi's current 7.

What counts more, number of race wins or number of world championships?

I think its too early to call Rossi the greatest. Agostini still has that title IMO.

He is 3 world titles short of equalling the GOAT, but he's heading for a clear second place.

I think it is hard to compare rossi and agostini particularly for those like me who haven't seen both given the large gap of time between them and the difficulty of assessing the level of competition each faced but I think it is getting harder to say agostini is greater, although his longevity in view of the danger of racing in his time continues to be noteable.

there used to be more races in ago day thats how he got so many championships. it's not easy to compare both eras as theres to many variables.

The one aspect which has been cosistent throughout the history of motogp is that it is the pinnacle of the sport, and the world championship is the big prize, given out once a year. For this reason i think it is the single most significant and comparible statistics.

well 60 years ago the ford model T was the best selling car and today its the mondeo but i dont think you can really compar the 2.

ago use to race in a couple of championships in the same season something which is unheard of in the modern eara, fast freddie was the last to do that and win both i believe and it burned him out. yes gp was the pinical back then as motogp is now but how does that make the 2 ereas comparable ?

I would love to say Rossi is the greatest but really they are equal, Rossi will have more wins by the time he packs it in and mabey another championship, theres too many factors to take into consideration, they are without a doubt both the best of their generation

I like how Rossi has a tough 2006 where he wasn't destined to win it, a shock with Stoner and some bike woes in 2007, to regaining the title in 2008. That shows some character.

When Rossi wins this year, will he do it with less than nine wins because I believe he has never won a championship with less than nine wins (I might be wrong with this stat)?

i think he won with 9 wins in 03 and 04 and something like 11 wins for the other 3 seasons he won.

Rossi with the rest of 08 to go and 2 more years at Yam he will be the greatest

Rossi Wins
2 wins 2000 second in championship
11 wins 2001
11 wins 2002
9 wins 2003
9 wins 2004
11 wins 2005
5 wins 2006 second in championship by 5 points
4 wins 2007 third in championship
2008 ?

Well figure that Rossi is 29 and Capirossi is 35. So if Valentino really wants to he could pound out a record that will be almost impossible to beat.

I'd like to think that if he wins a title in either 09 or 2010 he'll stick around and go for the 8th to tie Agos record.

Difficult to compare the greatest riders from way different eras. But yes, Rossi is without a doubt, the greatest of modern era as stated.

I wish he sticks for another couple of years.

I think Rossi was bordering on been the Goat by doing what he did on the Yam in 2004.Since then hes just backed it up (even in 2006) coming back from 50something points down was just insane both him and Nicky (Loris aswell actually)deserved it that year.

Well even if Rossi gets 69 or more wins, i think we should still give credit to Agostini, as being one of the greatest riders in the world. But i think that yes, Rossi would be the greatest rider in the world

Yeah me to I just wish he was on the Ducati so I could and the rest of Italy could bask in the greatness that is Italian! Well he has 2 more years with Yam so there is always that outside hope that he will ride for his home.
