Hayden baffled by dismal race

By Michele Lostia Sunday, June 1st 2008, 16:41 GMT

Nicky Hayden was baffled as to the reasons for his race slump in this afternoon's Italian MotoGP at Mugello.

The Repsol Honda rider, who made a good start from sixth on the grid to run as high as fourth in the first lap, suffered a steady drop down the order during the race to end up in a lowly 13th position, 50 seconds behind winner Valentino Rossi and 45 behind teammate Dani Pedrosa.

"This morning we made a nice step, we made a suspension adjustment and the bike felt a lot better, so we had a pretty good pace," explained the American.

"We were certainly unlucky in the race. I got an awesome start, felt pretty good, but it was clear from the beginning that we had a problem. Guys started coming past and there was nothing I could do, there was no way to defend. So I just tried to get to the finish and get a couple of points."

Hayden is now waiting for the team to analyse the RC212V's telemetry.

"They're checking the data now to see exactly what happened," he concluded. "Like I said, we were quite unlucky, I knew we didn't have Rossi's pace this morning, but we had enough pace to be in there, to be quite competitive."

No word yet on what the telementry showed.....................................................

This is either good or bad news.

Bad news because Nicky is baffled....which is exactly what Marco is at the moment, and we know where that ends up.

Good news because there might have been a problem, annulling my bad news point.

I'm thinking the same, if things are quiet because it turned out it was all in Nickies head then thats bad times, but it could also be a case of HRC finding a problem and not wanting to talk about it. Either way lets just hope it doesn't happen again.

Sounds to me like Nicky's baffled. I'd expect a rider in this class to be able to point to an inability to get heat in the rear, a lack of edge grip, or something specific. If the report is an accurate transcription of what Nicky had to say then I'd reckon he's more in a Melandri-type position than anything else. To say that the bike felt "pretty good" but that he didn't understand why other riders were able to pass him so easily seems worrying to say the least.

Let's hope that they find something, but even if they do I'd have expected Nicky to be able to have some kind of feel as to what the issue may have been rather than say he felt he was "unlucky".

If in doubt blame luck and/or God. A surprsing amount of proffesional races are religious, and even more are superstitious!!

The problem is in his head, and by that I mean he can't figure out how to adapt his riding style to suit the bike.

The pneumatic valved engine will give him 1 or 2 good races this year....and these will be the first couple of races he gets to use the new engine. He won't make podium but will be top 6. This will be due only to his head thinking the pnuematic engine is better than the spring valve engine. The very series of races will see him back to his current form..

That's a good point considering how much racing is actually in your head.

If Nicky THINKS it's better, then he may well improve like you say purely because he's built it up in his head.

Where is mylexicon, surely there is some sort of conspiracy going on behind the scenes causing Nicky and Melandri to sink to such low performance levels this year.

In all honesty, Nicky, you're a great guy, but what the hell is going on with you? From 4th to behind Guintoli? If its such a bad bike, then why has Peders been so consistent?

Actually, I was thinking what is going on behind the scenes.

Firstly, Nicky having no idea what's wrong with the bike means he can't talk about it. He'll say "I didn't get it done" when the bike is broken and he's not allowed to spew, if he says "I don't know", he's running something that is an unknown quantity. He is the world's worst liar
<
and he's never been at a loss for words when something is wrong.

I wanna say he ran the pneumatic valve engine and early in the race he was able to keep pace b/c cold tires meant everyone was getting limited power to the ground. As the race progressed and people were hammering the gas out of the turns Nicky was getting passed left and right.

He doesn't even seem pissed about the result. He realized he's not going to win a the championship this year, so he's gone right back to the donkey work to try and save his job.

Okada within 5 seconds of Nicky is the only thing baffling me. Okada has tons more time on the bike, but Nicky has ridden the pneumatic engine at race pace on at least one occasion before. It seems strange.

Hayden seems to use up his tyres at a faster rate to the other riders.

We saw him pull a move on Rossi on the first lap at Mugello, pretty pointless as he knows he didn't have the same pace.

I disagree.

Clearly there was a technical issue. I believe he was lapping around 1:57 near the end of that race. Good on him for not pitting, but staying out there(even if it means being criticized by couch experts).

Who are these people and what form of "racing" are they trying to watch?

At the end of the day, he's a world champion. end of analysis.

I was talking to a friend of Nicky's yesterday that I use to race CMRA with and he said that Nicky was protecting someone. They know what the problem was but Nicky does not want to point the finger at anyone through the media so he kept his mouth shut.
