Blood Run Cold: Haga Update
walked away from crash
by dean adams
Sunday, June 28, 2009
The words "damaged vertebra" in a press release after a rider falls can make even the most hardened race fan's blood run cold as memories of Rainey, Haskovec and others paralyzed in race crashes come to mind.

Nori Haga suffered injury to his back today in his race two crash at Donington Park. Haga was struck by his motorcycle at least twice in the spill, resulting in a cracked vertebra, a broken wrist and a possible minor break in his collarbone area.

The vertebra injury is not, according to WSBK sources, one which will result in paralysis--in fact, Haga walked away from the spill.

The doctors who are treating the Ducati WSBK rider have made an initial estimate that he will be out of racing for one to three months while he heals from this incident.

Haga's Donington crash happened in the very same corner which saw Troy Bayliss fall and lose a finger in 2007.

Update: Clinica Mobile's 9:00 PM update indicates that an initial CAT scan of Haga's back did not reveal any "recent vertebral fractures".

Go read the Donington SBK thread.

What the ...., with a title like "Haga Out" are you trying to scare the hell out of me. He is set to return to Brno, which is in about 3 weeks time, lots of time to recoup.

Haga undergoes successful operation
Noriyuki Haga will travel home to Italy today having undergone a successful operation to his fractured ulna, where doctors inserted a plate and screws to set the bone.

Haga was operated on at Derby Hospital, just a day after his vicious accident during the second World Superbike Championship race at Donington Park, with doctors labelling the surgery as having been successful with no unforeseen complications.

In addition, however, closer inspection has revealed that the shoulder pain Haga was suffering was due to multiple fractures in the left scapula. However, it will not need surgical intervention and won't prolong his overall recovery process.

Set to be discharged today [Tuesday], Ducati Xerox rider Haga will not be present at the upcoming mid-season tests at Imola, but he is expected to compete in the next round at Brno, Czech Republic.
