Hey,

My dad and I are heading to Silverstone next year to watch the race and as an early birthday present for him I wanted to surprise him by taking him to meet some of the riders. I was just wondering how you do this? I know that he would love it and it would mean a lot to me. Can anyone help me? My other question is, is Day of Champions worth going too?

Thank You

Scarlet

Hi

I would say that the best way to meet riders is on the Day of Champions, usually held on the Thursday of the GP weekend. There are different prices for tickets for DoC, which give you different levels of access, the more expensive giving you full access but they are the ones that sell quickest. If their are paddock passes for Silverstone they are either rare or are sold at the auction for four figure sums. The auction can bring some great insight and laughs from people of all levels involved in MotoGP.

I won't name names, but a certain person who moans a lot is not that approachable, just the opposite, and wonders why British fans turned against him at previous GPs held at Donington!

Good Luck

Thank you, I really do appreciate it. I've signed up to the DoC newsletter and twitter so hopefully I'll here about the tickets straight away. Are you talking about Casey Stoner?

No problems, glad I was of help. DoC will be on 7th June next year, if memory serves me right tickets go on sale about 2-3months before the event.

Yes, it is Stoner. One of his first outings to DoC as a MotoGP rider, the rumour mill was rife about his antics on the day. I think it was the first time, when I spoke to a couple at Donington who asked him for his autograph and he promptly turned his back and totally ignored them, he also refused to go on stage for his turn at the auction. The following year was much the same, when he crashed during qualifying at Foggy Esses, he was disappointed when British fans started pointing and laughing at him. The race itself, he claimed he was punched several times on the warm-down lap and announced in the British Motorcycle News paper that British fans "wanted him dead." This prompted Rossi to intervene and told him he had to make it up to the fans, going as far to say he should take the Union Flag onto the podium. I think what really stuck in peoples throats was that his family moved to England to kick start his racing career. You should have heard Neil Hodgson's opinion of a 14 year old Stoner when he announced himself to Neil

What he^ said and VIP village tix. BIG ... bucks.

Now everyone knows it depends on whom you talk to Jumkie

what did he have to say about casey?this bit?"Which young riders riding in the UK would you tip for success?

Unfortunately the young rider that I would tip, is Australian and he's called Casey Stoner. He's also the nicest kid you'll ever meet. He came and knocked on my motor home door and introduced himself to me. I had a lot of respect for him for doing that you know a fourteen year old kid. Remember the name, he'll be World Champion, I'm confident."

i wouldn't be approachable either if tens of thousands of yellow painted faces didn't appreciate me the slightest bit after beating rossi twice

i can't imagine Lorenzo being an ....... towards fans and he gets booed frequently on the island

I heard Hodgson talk about Stoner when he was a guest commentator at Laguna a couple of years ago.

Said exactly the same thing you just said.

I still have the qualifying session from Laguna 2008 where he was talking about him on my hard drive.

So Skaface where exactly are you getting your rumours from?

Can you back up anything at all in your post?

The way I remember it Neil then went on to say that Casey just stood there after, I think the point Neil was trying to get across was that he thought Casey was a bit arrogant.

The rumours about Casey at DoC came from Messrs Toby Moody and Julian Ryder in 2006, two commentators for British Eurosport who bring some reliable info, as backed up by the the couple I spoke with and the BBC commentators. The Eurosport guys also do a lot of work on the stage at the auction for DoC. Much the same happened in 2007 and it was all reported in the Motorcycle News, the paper rather than the website, including that statement about fans.

Donington was taken off GPs because the Wheatcroft family couldn't get a buyer for the track, the track was also dug up in anticipation of the new revised circuit plans. Because money wasn't available, the only changes that took place were to Foggy Esses and Melbourne Hairpin and resurfacing the dug up patches. And it wasn't just British fans that invaded the track, I personally saw several people with Spanish and Italian flags. Donington's fencing is just as sturdy as Silverstone, it's just a British tradition in certain sports that fans invade after the event, they are constantly warned in English to not invade or face arrest, but no other languages are used.

You still haven't backed up one word of what you said. And I watch Eurosport too.

I can tomorrow upload the session to youtube of Neil Hodgson talking about Stoner on Eurosport.

What can you bring to your claims?

Stoner was booed in the UK a few years back and didn't appreciate it - I believe it was the following year that he refused to take the stage at the DoC and I don't blame him.

I think he's a moody guy and you have to catch him when the time is right. That's true with me too, but fewer take notice.

Well why are you whinging and whining at Stoner
<
? Are you a Brit Bopper as I assumed? Maybe if you don't like Stoner you should watch WWF or something where you don't have to actually enjoy the sport just sook and whinge at the leading participant
<

Dorna would make a squidillion if they created a new series called WWMGPF

Hmm Ya, I can see why people were upset. I only found out recently that he started his career here but maybe he will get better at interacting with fans in the future. Have to be honest, I have never been that impressed by his' attitude and he always seems to have something to whine about. However I still think that he is a great and very talented rider and lets be honest no one is perfect and you can't please everyone. I was shocked when he punched Randy in the arm, although I do understand why he was annoyed, and having a go at Nicky Hayden. I just don't think that it is necessary to act like that but then again the handbags have been out a lot in the paddock. I just wish they would sort things out on the track. To be honest all the paddock drama has just made me respect Colin Edwards, Cal Crutchlow, Nicky Hayden and Ben Spies more because they just seem to get on with it and stay out of the drama. I will however say that that is my personal opinion and I am a relative new comer to the sport but I love it. At the end of the day, if I manage to pull this mission off (fingers crossed) and my dad and I only meet a few riders I think we will still be happy and they do say you should never meet your heroes

I wouldn't wait for that, sometimes you just have to accept folk for how they are. I think Stoner will always be the reclusive type. Just look where he lives when in Aust,
<

Indeed Stoner exhibits a propensity to be pulling away from fans he does not like ( eg. Brit. fans ) even more.

But hey you can either accept that or get on a forum and complain about it to try and make him become more like you want him, and less like he wants to be
