Ok, serious question.

Does anyone think Marquez/Pedrosa could win a race(s) on the LCR Honda as it stands today? Could Lorenzo win on a Tech3 Yamaha? I think that they could, and therefore there are more than 4 race winning machines in MotoGP. Sadly, there are not more than four race winning riders.

Edit to add: I re-read what you wrote and got lost.

1. If you are counting the Suzuki and Kawasaki as win capable in 2007, then all the RCVs and M1s should definately be counted in 2013.

2. In 2010, why are there only five bikes listed? Hayden and Stoner were on the same Ducati, but you only count one as capable of winning?

I could go on but your entire post seems to assume that all the riders are as good as each other and only the bikes are not on the same level.

I think MM and Pedrosa could win on an LCR Honda, but only for sure if they took their computer techs with them and they were allowed to use the factory settings. It would help that they weren't racing against themselves on the factory bike, particularly in MM's case.

I think Yamaha is a different case, the salient feature being that a bloke called Valentino Rossi has won only one race on the factory bike, in a circumstance where 2 of the usual suspects were injured, significantly including Jorge. I don't discount the bike having been developed too far in Jorge's direction, but I also don't discount the possibility that Jorge is doing something extraordinary. I hence think it is possible both that Jorge but no-one else could win on any sort of Yamaha, and that no-one else on any sort of Yamaha could beat a fit Jorge riding a factory Yamaha.

The point about the computer techs and associated team is one that I have made before. The actual difference between a Factory bike and a Satellite bike is minimal if at all, but the personnel are important. But even in a spec series like Moto2 you can't eliminate that difference (as we witnessed with Marquez last year). I'd rate Rossi the 4th best rider in the field, and he can't match the front guys, which is why it wouldn't matter if everyone had factory bikes, they would still all be a step behind the best riders.

I agree, Lorenzo is doing something extraordinary on the Yamaha to win, just as Stoner before him on the Ducati. That's the whole point. It's not the bikes holding riders back, it's their inability to do something extraordinary. In MotoGP, we're trying to find out who the best riders in the world are - not find the guy who could probably now and again if he had the best bike at his disposal.

I am not so sure about Rossi being the 4th best rider in the world. It would be interesting to see how he went on a factory Honda.

I'm not so sure either and was being generous but I can't really think of another. Who else would you rate up in the very top group?

Edit: Wait, maybe you meant better than 4th?

I was saying that he might do better on a factory Honda than on a factory Yamaha. I think there is a fair chance he could beat Pedrosa at least.

Sadly, even though I am officially Marqies No.1 fan, I think I didn't even think he'd actually win the WC.

God the other riders are slouches.
